Book Gringo Gulch

  • Author : Megan Rivers-Moore
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-08-04
  • ISBN : 022637341X
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Gringo Gulch written by Megan Rivers-Moore and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gringo Gulch is a spot in San Jose, Costa Rica, home of female sex workers who have male clients from abroad (from North America in particular). Rivers-Moore s work leads the way in a burgeoning scholarly initiative to explore global sex tourism based on long-term qualitative research. Her work on the gulch is populated not only by sex workers and their clients, but also by state agents and NGO workers. All of them, she argues, use sex tourism as a strategy for getting ahead. Rivers-Moore addresses central questions: why has Costa Rica (a middle-income country thought to be an exceptional success in Latin America) emerged as a major site of sex tourism? How do sex tourists and sex workers derive meaning from their experiences, in what way do they profit from their encounters with each other? And how has the neoliberal entrenchment of state services and provisions across Latin America affected the role of the nation-state in relation to sexuality? This book shifts the conventional analysis away from questions of whether third world women s participation in sexual exchanges with first world men in tourism economies are exploitative; it asks, instead, new questions about how something is gained by all parties involved (presenting opportunities for economic and social mobility in terms of class positioning for all). Audiences for the book will include anthropologists, sociologists, historians, geographers, as well as scholars in Latin American and Caribbean studies. "

Download or read book Pura Vida Mae written by Buffie Biddle and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pura (pronounced poor-ah) Vida (pronounced veed-ah) literally translates to Pure Life. Mae (pronounced my) is Costa Rican slang for friend or pal (like our “dude”). Pura Vida Mae is the story of a serene and mellow young iguana by the name of Daniel who enjoys living his life and relaxing in the sunshine. As he goes about his day, he learns that a great many other animals in the jungle do not share his fondness for a laid-back life. Some of these animals question him, and others simply go about their business. Daniel does have some very nice friends, though, and they share his love for an uncomplicated life of peace. His friends do not all look like he does, but they do have a great deal in common. Daniel can be himself with his friends, and they love each other for that. The message of this story is to love yourself and each other for who you are. I intend for this story to teach that gentle lesson. I began to write Pura Vida Mae after my first visit to Costa Rica, where I fell in love with everything about this amazing country. This place made a huge impression on me as a nature and wildlife enthusiast and conservationist as well as an artist; the love of life in all of its forms so apparent here. “Pura Vida” is the national greeting of the Costa Rican people. It means everything from “hello” and “nice day” to “good-bye” and “safe trip."

Book Costa Rica Then costa Rica Now

Download or read book Costa Rica Then costa Rica Now written by Tereza Ramos and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM PURA VIDA TO THE ROACH MOTEL IN 11 SHORT YEARS. CR CAPTIVE IS QUITE LITERALLY A CAPTIVE IN COSTA RICA. SKIP THE PROPOGANDA & TOURIST TRAPS. YOU COULD BE RISKING YOUR LIFE (OR THOSE OF YOUR FAMILY) BY COMING TO COSTA RICA WITHOUT FIRST READING THIS BOOK. This is not a joke! I need help.My 92 year old mother is suffering from a broken hip in Florida & desperately needs her only son. Costa Rican police kidnapped me, took my life savings, & now prevent me from leaving Costa Rica to take care of my mother. It was truly Paradise, where I built my pyramid in the jungle---& from where Costa Rica Then/Costa Rica Now is written. The #1 cause of premature death was traffic accidents. #2 was drowning. Along with the scenic mountains, the beautiful women lined the roads & always greeted you with a smile. Mom loved it also, & planned to move here when she no longer felt comfortable living alone. Walking the beach in the moonlight was a joy beyond words. And then came Costa Rica Now.At first, the women kept their same clothes, & stomachs flapped over the undersized shorts as their blouses couldn't stretch to their navels. Finally they gave up & bought fat clothes. Now they (literally) throw you in jail for looking at them. Murder is so common that everyone knows the price of a "hit" ($38). Mom was robbed & left with nothing but the clothes on her back. I was robbed first by the police, then by the Mob, & finally by a judge. NO CHARGES/NO CRIME/NO COURT/ RIGHTS/NP PHONE CALL/NO TOILET/NO WATER/NO FOOD! Just: "Give us $9000 in cash, or you will never see daylight again." At the beginning of Cost Rica Now, crooks were the reason no one walked the beach at night. In the daytime, you cannot take your eyes off of your stuff---or even lock it in your car. But now police ARE the thieves, & act with impunity. In other Central American countries, highway robbers are the main concern. In Costa Rica, the highway robbers wear uniforms & are paid by the government. Somalian pirates kidnap until a ransom is paid. Costa Rican police now do exactly that. The US Embassy has finally issued travel warnings for the crime. Every country has criminals. Costa Rica puts them on the payroll.
