Book excerpt: The corrosion of 304L and 309SCb stainless steel was studied in HF--HNO/ sub 3/ solutions proposed for the Thorex process. Except for the dissolving and waste evaporation steps in the Thorex process, corrosion of 304L and 309SCb is not expected to exceed that experienced in the Purex process. To minimize the high initial corrosion rate of 309SCb in the boiling HF-- HNO/sub 3/ dissolving solution, a heel of thorium should be maintained in the dissolver. The corrosion rate of 304L in the low activity waste evaporator can be reduced by adding one mole of aluminum per mole of fluoride to the evaporator feed. (auth).

Book THOREX PILOT PLANT CORROSION STUDIES

Download or read book THOREX PILOT PLANT CORROSION STUDIES written by and published by . This book was released on 1959 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The corrosion behavior of types 304L and 309SCb stainless steel was examined during the production and first half of the development periods of Thorex pilot plant operation between December 15, 1954 and November 10, 1955. The process vessels in which corrosion data were obtained included the batch dissolver tank the feed adjustment tank the AP catch tank and the BT vapor separator. There was no significant difference between the corrosion resistance of the two alloys in any of the environments. Vapor-phase corrosion attack in some vessels was more severe than solution-phase attack in the same vessels, Dependent upon the particular process environment, corrosion rates in the vapor phase ranged from 0.1 to 46 mpy; solution-phase corrosion rates ranged from 0.1 to 28 mpy. The most severe attack in both solution and vapor phases occurred in the feed adjustment tank There was serious corrosion in the BT vapor separator also. Corrosion was moderate (8 mpy or less) in the batch dissolver tank and was almost negligible (0.2 mpy or less) in the AP catch tank. The attack on rolled surfaces of both types of stainless steel was uniform, with the exception that shallow, intergranular penetration was experienced in the more corrosive environments. Edge-surface attack was intense in the latter environments also and introduced some question as to the validity of corrosion rates based upon total attack on specimens. Neither of the alloys, initially stressed at 35,000 psi, experienced stress-corrosion cracking in any of the environments, nor was there any evidence of a stress-induced acceleration in the rates of attack Weld specimens of both alloys underwent preferential attack at the weld-parent metal interface in a number of the environments; the frequency of the attack was random in nature, however. Neither alloy was subject to crevice corrosion nor was accelerated corrosion at solution-vapor interfaces observed. (auth).

Book THOREX PILOT PLANT CORROSION STUDIES

Download or read book THOREX PILOT PLANT CORROSION STUDIES written by and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion data for types 304L, 309SCb, and 347 stainless steel were obtained in a number of process vessels in the ORNL Thorex pilot plant during the development and the production-development periods of operation occurring between December 1954 and September 1956. Stressed corrosion-test specimens were exposed in the batch dissolver tank, the feed adjustment tank, the BT vapor separator, the A-column feed tuink, and the BTC catch tank Generally, types 304L and 3O9SCb stainless steel exhibited comparable corrosion resistance in all environments examined. Most of the studies were conducted with these two alloys. Severe corrosion damage was encountered in the vapor phase of both the batch dissolver twin, operated at a maximum temperature of 115 deg C, and the feed adjustment tank, operated at a maximum temperature of 155 deg C. Corrosion rates for types 304L and 309SCb stainless steel varied from approximately 30 to 55 mpy in the batch dissolver tank during the development and the production-development periods. Vapor-phase corrosion rates in the feed adjustment tank during the lant haif of the development period ranged from 85 to 100 mpy. Severe corrosion attack was experienced also in the BT vapor separator, which operated at a maximum temperature of 115 deg C. Rates were 30 to 55 mpy for type 304L stainless steel, 25 mpy for type 3O9SCb stainless steel, and a maximum rate of 150 mpy for a composite specimen of types 3O9SCb and 347 stainless steel. Solution-phase corrosion rates for types 304L and 3O9SCb stainless steel in the batch dissolver tank ranged from 13 to 28 mpy, with the lower rates observed on the type 3O9SCb steel. The latter corroded at an average rate of 41 mpy in the feed adjustment tank, however. No data were available for type 304L stainless steel in the solution phase of this vessel. The corrosion of types 3O4L and H7 stainless steel was negligible in the A-column feed tank and the BTC catch tank; observed rates were less toan 0.1 mpy. (auth).
