Book The Relationship Between Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Middle School Students as Measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills

Download or read book The Relationship Between Reading and Mathematics Achievement of Middle School Students as Measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills written by Federico Hernandez and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills and the mathematics achievement of middle school students in a large urban school district in southwestern United States as assessed by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. A correlational research design was used to study this relationship. The participants were current high school students who were administered both the Reading and Mathematics sections of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in their sixth, seventh, and eighth grade year in middle school (N = 652). A bivariate analysis using the Pearson product-moment correlation technique was used to determine the strength and direction of the relationship between the three different levels of reading achievement and mathematics achievement as measured by the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. Students who achieved a Commended performance and a Met Standard performance in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, all yielded a correlation coefficient that was statistically significant with a p-value .01. This also held true for the overall relationship in sixth (r = + .481 and N =652), seventh (r = + .537 and N = 652), and eighth (r = + .385 and N = 652) grade. These results suggest that there is a moderate to strong relationship between the reading achievement and mathematics achievement of sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students who achieved a Commended or Met Standard performance on the reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills. The seventh grade students who achieved a Did Not Meet Standard in the Reading section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills, N = 53, yielded a correlation coefficient, r = + .325, which was statistically significant with a p-value

Book Student Motivation and Academic Achievement

Download or read book Student Motivation and Academic Achievement written by Erik Anthony Ruzek and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the causes and consequences of teachers' contributions to students' academic motivation and mathematics achievement during middle school. The middle school transition is a period marked by normative declines in students' engagement, motivation, and academic achievement. In this dissertation I investigate whether a teacher's ability to influence his/her students' motivation to learn, in addition to being important in its own right, may partially explain why teachers differentially impact student learning during this critical educational period. I focus on students' motivations for engaging and persisting in learning activities (i.e., achievement goals). Using value-added models, I find that variability in teachers' motivational contributions, though smaller than variability in their achievement contributions, can help stave off first year middle school declines in mastery goals by as much as 30%. While teacher contributions to students' mastery goals are positively associated with short-term achievement gains in the middle school transition year (d = 0.05), this association is smaller than that observed for students having teachers with above-average achievement value-added scores (d = 0.12). A longer-term achievement payoff (based on high school exit examination scores in 10th grade) is observed when students' had seventh and eighth grade teachers with above-median contributions to their students' mastery goals (d = 0.18, p

Book A Comparison of Academic Achievement for Seventh and Eighth Grade Students from Montessori and Non Montessori School Programs

Download or read book A Comparison of Academic Achievement for Seventh and Eighth Grade Students from Montessori and Non Montessori School Programs written by Robin McDurham and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a difference exists between the academic progress of seventh and eighth grade students who attended Texas public Montessori schools and the academic progress of their peers who attended matched non- Montessori schools. Specifically, this study sought to determine whether students enrolled in Montessori programs had higher percentages of passing rates on state mandated criterion referenced tests than students enrolled in non-Montessori programs for early adolescents. Research questions were posed and corresponding research hypotheses were tested within the subject matter disciplines of reading and mathematics in the seventh grade and within the subject matter disciplines of reading mathematics, science, and social studies in the eighth grade. In all but one analysis, the Montessori students had higher passing percentages than non-Montessori students. Seventh grade Montessori students had higher passing percentages in math and higher passing percentages in reading. Eighth grade Montessori students had higher passing percentages on reading, science, math and social studies. The study provided evidence that Montessori programs for early adolescents produce favorable academic outcomes when compared with their matched non-Montessori counterparts in public schools.
