Muscle strength and power has shown to help increase throwing velocity through resistance training research however themajority of research has focused on the upper body. The present study sought to determine if bilateral or unilateral lower body field testing correlates with throwing velocity and if so to what extent. Throwing velocity scores were correlated to the following tests; medicine ball scoop toss and squat throw, bilateral and unilateral vertical jumps, single and triple broad jumps, hop and stop in both directions, lateral to medial jumps, 10 and 60 yard dash, and both left and right single leg 10 yard hop for speed in 42 college baseball players. It was hypothesized that the concentric strength of the trail leg and the eccentric strength of thelead leg will correlate positively with throwing velocity. A stepwise multiple regression analysis, assessing therelationship between shuffle and stretch throwing velocities and lower body field test results determined that right handed throwing velocity from the stretch position was significantly predicted by lateral to medial jump right (LMJR) and body weight (BW) R2 =0.322, whereas lateral to medial jump left (LMJL) R2 = 0.688 significantly predicted left stretch throw. Right handed shuffle throw was significantly related to LMLR and Medicine Ball scoop R2 =0.338; whereas, LMJL, BW and LMJR significantly contributed to left handed shuffle throw R2=0.950. Overall, this study found that lateral to medial jumps were consistently correlated with highthrowing velocity in each of the throwing techniques, in both left and right handed throwers. This is relevant because it is the first study to our knowledge to correlate throwing velocity with a unilateral jump in thefrontal plane, mimicking the action of the throwing stride.

Most studies have focused on training the upper part of the body, neglecting the impact the lower body has on the throwing motion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of lower body training on throwing velocity when combined with short and long toss throwing programs. Methods: Twenty Four members of a collegiate baseball team were placed into 4 groups according to their pre-test throwing velocity and participated in a 5-week throwing and training program. Two of the groups performed short toss (ST and STWT), with one short toss group also involved in weight training exercises. The other two groups threw long toss (LT and LTWT) and one of those groups participated in the weight training program. Results: Twenty-two participants completed the five-week training protocol and were considered in data analysis. There was no significant interaction between time (pre vs. post) and group, F(2, 18)=0.611, p>.05. There were no significant main effects for time (pre to post), F(1, 18)=0.496, p>.05 or group (LT, ST, LTWT, STWT), F(2, 18)=.061, p>.05. This five week strength training and throwing program had no effect on throwing velocity"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Throwing is a complex biomechanical feat that requires a balance between mobility and stability of the human kinetic chain. Shoulder muscle weakness and adaptive tissue changes have been proposed as a possible risk for developing injury. Objective quantification of anthropometric characteristics has been identified in a population of professional baseball pitchers, but there is a paucity in the literature regarding the adolescent pitcher. The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics of healthy adolescent pitchers and determine the relationships between shoulder passive range of motion, eccentric strength, field-testing performance and other anthropometric data to pitching velocity. Thirty-seven healthy Babe Ruth baseball players age 14-15 were tested bilaterally for selected anthropometric and field testing measurements to determine if the throwing side differed in strength, range of motion, and various performance measures from the nonthrowing side. Passive internal and external range of motion was bilaterally measured at 90° of abduction. Muscle strength of the supraspinatus, handgrip, and internal and external glenohumeral rotators were measured with a hand-held dynamometer. Field-testing consisted of the following tests: sit-ups, medicine ball throw, standing long jump, and Davies Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test. Correlational statistics were used to determine if any of these characteristics were significant predictors for pitch velocity in adolescent pitchers. No significant strength difference existed between extremities in external rotator, internal rotator, or supraspinatus strength. However, a significant difference of handgrip strength existed in the pitching arm as compared to the nonpitching arm. When compared to the nonpitching arm, the bilateral glenohumeral passive range of motion tests demonstrated greater passive external rotation in 90° of abduction in the pitching arm of adolescent players. Results demonstrated significantly greater distance by the nonpitching side during the single-leg hop test. Furthermore, this study identified external rotation strength and the single-leg hop test (stride leg) distance as two significant predictors for pitch velocity in adolescent pitchers. The strength, range of motion, and performance characteristics identified in this study can assist the practitioner in evaluating and treating adolescent athletes who use overhead throwing motions.

The current study examined several kinematic variables and their relationship with ball velocity in middle and high school-aged baseball players using two-dimensional (2D) motion analysis. The purpose of this study was to investigate these relationships using 2D motion analysis and compare these results to those reported in the literature using 3D analysis. Thirteen baseball players (15.31 ± 1.25 yrs., 72.29 ± 10.79 kg and 177.09 ± 5.59 cm tall) participated in the study. A video camera was used to record three throwing trials for each participant. Four reflective markers were placed on the participants to identify anatomical landmarks of interest on the players. Video trials were digitized in 2D using commercially available Dartfish software. Trunk side bend and knee flexion angle at foot contact, and trunk flexion, knee flexion, and knee extension velocity at ball release were calculated. Twenty-one baseball players, mean # SD age, height, and weight of 16.7 # 1.2 yr., 71.1 # 3.1 in., and 168.1 # 29.9 lb, respectively, were assigned to a control or experimental group. Pre-test and post-test throwing velocities were measured with a radar gun. The experimental group participated in a strength-training program three time a week for six weeks. Data was analyzed with an ANOVA. There was no significant interaction between the experitmental group (n=10) (pre-test) 68.3 mph, post-test 69.6 mph) and the control group (n=8) (pre-test 69.3 mph, post-test 69.6 mph) over time. There was no main effect (n=18) for time; pre-test vs. post-test velocities 68.7 mph and 69.6 mph, respectively, or for group; control vs. experimental. It can be concluded that a six-week strength-training program has no effect on throwing velocity.
