Book Cotton Production in India Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cotton Production in India Classic Reprint written by Henry W. Spielman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Production in India Once Indian cotton had entered the World market in sizable quanti ties it maintained its popularity. Before the United States Civil War, England and China were the largest buyer of India cotton but at the end of that war Europe was the principal consumer. After the turn of the 'twentieth century, Japan began buying more and more Indian cotton and in the early 1930's was the largest buyer. In the early years of World War II, India was faced with a burden some surplus of cotton, which placed a strain on the Government as well as on the cotton trade. Steps were taken to relieve the surplus by restricting cotton acreage and encouraging food-grain production. Since India was short of food, this move helped the cotton industry and improved the food situation. Unfortunately with India's increasing population and a higher standard of living for many working people, food production continues below India's requirements. There appears to be a need to continue restrictions on cotton acreage indefinitely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Cotton an Account of Its Culture in the Bombay Presidency

Download or read book Cotton an Account of Its Culture in the Bombay Presidency written by Walter R. Cassels and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton, an Account of Its Culture in the Bombay Presidency: Prepared From Government Records and Other Authentic Sources, in Accordance With a Resolution of the Government of India It is strictly a chronicle of facts relative to the culture of Cotton in the Bombay Presidency, collected from the records of Govern ment, and from other authentic sources. The defective state of these records, and the unsystematic manner in which the proceedings of many of the Experimental Establish ments have been reported, has rendered research laborious, and its results imperfect. Success might have made details unnecessary, but the want of them has hitherto rendered failure comparatively uninstructive. The lessons of experience have certainly been paid for, but few have been placed in a position to profit by them. Much statistical and general information connected with Cotton has been reluctantly omitted from this volume, the limited libraries of Bombay not affording the necessary data. Book Hindi Cotton in Egypt Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hindi Cotton in Egypt Classic Reprint written by O F Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hindi Cotton in Egypt Experiments show that both Of these sources of diversity can be eliminated by a. More careful system of field selection, applied early in the season before the inferior plants have begun to flower, and hence before they have cross-fertilized the neighboring plants. The value of the Arizona Egyptian cotton and the prospects of cultivating this crop on a commercial scale in the United States depend largely on the degree of uniformity that can be attained in the fiber, in com parison with that of the Egyptian product. Hence, the necessity for an inspection of the cotton fields of Egypt in order to determine the extent of diversity in the crop as raised in that country. The high cost of labor in the Southwestern States forbids any direct imitation of Egyptian methods, either in raising the crop or in preparing it for market. Other solutions Of the problems of production have to be sought. The requirement of uniformity has been met in Egypt by a system of careful grading of the cotton after picking that would be very difficult to establish in the United States, and too expensive to leave any assurance of profit for the farmer even if it were established. The Egyptian cotton trade is organized on an entirely different basis from the American. Instead of merely ginning and baling the farmer's cotton as he brings it from the fields, it is the regular practice of the Egyptian ginning establishments to buy the seed cotton from the farmer and prepare it for the market by sorting, grading, and blending. Instead of depending entirely on samples, as with Ameri can cotton, Egyptian cotton is sold largely by the marks or brands that are placed on the bales by the ginning establishments. Cotton of the same mark is supposed to represent a definite uniform quality. This is much more practicable in Egypt than it would be in most parts of the United States because of the much greater uniformity of climate and soil in Egypt. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cotton and Commerce of India, Considered in Relation to the Interests of Great Britain: With Remarks on Railway Communication in the Bombay Presidency The nature of the subjects discussed, and the scantiness of available exact information of some important kinds, have ran dered it necessary to be content, in some cases, with arguments less precise and demonstrative than may be desired. I trust, however, that probability enough has been attained to serve as a present guide to safe practical measures, and that at least a ser vice has been done by putting into form for further investiga tion by the aid of better ascertained facts, some arguments which may throw light on the condition of India, and the means of its amelioration. It may be hoped that the mission of inquiry which has just been entrusted by the Chamber of Commerce of Manchester to Mr. Mackay, will contribute to those further investigations which must be required no less by our growing concern with India than by our present interests. Book Studies in Gujarat Cottons Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Gujarat Cottons Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Maganlal L. Patel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Gujarat Cottons, Vol. 1 This cotton is cultivated as a mixture crop, one row being sown between ten or twelve rows of some cereal. In the first season it yields little or no cotton: in the hot weather it is cut down to one foot of the ground, in the second monsoon it grows luxuriantly and produces a full crop in the following hot season. The cotton in subsequent years is of coarser quality than that of the second, and the plant is usually rooted out at the end of the third or fourth season, but it is occasionally allowed to grow for six or seven years. When growing wild in hedgerows the cotton turns yellow, and very short in staple the fuzz at the same time becomes long. Rozi is markedly different from the annual cottons and does not seem to hybridize with them. It strongly resembles Gossypium a'rboreum, the chief difference being a yellow flower and the absence of the marked reddish tinge possessed by this species. As has already been stated, the cultivation of this cotton is declining. It produces a lint of fairly long staple, which is, however, very coarse, and is almost entirely used locally in Northern Gujarat. Its value is much decreased owing to the unripe condition in which it is usually picked. It has probably little or no future, and while it will continue to be grown, yet its cultivation hardly affects the larger interests of cotton growing in the province. It occupies nearly 7 000 acres in the Kaira District. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
