Book excerpt: Saint John of Kronstadt (1829-1908) served 53 years of his ministry at St Andrew's Cathedral, Kronstadt, devoting himself to the salvation of the city slum-dwellers. His charitable works became famous as did his healing prayers, rumoured to work miracles. Although these selections are intended primarily for priests, the laity may also benefit from the words of St John of Kronstadt.

Book Spiritual Theology of the Priesthood

Download or read book Spiritual Theology of the Priesthood written by Dermot A. Power and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Urs von Balthasar's writings have pastoral implications that even now are barely recognised and hardly developed. Here a pastorally experienced theologian, who knew von Balthasar personally, unfolds this pastoral dimension for the first time. Integrating Christology and Ecclesiology with the profound spirituality that for von Balthasar is inseparable from authentic theology, Fr Power demonstrates the paradoxical grandeur and weakness of the Catholic priesthood. He highlights the roles of the Catholic priest as servant, bridegroom, shepherd, victim, teacher, prophet, celebrant and minister of reconciliation. At a time when many priests feel their identity called into question, this book offers new hope for the renewal of the priesthood in the Catholic Church.

Book Understanding the Religious Priesthood

Download or read book Understanding the Religious Priesthood written by Christian, OSB Raab and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2020-10-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most contemporary theologies of Holy Orders consider priesthood mainly in its diocesan context and most contemporary theologies of religious life do not consider how ordained ministry functions when it is internal rather than external to religious life. Understanding the Religious Priesthood provides a history and theology of religious priesthood that contributes to our understanding of this vocation’s identity and mission. It uncovers what religious priesthood shares with diocesan priesthood and non-ordained religious life and what makes it different from both those other vocations. Christian Raab begins by tracing the history of religious priesthood from its origins in the early Church to the eve of the Second Vatican Council. He demonstrates that religious priests often faced questions about how to reconcile their two callings, but that they also provided answers in their theologies and spiritualities of priesthood and religious life. Meanwhile, they made key contributions to the Church’s life and mission. Raab then investigates the teachings of the Second Vatican Council on priesthood and religious life. Observing that the Council presented priesthood according to a diocesan typology and presented religious life without sacerdotal associations, he argues that the lack of imagery of religious priesthood contributed to a post-conciliar vocational identity crisis among religious priests. He then seeks to remedy this lacuna by appealing to the biblical images for religious priesthood Hans Urs von Balthasar offered in his theology of vocations. Raab argues that Balthasar’s imagery is a promising way forward for understanding the identity and mission of religious priesthood. In a final part, Raab provides a substantial theological articulation of religious priesthood which illuminates its liturgical signification, ecclesial mediation and mission, and ministerial identity. Here he draws not only from Balthasar but also from Pope John Paul II, Yves Congar, Jean-Marie Tillard, Brian Daley, and Guy Mansini to construct his profile.

Book Priesthood in Religious Life

Download or read book Priesthood in Religious Life written by Stephen Bevans and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2018-09-27 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English on priesthood in religious life to be published in twenty years. Its fourteen contributors search for new ways forward in the understanding of the distinct identity and ministry of religious men—committed to community, the prophetic lifestyle of vows or promises, and the particular charisms of their congregations—who have also answered the call to priesthood. Essays in this collection include reflections from a bishop, from the perspective of a lay theologian, from an expert in the social sciences, and on Pope Francis’s teachings on priesthood. Included as well are essays that are rooted in particular cultural traditions, in spirituality, and in canon law.

Book excerpt: In recent years many books have been published in the area of Christology (who is Jesus in himself?) and soteriology (what did he do as Saviour?). A number of notable, ecumenical documents on Christian ministry have also appeared. But in all this literature there is surprisingly little reflection on the priesthood of Christ, from which derives all ministry, whether the priesthood of all the faithful or ministerial priesthood. This present work aims to fill that gap by examining, in the light of the Scriptures and the Christian tradition, what it means to call Christ our priest. Beginning with a study of the biblical material, the book then moves to the witness to Christ's priesthood coming from the fathers of the Church, Thomas Aquinas, Luther and Calvin, the Council of Trent, the seventeenth-century 'French School', John Henry Newman, Tom Torrance and the Second Vatican Council. The two concluding chapters describe and define in twelve theses the key characteristics of Christ's priesthood and what sharing in that priesthood, through baptism and ordination, involves.

Book On Christian Priesthood

Download or read book On Christian Priesthood written by Robin Ward and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ideas which have defined and informed Christian priesthood in the past are now called into question more than at any time since the Reformation. Is there such a thing as a Christian cult? Is Christian worship in any other way sacrificial? How can ordained Christians be seen as part of a ministerial priesthood distinct from other believers? What does it mean to teach with authority within and on behalf of the Church? When Michael Ramsey wrote The Christian Priest Today he could assume that the priest would be seen as a man of the Eucharist, a confessor, an intercessor and an exponent of the Church's teaching. In the contemporary Church none of these things can be taken for granted in the same say. This book seeks to re-pristinate the doctrine of ministerial priesthood by setting it within the context of fundamental moral theology - to recall readers from all Christian traditions to the fundamental soundness of the concept of ministerial priesthood and its importance in contemporary ecumenical duologue, liturgical reform and pastoral planning.
