Book For Ireland and Freedom Roscommon and the fight for Independence 1917 1921

Download or read book For Ireland and Freedom Roscommon and the fight for Independence 1917 1921 written by Micheal O'Callaghan and published by Mercier Press Ltd. This book was released on 2012-08-03 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This classic text, first published in 1964, opens with an account of the victory of Count Plunkett, father of the executed 1916 leader, Joseph Plunkett, in the February 1917 bye-election in North Roscommon. This was the first opportunity the Irish people had to show their support for the ideals of the 1916 leaders electorally. The book concludes with an account of the asassination of Seargent King of the "Castlerea Murder Gang" of the Black and Tans on the morning of the truce in July 1921. In between it details raids, ambushes, reprisals and escapes at Rockingham, Ballymote, Knockcroghery, Ballaghadrreen, Teevnacreeva, Ballinlough, Frenchpark, Fouremilehouse, Carrick-on-Shannon, Elphin, Keadue, Scramogue, Loughglynn, Athlone and Boyle. It tells the story of key figures in the area such as Fr. Michael O'Flanagan, Paddy Moran, Fr. Malachy Brennan, Joe Tormey and the many brigades and companies of the North and South Roscommon Volunteer battalions and the neighbouring counties with which they worked. It also looks back to the county's Fenian heritage in the figure of Ned Duffy.

Book General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns Parishes and Baronies of Ireland

Download or read book General Alphabetical Index to the Townlands and Towns Parishes and Baronies of Ireland written by and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1984 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all genealogical work the first and most important step is to establish the geographical origin of the ancestor. In Irish research the genealogist may know the name of the county where the ancestor lived but be puzzled about a place name given as the place of birth or residence. In all probability the place-name s that of a townland, the smallest territorial subdivision in Ireland. Since research in Ireland will usually start at the parish level, there must be a reference tool that will key the townland to the parish in which it is located. This work was prepared under the auspices of the British government for almost that purpose. The over 900 densely printed pages show the county, barony, parish, and poor law union in which the 70,000 townlands were situated in 1851, as well as the location of the townlands on the Great Ordnance Survey maps, with appendices containing separate indexes to parishes and baronies.

Book Social Conflict in Pre famine Ireland

Download or read book Social Conflict in Pre famine Ireland written by Michael Huggins and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author investigates social conflict in Roscommon during the fifty years before the Famine. He demonstrates that both nationalist and modernization explanations of social conflict in pre-Famine Ireland are unsatisfactory. Where nationalist historiography viewed such conflicts as proto-national, and modernization theories saw them as primitive rebellions, Huggins considers that pre-Famine unrest is best understood in terms of an Irish 'moral economy' in which traditional and customary notions of justice and rights were conjoined with radical ideas. He examines the use of the 'moral economy' concept in an Irish context, assesses the reliability of the sources and conducts a detailed analysis of the evidence from Co. Roscommon, concluding that pre-Famine popular protest originated in considerably more complex and sophisticated beliefs, influences and objectives than has hitherto been understood.
