Download or read book Rating Law and Valuation written by Frances A.S. Plimmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the introduction of the uniform business rate in 1990, local property taxation changed dramatically, whilst retaining many of its historical and familiar characteristics. Rating Law and Valuation details the existing, non-domestic rating system from the principles of rate liability and the definition of hereditament, the rateable value, to the procedure for compiling and altering the rating lists. The book also discusses how the methods of valuation are used by rating valuers to produce rateable values for the more common property types. The text concludes with a similar treatment of Council Tax which is levied on domestic property. Rating Law and Valuation is written primarily for those studying property valuation as part of their course, and is an indispensible reference book for those taking professional courses of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Incorporated Society of Valuers and Auctioneers (ISVA), and Institute of Revenue and Rating Valuation (IRRV). It is also a useful resource for practitioners who are required to deal with rating law and valuation but who do not do so on a regular basis.

Download or read book Spatial Analysis And GIS written by S Fotheringham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographic information systems represent an exciting and rapidly expanding technology via which spatial data may be captured, stored, retrieved, displayed, manipulated and analysed. Applications of this technology include detailed inventories of land use parcels. Spatial patterns of disease, geodemographics, environmental management and macroscale inventories of global resources. The impetus for this book is the relative lack of research into the integration of spatial analysis and GIS, and the potential benefits in developing such an integration. From a GIS perspective, there is an increasing demand for systems that do something other than display and organize data. From a spatial analytical perspective, there are advantages to linking statistical methods and mathematical models to the database and display capabilities of a GIS. Although the GIS may not be absolutely necessary for spatial analysis, it can facilitate such an analysis and moreover provide insights that might otherwise have been missed. The contributions to the book tell us where we are and where we ought to be going. It suggests that the integration of spatial analysis and GIS will stimulate interest in quantitative spatial science, particularly exploratory and visual types of analysis and represents a unique statement of the state-of-the-art issues in integration and interface.

Download or read book The impact of devolution on social policy written by Birrell, Derek and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2009-09-09 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With new devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, this book makes a comprehensive assessment of the impact of devolution on social policy. It provides a study of developments in the major areas of social policy and a full comparison between Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. To what extent is it valid to speak of agendas for government driven by social policy? With new governments in each country, has a fresh dynamic been given to the emergence of distinct social policies? The impact of devolution on social policy uses a framework of analysis based on the nature and scope of social policies, ranging from major innovations and policy distinctiveness, to differences in implementation, policy convergence and areas of overlap with UK policies. This framework facilitates an integrated analysis and comparison of social policy developments and outcomes between the four UK nations. An assessment is also made of the ideas and values which have driven the direction of social policy under devolution. With devolution becoming increasingly important in the study of social policy, the book will be of key interest to academics and students in social policy, public policy and politics, and will also be a valuable resource for practitioners involved in policy making.

Download or read book Tax Fairness and Folk Justice written by Steven M. Sheffrin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why have Americans severely limited the estate and gift tax - ostensibly targeted at only the very wealthy - but greatly expanded the subsidies to low-wage workers through the Earned Income Tax Credit, now the single largest poverty program in the country? Why do people hate the property tax so much, yet seemingly revolt against it only during periods of economic change? Why are some groups of taxpayers more obedient to the tax authorities than others, even when they face the same enforcement regime? These puzzling questions all revolve around perceptions of tax fairness. Is the public simply inconsistent? A sympathetic and unified explanation for these attitudes is based on understanding the everyday psychology of fairness and how it comes to be applied in taxation. This book demonstrates how a serious consideration of 'folk justice' can deepen our understanding of how tax systems actually function and how they can perhaps be reformed.

Each chapter has been written by an acknowledged expert in the field with extensive practical experience, and where appropriate is supported by comprehensive case studies and worked examples. What this book emphatically will not do, is turn anyone into an expert in the specialist and even arcane worlds of the plant and machinery valuer or the valuation of milk quotas. What it will do, however, is give some indication of the problems and pitfalls associated with these fields.
