Book Cost Optimization of Stirred Ball Mill Grinding

Download or read book Cost Optimization of Stirred Ball Mill Grinding written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On going research at the University of Alabama has shown that stirred ball mill grinding is the highest cost unit operation in the beneficiation of Eastern Oil Shales. Minimization of that cost is critical if oils derived by beneficiation and hydroretorting of Eastern shales are to become an economic alternative to conventional crude oils. Cost optimization of stirred ball milling is a substantially different problem than optimizing a conventional (tumbling) mill operation. For conventional mills minimum cost is virtually synonymous with minimum energy consumption. Because the technology is mature and well understood, the operator can predictably optimize within a very narrow range of operating conditions. In contrast, stirred ball milling offers the operator several more ''degrees of freedom'' in selecting operating conditions. An example is the selection of rotor speed. In general, lower speeds result in lower energy consumption per ton of material ground but at the cost of reduced mill capacity per unit volume. Because stirred ball mills have a high capital cost per unit volume the trade off between energy consumption and capacity becomes critical. This paper presents a generalized total cost mode for stirred ball milling and examines data generated in the grinding of oil shales in terms of the model. The paper also discuss the role of the cost model in guiding future research in grinding circuit optimization.

Book A Computer Simulator for Ball Mill Grinding

Download or read book A Computer Simulator for Ball Mill Grinding written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ball mill grinding is an important operation in the processing of most minerals, in that it may be used to produce particles of the required size and shape, to liberate minerals from each other for concentration purposes, and to increase the powder surface area. Grinding of minerals is probably the most energy consuming task and optimization of this operation has vital importance in processing plant operations to achieve the lowest operating costs. Predicting the complete product size distribution, mill specifications and power draw are important parameters of this optimization. In this study, a computer simulation program is developed in MATLAB environment to simulate grinding operations using the kinetic model in which comminution is considered as a process continuous in time. This type of model is commonly and successfully used for tumbling grinding mills having strongly varying residence time as a function of feed rate. The program developed, GRINDSIM, is capable of simulating a ball mill for a specified set of model parameters, estimating grinding kinetic parameters from experimental batch grinding data and calculating continuous open and closed-circuit grinding behavior with mill power input. The user interacts with the program through graphical user interfaces (GUI’s).

Book A Comminution Study for Reduction of Grinding Energy Cost for Granulated Copper Slag

Download or read book A Comminution Study for Reduction of Grinding Energy Cost for Granulated Copper Slag written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the potential for reducing the total energy required to grind Kidd Creek Mines granulated copper slag to approximately 3000 Blaine fineness for use in cemented backfill. The effect of high pressure roll crushing prior to ball milling was considered as the primary alternative to ball mill grinding alone. Closed versus open circuit ball milling was also considered. Samples of granulated copper slag were sent to KHD in Cologne, Germany, where they underwent roll crushing at 60 and 80 bar pressures. The original `as received' and roll crushed products were also tested for their ball milling grindability characteristics in their Zeisel grindability tests. Bond ball mill work index tests were also conducted at McGill University, Montreal.
