Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thougtit that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 31 (thesis year 1986) a total of 11 ,480 theses titles trom 24 Canadian and 182 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base tor these titles reported will greatly enhance the value ot this important annual reterence work. While Volume 31 reports theses submitted in 1986, on occasion, certain univer sities do re port theses submitted in previousyears but not reported at the time.

Book Stress Corrosion Cracking

Book excerpt: The problem of stress corrosion cracking (SCC), which causes sudden failure of metals and other materials subjected to stress in corrosive environment(s), has a significant impact on a number of sectors including the oil and gas industries and nuclear power production. Stress corrosion cracking reviews the fundamentals of the phenomenon as well as examining stress corrosion behaviour in specific materials and particular industries. The book is divided into four parts. Part one covers the mechanisms of SCC and hydrogen embrittlement, while the focus of part two is on methods of testing for SCC in metals. Chapters in part three each review the phenomenon with reference to a specific material, with a variety of metals, alloys and composites discussed, including steels, titanium alloys and polymer composites. In part four, the effect of SCC in various industries is examined, with chapters covering subjects such as aerospace engineering, nuclear reactors, utilities and pipelines. With its distinguished editors and international team of contributors, Stress corrosion cracking is an essential reference for engineers and designers working with metals, alloys and polymers, and will be an invaluable tool for any industries in which metallic components are exposed to tension, corrosive environments at ambient and high temperatures. Examines the mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking (SCC) presenting recognising testing methods and materials resistant to SCC Assesses the effect of SCC on particular metals featuring steel, stainless steel, nickel-based alloys, magnesium alloys, copper-based alloys and welds in steels Reviews the monitoring and management of SCC and the affect of SCC in different industries such as petrochemical and aerospace

Book The Influence of Salt Water on Fatigue Crack Growth in High Strength Structural Steels

Download or read book The Influence of Salt Water on Fatigue Crack Growth in High Strength Structural Steels written by TW. Crooker and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth is a potential failure mechanism that can be strongly influenced by a salt-water environment. This paper discusses fatigue-crack-propagation studies performed on three high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.25C, 12Ni 180-grade maraging, and 18Ni 200-grade maraging. Each steel underwent a program of fatigue cycling in two environments, a "dry" environment consisting of ambient room air and a "wet" environment consisting of 3.5 percent NaCl salt water. Relationships for fatigue-crack-growth rates as a function of the fracture mechanics stress-intensity factor (K) were obtained experimentally for each steel in both environments. The engineering significance of these relationships is presented in terms of stress levels and flaw sizes relevant to the steels under investigation. The results of this work indicate that, in an air environment, the fatigue-crack-growth rate correlates with the stress-intensity-factor range according to the power-law relationship, da/dN = C (?K)m. Fatigue-crack growth in each of the steels was accelerated by the salt-water environment. However, the environmental response varied significantly, depending upon the material and the ?K level. The lower-toughness steel was less affected by environment, and environmental effects in all the steels diminished with increasing ?K levels. No correlation was observed between fatigue-crack-growth behavior in the salt-water environment and the stress-corrosion-cracking parameter (K Iscc) obtained on the same materials.

Book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Initiation Behavior of Four Structural Steels

Download or read book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Initiation Behavior of Four Structural Steels written by Novak, SR. and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to investigate the corrosion-fatigue crack initiation (CFCI) behavior of steels with nominal yield strengths from 248 to 1034 MPa (36 to 150 ksi). Notched specimens were exposed to a 3.5% NaCl solution under constant-load-amplitude conditions at a stress ratio R of 0.10 and at a cyclic frequency of 12 cycles per minute (0.2 Hz). Results of crack-initiation life (NI) were characterized in terms of cyclic stress-intensity range normalized relative to notch-tip root radius [(?K/??)] and in terms of cyclic-stress range at the notch tip (??max).

Book Effects of Flowing Natural Seawater and Electrochemical Potential on Fatigue Crack Growth in Several High Strength Marine Alloys

Download or read book Effects of Flowing Natural Seawater and Electrochemical Potential on Fatigue Crack Growth in Several High Strength Marine Alloys written by FD. Bogar and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack propagation studies were conducted on specimens of four high-strength marine alloys to determine the sensitivity of fatigue-crack growth rates to seawater and electrochemical potential. The materials studied included HY-130 steel, 17-4 PH steel in several combinations of melt processing and temper, Ti-6A1-2Cb-1Ta-0.8Mo, and 5456-H116 aluminum. Fatigue testing was conducted at low cyclic frequency, and the fatigue data are presented in terms of fatigue-crack growth rate (da/dN) versus crack-tip stress-intensity factor range (?K). Specimens were exposed to fresh flowing natural seawater under freely corroding and potentiostat-controlled electrochemical conditions while undergoing corrosion-fatigue testing. The results of this investigation reveal significantly distinct differences among the four alloys under the conditions of corrosion fatigue. Both seawater and potential acted to accelerate crack growth rates in the ferrous alloys, which proved to be much more sensitive to seawater and negative potential than the nonferrous alloys studied. The titanium alloy exhibited no measurable sensitivity to either seawater or negative potential. The aluminum alloy exhibited only moderate sensitivity to seawater and beneficial effects from both positive and negative potentials. These exploratory studies indicate that high-strength marine alloys exhibit widely differing responses to corrosion-fatigue crack growth and that high-strength steels currently aimed for marine service are among the alloys most deleteriously affected.

Book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior Above and Below K Sub Iscc

Download or read book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior Above and Below K Sub Iscc written by and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to contrast the salt water corrosion fatigue crack propagation behaviors observed in the two regimes of no measurable sustained load crack propagation and of measurable stress-corrosion cracking rates. A typical structural steel, HY-80 steel, having intermediate strength and high toughness, was selected for its high resistance to environmental cracking under sustained load. A high-strength 4340 steel which was previously shown to be highly susceptible to environmental cracking under sustained loads was chosen for the study.
