Una alternativa para mejorar el desarrollo de estos sistemas, es la cria de reemplazos en la misma unidad de produccion, con el objetivo de mejorar sus caracteristicas genotipicas y fenotipicas que influyen directamente en su potencial productivo y adaptacion a las condiciones locales. En este tenor, se ha considerado la evaluacion del diametro toracico para predecir el peso del animal en funcion de la edad y, como repercuten las practicas de alimentacion en su desarrollo. Finalmente, proponer alternativas de cria para disminuir los costos de produccion, ya que un gran numero de productores, compran hembras para reemplazo a costos elevados.

La lecheria en pequena escala o lecheria campesina, que se desarrolla en el altiplano central, contribuye de forma importante a la oferta nacional de leche. Los hatos no son mayores a 30 vacas, y la disponibilidad de tierra no mayor a 5 ha. El uso de la tierra se divide entre cultivo de maiz y praderas de ballicos bajo pastoreo. Durante el invierno, las estrategias de alimentacion se basan en el uso de concentrados comerciales (de 3 a 6 kg/vaca/dia), y la suplementacion de ensilado de maiz (de 3 a 9 kg de MS/vaca/dia), mas accesos restringidos a pastoreo. Durante la epoca de lluvias, la alimentacion consiste en suplementacion con concentrados (de 3 a 6 kg/vaca/dia), y acceso a pastoreo hasta por 9 h/dia. En este documento se presentan los resultados de la respuesta productiva y economica a la suplementacion de vacas lecheras, con varios niveles de ensilado de maiz en la epoca invernal, y de concentrados en la epoca de lluvias, como una alternativa para reducir costos por concepto de alimentacion en este tipo de sistemas."

Book excerpt: Updates for many countries have made it possible to estimate hunger in the world with greater accuracy this year. In particular, newly accessible data enabled the revision of the entire series of undernourishment estimates for China back to 2000, resulting in a substantial downward shift of the series of the number of undernourished in the world. Nevertheless, the revision confirms the trend reported in past editions: the number of people affected by hunger globally has been slowly on the rise since 2014. The report also shows that the burden of malnutrition in all its forms continues to be a challenge. There has been some progress for child stunting, low birthweight and exclusive breastfeeding, but at a pace that is still too slow. Childhood overweight is not improving and adult obesity is on the rise in all regions. The report complements the usual assessment of food security and nutrition with projections of what the world may look like in 2030, if trends of the last decade continue. Projections show that the world is not on track to achieve Zero Hunger by 2030 and, despite some progress, most indicators are also not on track to meet global nutrition targets. The food security and nutritional status of the most vulnerable population groups is likely to deteriorate further due to the health and socio economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. The report puts a spotlight on diet quality as a critical link between food security and nutrition. Meeting SDG 2 targets will only be possible if people have enough food to eat and if what they are eating is nutritious and affordable. The report also introduces new analysis of the cost and affordability of healthy diets around the world, by region and in different development contexts. It presents valuations of the health and climate-change costs associated with current food consumption patterns, as well as the potential cost savings if food consumption patterns were to shift towards healthy diets that include sustainability considerations. The report then concludes with a discussion of the policies and strategies to transform food systems to ensure affordable healthy diets, as part of the required efforts to end both hunger and all forms of malnutrition.

Black, White, and Green brings new energy to this topic by exploring dimensions of race and class as they relate to farmers markets and the green economy. With a focus on two Bay Area markets—one in the primarily white neighborhood of North Berkeley, and the other in largely black West Oakland—Alison Hope Alkon investigates the possibilities for social and environmental change embodied by farmers markets and the green economy. Drawing on ethnographic and historical sources, Alkon describes the meanings that farmers market managers, vendors, and consumers attribute to the buying and selling of local organic food, and the ways that those meanings are raced and classed. The causal agents of the diseases are described giving synonyms, cultural characteristics, isolation methods and present knowledge on race variation, an aspect on which there has been quite an advance in knowledge since Volume I was published. New techniques of diagnosis are also given. Advances in research on the diseases over the last 25 years are well covered and supported by an extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter.The book has been edited by people having first hand experience in the field and in research on these diseases. Authors have been selected from among the most knowledgeable all over the sugar cane world, especially with due regard to the importance of the different diseases in their countries.The book should prove of immense value to those concerned with practical aspects of plant disease control in the field: pathologists, agronomists and crop specialists, including consultants, to those concerned with quarantine of the crop, for university lectures and students, and research scientists.In a pre-publication review D.J. Very few lakes and rivers have existed continuously for more than a million years, and the life of the majority is to be measured in thousands or less. Earth movements, erosion and long-term climatic changes in the past have caused many of them to appear and disappear. No wonder then that most freshwater organism are especially adapted to great changes and many even to temporary extinction of their environment. Recent studies of residual sediments from existing and extinct lakes in tropical Africa have told us much about their age and the past history of their faunas and floras, from which we may deduce something about the climate and the conditions in the water in the past. The forces that have formed and moulded the African Great Lakes have been catastrophic in their violence and effects. They are not yet finished, but the present rate of change is, in human terms, too slow for direct observation of the ecological effects. The large man-made lakes are providing very good opportunities for studying the chemi cal and biological consequences of the initial filling but, once filled, they are artificially protected against major fluctuations.
