Book A Guide to Graduate Programs in Counseling

Download or read book A Guide to Graduate Programs in Counseling written by Tyler M. Kimbel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written for undergraduate students and other prospective counselors, A Guide to Graduate Programs in Counseling is the first of its kind to create a comprehensive, reliable means of learning about the counseling profession, entry level preparation (i.e., master's degrees in counseling specializations), and what to consider when searching for, applying to, and ultimately selecting a graduate program in counseling that is the "perfect fit." The Guide offers vital information relative to accreditation and its importance in the counseling profession with regards to obtaining licensure, certification, and even employment opportunities after graduating. As a CACREP publication, this book is the official source of information about accredited counseling programs and includes information about what counseling programs seek in candidates, what programs can offer students in terms of professional development and job placement, and guidance on personal and practical considerations for entering the counseling profession. Authored by counseling experts and featuring insights from voices in the field, A Guide to Graduate Programs in Counseling is a must-have resource for anyone interested in becoming a professional counselor. This text is an official publication of the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the counseling profession's recognized accreditation body. The book fulfills a need for individuals considering a career in the counseling profession. Counselors comprise 37% of all helping professions, the largest of all professions that include social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and marriage and family therapists (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2014). The counseling profession is projected to grow 29% between 2012-2022, faster than the average for all occupations according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Book Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs

Download or read book Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs written by Jamie Marie Forte and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explored whether school counselors who attended a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program varied from those who did not attend a CACREP accredited program in their sense of feeling prepared to perform tasks within the four fundamental categories: counseling, consultation, curriculum, and coordination. This research also sought to determine if CACREP and non-CACREP professionals differed in their sense of performance match between what they actually do in their counseling position and what they believed was appropriate for their position. There were a total of 838 participants between the ages of 23 and 71 who were members of the American School Counseling Association, were currently practicing, and had earned either a master's or specialist degree. Participants completed an adaptation of the School Counseling Rating Scale (SCARS), originally developed by Scarborough (2005), to rate their sense of how well their education prepared them for tasks within the four fundamental categories, how often they actually engage in these tasks, and how appropriate they felt those tasks were in their profession. The analyses yielded some significant findings. One of these findings indicated accreditation did have an effect on perceived preparedness for one of the fundamental categories. Also, several significant differences existed in preparedness among all participants without regard to accreditation.

Book The Conceptualization of Self care and Integration of Self care Education in the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs Curriculum

Download or read book The Conceptualization of Self care and Integration of Self care Education in the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs Curriculum written by Nicole L. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to explore how CACREP accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs conceptualize self-care and integrate self-care education into counseling curriculum. Counselor educators in CACREP accredited Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs served as representatives to their programs and were invited to share how their counseling programs conceptualize self-care and integrate self-care education into the curriculum. In addition, the counselor educators identified a faculty member teaching a course in which the CACREP standard is met. This faculty member completed a questionnaire regarding their experiences teaching the course. The questions guiding the research were: 1. How do Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs accredited by CACREP conceptualize self-care? 2. How is self-care education integrated into counseling curriculum? Participants included three counselor educators teaching in a Clinical Mental Health Counseling program accredited under the 2009 CACREP standards and two faculty members teaching a course in which the CACREP standard was met. In response to the first question of how self-care is conceptualized in the program, two common themes emerged between the three individual cases: ambiguity of self-care conceptualization and an emphasis on prevention and early intervention. In response to question two which explored how the programs are integrating self-care education into the curriculum, two common themes emerged between the three cases: specific course integration and infusion throughout the program, and faculty involvement and demonstration of importance. The results and interpretations are explained; contributions to the current literature, implications, and limitations are discussed; and recommendations for future research are provided.

Book Evaluating Student Learning Outcomes in Counselor Education

Download or read book Evaluating Student Learning Outcomes in Counselor Education written by Casey A. Barrio Minton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely text describes the role of program evaluation in counselor education and provides step-by-step guidance for faculty seeking to develop comprehensive Student Learning Outcome (SLO) evaluation plans to meet accountability expectations. It serves as a blueprint for demystifying the SLO process and making the switch from an input-based measure of productivity that focuses on what counseling programs do, to an outcome-based approach that concentrates on the quality of learning through evidence-based assessment of students’ knowledge and skills. The first and second parts of the book lay the foundation for the SLO process and provide practical guidance for identifying and developing direct and indirect measures of student learning. Part III offers strategies for creating measures; collecting, managing, and reporting student data; and using data to ensure competence. In Part IV, counselor educators across the country offer hands-on application through a wide variety of SLO activities and rubrics linked to each of the curricular and specialty areas of the 2016 CACREP Standards. *Requests for digital versions from the ACA can be found on wiley.com. *To request print copies, please visit the ACA website here. *Reproduction requests for material from books published by ACA should be directed to [email protected]

Book How Cacrep Accredited Institutions Meet the Cacrep Practicum Standards

Download or read book How Cacrep Accredited Institutions Meet the Cacrep Practicum Standards written by Joel Muro and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine how institutions accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) meet the practicum requirements set forth in CACREP s 2001 standards. Practicum is a vital part of the matriculation process of counselors in training. This clinical based course allows students to practice the skills they have learned in previous, more didactic based courses. Trainees can stretch skills, all under the watch of a counselor supervisor with greater experience. Although CACREP instructs all accredited counseling programs to have such a course in place, the standards are not specific. Schools are often interpreting the standards in a multitude of ways, presumably to successfully meet the standards while still serving the student as well as the clientele who seek out mental health assistance (Pitts, 1992a).

This book was released on 2018 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Online education is a growing part of academia. The number of online school-counseling programs is also increasing and beginning to include face-to-face and online programs. Little research describes online education and even less discusses online school-counseling programs. The purpose of this study was to examine and interpret participants' experiences of being trained and graduating from a CACREP online school-counseling master's program, as well as how their training prepared them for their current role as a school counselor. A qualitative inquiry was conducted to understand online school-counseling programs and reported how six professional school counselors perceived their online program with a Council for Accreditation for Counseling and Related Educational Programs accreditation prepared them for their role in schools. Participants revealed information about their reasons for choosing an online program, interactions with peers and faculty, and how the program impacted their role as a current professional school counselor.

Book Testing the Engagement Theory of Program Quality in CACREP accredited Counselor Education Programs

Download or read book Testing the Engagement Theory of Program Quality in CACREP accredited Counselor Education Programs written by Shannon Prater Warden and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Program quality is a high priority in American higher education (Haworth & Conrad, 1997; Schuh & Upcraft, 2000). The drive by both public and private colleges and universities to enhance and evaluate program quality is partially fueled by an ever-increasing public demand for institutional accountability (Duderstadt & Womack, 2003; Suskie, 2006). As a result of this demand, two movements are occurring within American higher education -- the movement toward measuring student learning outcomes (SLOs) through outcome-based evaluation (Bogue & Aper, 2000; Schalock, 2001; Welsh & Dey, 2002) and the movement toward greater inclusion of stakeholders in program evaluation (Banta, 2002; Maki, 2004; Miller, 2007). Prior to 2009, the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) required accredited counselor education programs to include stakeholders (e.g., faculty, current students, alumni, employers) in program evaluation (CACREP, 2001). With its revised 2009 standards, CACREP began requiring accredited programs to place greater emphasis on SLOs (Cashwell, 2008; Urofsky, 2008). These practices demonstrate CACREP's commitment to quality assurance in the field of counselor education and to counseling students' growth and development (Conrad, Duren, & Haworth, 1998). The Engagement Theory of Program Quality (Haworth & Conrad, 1997) highlights many positive SLOs that result from stakeholder involvement in program evaluation within master's-level graduate programs. As such, Engagement Theory is a potentially useful quality assessment resource for CACREP-accredited programs in their efforts at enhancing and sustaining program quality. The primary purpose of this study was to examine Engagement Theory, which had not been previously tested in counselor education, within the context of CACREP-accredited programs. A total of 481 master's-level counseling students and 63 faculty members representing 68 American colleges and universities participated in the study. Findings revealed that study participants perceived Engagement Theory's 17 attributes of program quality as important indicators of program quality, thus giving validity to Engagement Theory as a potential program evaluation resource with CACREP-accredited counselor education programs. Participants' perceptions of the presence of the attributes varied, indicating that further examination of program quality within CACREP-accredited counselor education programs may be warranted."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
