Book The Commercial Cotton Crop of 1903 4 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Commercial Cotton Crop of 1903 4 Classic Reprint written by James L. Watkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Cotton Crop of 1903-4 The exports. Though not so large as in either of the previous three years, were over S.100,000,000 more valuable than ever before. The visible supply of American cotton at the close-of the season was the smallest for many years; The season (1903 - 4) demonstrated the fact that the world's consumption of cotton had overtaken the supply, the close of the season showing an actual deficit in supply amounting to approximately bales. It was also demonstrated that to meet the world's requirements a crop of no less than 11 000 000 bales per annu-m must be produced in the United States. Another notable event of the year, brought about bv the short American crop and the ever increasing demand for cotton, was the incorporation in England of the British Cot-ton Growing Association, with a capital stock of 000, for the purpose of extending the growth and cultivation of cotton in the British colonies, dependen cies, and protectorates. The prospectus of the association makes the following statement: It is an admitted fact that the world's consumption of cotton has overtaken the supply, and the danger of the situation is intensified by the fact that American requirements have enormously increased in recent years, namely, from bales in 1891 to bales in 1902, and will no doubt go on increasing. 'it is estimated that the normal increase in the world's consumption of cotton is bales per annum. It is therefore evident that unless new cotton fields are Opened up in other parts of the world, most of the mills in this country will have permanently to work short time, and may be closed entirely. Even should the present American crop (1904 - 5) prove to be a favorable one, the efforts of the association must in no wav be relaxed, for future years are most doubtful, and with the increase in con sumption it is almost certain that within a comparatively short period there will be another shortage. In 1901 and 1902 many cotton mills in this country were unable to run full time, owing to shortage of cotton. In 1903 most of the Lancashire mills ran short time for a period of four months, and it has been estimated that the spinners, manufacturers, and operatives suffered in that year a direct loss of apart from'the losses consequently entailed upon merchants and others indirectly interested in the welfare Of the cotton trade. In the present year (1904) the majority of the mills have been compelled to run short time for eight months, and it is impossible to estimate the loss to the whole Empire of the serious diminution in the productive and earning power of the most important manufacturing industry of the world. Book Cotton in Brazil Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cotton in Brazil Classic Reprint written by Horace G. Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton in Brazil Cotton has a long and significant history in Brazil. For many years cotton was important only in the Northeast, but during the decade of the 1930's, cotton attained an important place in South Brazil, and since that time production in the southern zone has substantially exceeded production in the Northeast. Brazil has vast land resources that could be devoted to the production of cotton or other crops. In the Northeast, cotton yields are far lower than in the south, but northern cotton has fewer competitors for a significant place in the farming system and therefore tends to have strong holding power as the major cash crop on many farms. Book The Peasant Cotton Revolution in West Africa

Download or read book The Peasant Cotton Revolution in West Africa written by Thomas J. Bassett and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature of Africa is dominated by accounts of crisis and gloom. But Thomas Bassett, a distinguished American geographer well known in the field of development, tells an unusual story of the growth of the cotton economy of West Africa. One of the few long-running success stories in African development, change was brought about by tens of thousands of small-scale peasant farmers. While the introduction of new strains of cotton in French West Africa was in part a result of agronomic research by French scientists, supported by an unusually efficient marketing structure, this is not a case of triumphant top-down 'planification'. Employing the case of Côte d'Ivoire, Professor Bassett shows agricultural intensification to result from the cumulative effect of decades of incremental changes in farming techniques and social organization. A significant contribution to the literature, the book demonstrates the need to consider the local and temporal dimensions of agricultural innovations. It brings into question many key assumptions that have influenced development policies during the twentieth century.

Download or read book Empire of Cotton written by Sven Beckert and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic story of the rise and fall of the empire of cotton, its centrality to the world economy, and its making and remaking of global capitalism. Cotton is so ubiquitous as to be almost invisible, yet understanding its history is key to understanding the origins of modern capitalism. Sven Beckert’s rich, fascinating book tells the story of how, in a remarkably brief period, European entrepreneurs and powerful statesmen recast the world’s most significant manufacturing industry, combining imperial expansion and slave labor with new machines and wage workers to change the world. Here is the story of how, beginning well before the advent of machine production in the 1780s, these men captured ancient trades and skills in Asia, and combined them with the expropriation of lands in the Americas and the enslavement of African workers to crucially reshape the disparate realms of cotton that had existed for millennia, and how industrial capitalism gave birth to an empire, and how this force transformed the world. The empire of cotton was, from the beginning, a fulcrum of constant global struggle between slaves and planters, merchants and statesmen, workers and factory owners. Beckert makes clear how these forces ushered in the world of modern capitalism, including the vast wealth and disturbing inequalities that are with us today. The result is a book as unsettling as it is enlightening: a book that brilliantly weaves together the story of cotton with how the present global world came to exist.

Book Grain Marketing Facilities in the Coastal Plains Area of North Carolina Classic Reprint

Download or read book Grain Marketing Facilities in the Coastal Plains Area of North Carolina Classic Reprint written by Perry Steen Richey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-14 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grain Marketing Facilities in the Coastal Plains Area of North Carolina The 46 counties comprising mainly the coastal plains area of North Carolina produced bushels of corn, bushels of soybeans, and bushels of wheat in 1951. It is estimated that bushels of corn, bushels of soybeans, and bushels of wheat moved from farms into commercial channels from the 1951 production and that bushels of com was fed to livestock on farms. In all counties the yields per acre and production of corn have increased greatly in recent years. Increases in production of corn have not been accompanied by corresponding increases in grain - consuming live stock. The production of corn and soybeans as cash crops is of major importance on farms in tidewater counties where tobacco and cotton are not produced. The greatest amounts of corn moved from the thousands of farms in the central coastal plains section where tobacco, cotton, or both are principal sources of income. The production and movement from farms of small grains is of minor importance in all sections of the area in comparison with those of corn md soybeans. In tidewater counties corn and soybeans move rapidly from farms after harvest time. In the tobacco-cotton section com either is sold as a minor cash crop soon after harvest, or it may be stored on farms until the determination is made that it is not needed for livestock feed. Corn is stored on farms under conditions which promote its rapid infestation and damage by insects and damage by moisture in wet harvest years. It is estimated that in 1951 about bushels of corn, which was eventually sold from farms, remained on farms for 1 month or longer, in addition to the more than bushels fed to livestock on farms. This created a need for space to store bushels. Adequate storage space was available to care properly for about bushels of corn on farms, leaving about bushels stored in facilities where it was subject to serious damage.
