Book excerpt: Laminar heat transfer rate distributions were measured in the separated regions of a two-dimensional backward facing step, an axially symmetric backward facing step, a blunt two-dimensional base, a sharp protruding two-dimensional leading edge and in the leading edge bubble over the surface of a flat nosed two-dimensional model. The first three configurations had an initial boundary layer ahead of separation, while in the last two configurations separation occurred at the leading edge with approximately zero boundary layer thickness. All measurements were performed in the straight section of a shock tube. Maximum and average heat transfer rates were measured in the reattachment zone and over the separated region. (Author).

Book excerpt: Heat transfer rates are measured in the separated flow region behind the two-dimensional sharp protruding leading edge step model (boundary layer thickness is zero at the separation point) in the high enthalpy laminar near subsonic and supersonic flow in the shock tube. The measurements are carried out in a shock Mach number range from 2.3 to 10, and a corresponding flow Mach number range from 0.5 to 2.62. The Reynolds number, which is based on the height of the leading edge above the flat plate where the heat transfer rates are measured, varies from 300 to 17,000, and the local Reynolds number on the plate varies from 700 to 290,000. The results are correlated in terms of the non dimensional parameters of Nusselt number as a function of the Mach and Reynolds numbers and stagnation to wall enthalpy ratio. The variations of local, average and maximum heat transfer rates are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Heat transfer rates to a two dimensional blunt base of a wedge-flat plate model are measured in a laminar supersonic flow in the shock tube. The measurements are carried out in a shock Mach number range from 2.6 to 11, and a corresponding flow Mach number range from 1.04 to 2.74. The Reynolds numbers, based on the model chord, are varied between 5000 to 500,000. The ratio of local heat transfer rate on the base to the flat plate heat transfer rate is evaluated from the measurements and the flow conditions of the various experiments. In all cases these measurements indicate a hot peak at the base center, and in some cases there are additional smaller peaks towards the base corners. The maximum and the average heat transfer rates to the base are found to be only slightly sensitive to shock Mach number, being 0.5 and 0.3 of q sub (f.p.) respectively, except in the case of choked flow (i.e. nearly sonic separation) where the average heat transfer rate approaches the value of the flat plate heat transfer rate.
