Book Broken Benefits

Download or read book Broken Benefits written by Royston, Sam and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain is going through the most radical upheaval of the benefits system since its foundations were laid at the end of the 1940s. In Broken Benefits, Sam Royston argues that social security isn’t working, and without a change in direction, it will be even less fair in the future. Drawing on original research and high-profile debates, this much-needed book provides an introductory guide to social security, correcting misunderstandings and exposing poorly understood problems. It reveals how some workers pay to take on additional hours; that those who pay national insurance contributions may get nothing in return; that some families can be paid to split apart; and that many people on the lowest incomes are seeing their retirement age rise the fastest. Broken Benefits includes real-life stories, models of household budgets, projections of benefit spending, and a free online calculator showing the impact of welfare changes on personal finances. The book presents practical ideas of how benefits should be reformed, to create a fairer, simpler and more coherent system for the future.

Book Department for Communities and Local Government

Download or read book Department for Communities and Local Government written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Committee of Public Accounts and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-06-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central government grant funding to local authorities is being cut by over a quarter in real terms (£7.6 billion) between 2011 and 2015. The Department for Communities and Local Government is also introducing fundamental changes to the local government finance system with reforms to business rates and council tax benefits, so the pressures on the sector are set to increase. The Department does not properly understand the overall impact on local services that will result from the funding reductions, nor has it modelled how funding changes may adversely affect other areas of the public sector. It must improve its ability to foresee what effects the full package of funding reductions and reforms will have on local authority areas, particularly for those authorities which face higher deprivation levels. Local authorities' statutory duties have stayed broadly the same, and in some areas, such as adult social care, the demand for services is increasing. There is a risk that the worst-affected councils will be unable to meet their statutory obligations, threatening their viability. The Department must clarify its plans to respond if councils become unviable. More information is needed to understand councils' spending and performance. The Department did not make clear how it will monitor councils' ability to cope with funding changes, or the extent to which they are able to do this by increasing efficiency rather than reducing services. Neither has it demonstrated that the information published is sufficient to provide assurance on the value for money with which councils spend their resources.

Book Taxation and Social Policy

Download or read book Taxation and Social Policy written by Andy Lymer and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2023-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about tax and social policy and how they interact with each other. The impact of taxation as an instrument of social policy is central in influencing redistribution and behaviour. This broad-based edited collection fills a significant gap in both literatures, bringing together disparate debates in this emerging area of analysis. It guides readers through the key interactions of tax and social policies and the central debates and challenges posed by their effect on each other. It examines how analyses might be combined and policy options developed for more effective delivery and impact in both areas.

Book Barlow s Cohabitants and the Law

Download or read book Barlow s Cohabitants and the Law written by David Josiah-Lake and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-05-18 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the number of couples choosing to live together (and not to marry) is on the rise, it is essential that access to what their legal rights and obligations are is readily available. The fourth edition of Barlow's Cohabitants and the Law provides a wealth of both new and updated information on important issues affecting cohabiting couples such as cohabitation agreements, disputes in relation to children, the family home and tax and social security. Part I focuses on the ongoing relationship and Part II with relationship breakdown. There have been significant legislative, procedural and case law developments since the publication of the third edition in all of the key areas of family, child, land and trust law that impact on cohabiting couples in much the same way as married couples, eg: - New child maintenance regulations (CMS) - Family Procedure Rules 2010 - Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 2008 - Adoption and Children Act 2002 - Stack v Dowden [2007] UKHL 17, [2007] 2 ALL ER 929 - Jones v Kernott [2011] UKSC 53, [2012] 1 AC 776; and - Bhurra v Bhurra [2014] EWHC 727, [2014] All ER (D) 213 (Mar) Mention is also be made of EU jurisdiction distinctions/differences. The practical stance of the work is enhanced by a precedents and checklist section, and the provision of a number of 'at a glance' comparative tables setting out the rights of cohabitants, married couples and civil partners in relation to property and housing, financial provision following breakdown of the relationship, child maintenance, death, pensions and more.

Book The Scottish Economy

Download or read book The Scottish Economy written by Kenneth Gibb and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Scottish economy is at the heart of contemporary constitutional and public policy debates. This substantial new edited collection, the first comprehensive and authoritative analysis for more than 60 years, is a timely update on the classic volume of the same name edited by Sir Alec Cairncross in 1954. It is data rich, and offers links to updatable data and leading indicators of the Scottish economy including measures of public finances, distributional evidence and growth. Readers will find a series of easy to follow chapters covering the Scottish economy from every angle – oil and gas, health, education, finance, rural Scotland, inequality, climate change, gender and work, housing, infrastructure and cities. Each sector-based chapter explores the main issues, draws out key empirical facts and considers policy challenges that lie ahead. This book includes: an historical account of the development of the Scottish economy; the trajectory of economic policy in Scotland; reviews of the current fiscal position and the wider economic landscape; and also an intriguing insight into the emerging distinctive approach to Scottish public policy. This book brings together evidence and high quality research by experts on the Scottish economy in a politically neutral, accessible and non-technical way. The volume will assist readers in navigating their way through the many political debates about constitutional and economic futures that are underway in modern Scotland and the UK. A website also exists to accompany The Scottish Economy - www.scottisheconomy.scot. In today's inter-connected world, it makes sense to have a book on the Scottish economy supplemented by online access to important data, information and evidence as a means of keeping material current.

  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book The best start in life written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Work and Pensions Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-03-10 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government has set itself the challenging target of halving the number of children living in poverty by 2010-11 and eradicating child poverty by 2020. With 2010 fast approaching, Ministers are still committed to the targets, and the Committee wanted to ascertain whether DWP has the right measures in place to meet its objectives. Significant progress has been made, but the target remains challenging: there are still 2.8 million children living in poverty and the most recent data shows a slight increase in this number. The Committee is convinced of the damaging effect of poverty on a child's self-esteem and expectations, and also its effects in contributing to social exclusion. Children growing up in poverty are also more likely to have poorer health and poorer educational outcomes. There are groups of children who have a much higher risk of growing up in poverty, for example if they or a parent are disabled, and there are higher poverty rates amongst Pakistani, Bangladeshi and black children. Getting parents into sustainable work should be the focus of the strategy to lift them and their children out of poverty, but there are concerns that the Jobseekers' Allowance regime is not sufficiently flexible to reflect the complexity of lone parents' lives. To eradicate child poverty by 2020, the Government needs a long-term strategy on benefit income for those who are unable to work. If benefits are uprated in line with inflation, the gap between the incomes of those in work and those on benefits will only get wider, as benefits will not keep pace with earnings. As poverty is measured as a percentage of median earnings, the implications for the 2020 target, in particular, are serious.
