Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cosimo De' Medici Florence, too, was a commercial state; the possession of land was merely an accident in the possession of power, - a part, but the least important part, of wealth; we find all the commercial problems of a later date already alive - the uneasy relations between capital and labour, the employment of foreign politics as a means to commercial extension, the manipulation of a state debt, with shares whose value fluctuated as the prosperity of the Government. Here, too, are found in almost every individual that very modern craving to obtain a share, however small, in the direction of the national policy; here, as in modern politics, the difficulty of establishing an executive powerful enough and sufficiently many-sided to embrace and com with the complicated and manifold conditions of modern administration; here efforts like those of a modern foreign minister to make his policy consistent and effective, and yet agreeable to the public whim Government must be maintained either by brute force or by clearly-expressed public Opinion, never by the inert acquiescence of the governed in any rule that had an appearance of hereditary right. Book Cosimo De Medici and the Florentine Renaissance

Download or read book Cosimo De Medici and the Florentine Renaissance written by Dale V. Kent and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cosimo de'Medici (1389-1464), the fabulously wealthy banker who became the leading citizen of Florence in the fifteenth century, spent lavishly as the city's most important patron of art and literature. This book is the first comprehensive examination of the whole body of works of art and architecture commissioned by Cosimo and his sons. By looking closely at this spectacular group of commissions, we gain an entirely new picture of their patron, and of the patron's point of view. Recurrent themes in the commissions - from Fra Angelico's San Marco altarpiece to the Medici palace - indicate the main interests to which Cosimo's patronage gave visual expression. Dale Kent offers new insights and perspectives on the individual objects comprising the Medici oeuvre by setting them within the context of civic and popular culture in early Renaissance Florence, and of Cosimo's life as the leader of the Medici lineage and the dominant force in the governing elite." "From the wealth of available documentation illuminating Cosimo de'Medici's life, the author considers how his own experience influenced his patronage; how the culture of Renaissance Florence provided a common idiom for the patron, his artists, and his audience; what he preferred and intended as a patron; and how focussing on his patronage of art alters the image of him that is based on his roles as banker and politician. Cosimo was as much a product as a shaper of Florentine society, Kent concludes. She identifies civic patriotism and devotion as the main themes of his oeuvre and argues that religious imperatives may well have been more important than political ones in shaping the art for which he was responsible and its reception."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book The Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Robert Proctor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Printing of Greek in the Fifteenth Century I cannot let this book go forth without an apology to my readers, in that I have ventured to attempt a work dealing to a very large extent with technical details, without that knowledge of printing which can only be acquired by practical experience. In this respect I owe much to the kindness of Mr Horace Hart, the Controller of the Oxford University Press, who made many obscure points clear to me by ocular demonstration. The greatest care has been taken to make the illustrations facsimiles as exact as possible; but it will often be found that minute indications to which I have drawn attention in the text are not visible in the reproductions. I must ask those who wish to study the matter closely to turn to the originals in these instances, and to remember that in the first printed books Greek type generally printed with an exceptional lack of sharpness, and that since even the best process blocks magnify and harden any defect due to imperfection of inking or presswork, while they almost always thicken the lines to some extent, the appearance of the type is sometimes materially altered. Mr E. Gordon Duff gave me valuable help with the unique books in the John Rylands Library, especially in connexion with the photograph from the Batrachomuomachia shown in plate VII. To him, and to the other friends by whose knowledge and advice I have profited, my best thanks are due. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Lorenzo De' Medici, Called the Magnificent From this full blaze of talents, the author has turned towards a period, when its first faint gleams afford a subject, if not m01e interesting, at least more suited to his powers; when, after a night of unexpected darkness, Florence again saw the sun break forth with a lustre more permanent, though perhaps not so bright. The days of Dante, of Boc caccio, and of Petrarca, were indeed past; but under the auspices of the House of Medici, and particularly through the ardour and example of Lorenzo, the empire of science. And true taste was again restored. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lorenzo De' Medici, Vol. 2 of 2: The Magnificent Bonagiunta Of Lucca and the notary of Lentino must not be overlooked; but though earnest and weighty writers, they were so destitute of refined taste, that they must be con teiit to find a place in this collection of honoured names. Another contemporary of Guittone was Pier delle Vigne, of whom Dante said that he had both the keys of Frederick's heart.
