Book Assessing Hunting Participation Correlates in Ohio

Download or read book Assessing Hunting Participation Correlates in Ohio written by Adam Levi Pettis and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a relatively short period of time, hunting has progressed from an activity vital to human survival to a form of outdoor recreation that represents a net monetary loss for most participants. Hunting participation in the United States is in long term decline, but with occasional spikes in popularity. With declining participation, the importance of hunting as an economic activity has waned, and wildlife professionals and social scientists have struggled to find viable, predictable, cost effective ways to influence hunting initiation and continuation (also referred to as "recruitment" and "retention"). While early literature concerning hunting participation has certainly advanced from hunter tallies and animal harvests trends, gaps exist in understanding what factors influence hunting participation. A preliminary step in understanding these gaps is to situate the existing body of research on hunting participation within the social science disciplines of sociology, psychology, and social psychology. The goal is to trace how theory from these disciplines has been used to understand hunting participation and thereby identify biases and blind spots in the existing literature. Once the field has been situated two questions that speak to long-term trends in hunting participation can be examined. Specifically, (a) how increasingly popular support for alternative food impacts hunting participation, as well as (b) how do economic characteristics influence shifting value orientations presumed to affect attitudes toward hunting and other forms of outdoor recreation. The increasing popularity of alternative food ideologies has generated excitement among many wildlife professionals, who suspect alternative food supporters may be attracted to hunting due to perceived benefits of wild game meat, but little rigorous quantitative research exists on this subject. Similarly, though research on wildlife-related value orientations provided new avenues to examine hunting participation trends, tests are limited and concentrated in the western United States. Also, the methods and measurement employed in such studies have exhibited some inconsistency. The current work will clarify: the origins and current disciplinary affiliation of hunting participation literature, the relationship of alternative food support with prohunting behaviors and attitudes, and the relationship between value orientations and socioeconomic characteristics of individuals in Ohio.

Book Ohio Resident Outdoor Recreation Survey

Download or read book Ohio Resident Outdoor Recreation Survey written by Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Lake Erie to the Ohio River, Ohio offers a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities in local, state and national parks, recreation areas, and preserves. Outdoor recreation involves many activities, including walking, fishing, boating, cycling, and playing sports. Building on the successes of past outdoor recreation surveys conducted in 1997, 2006, and 2013, the George Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs (GVS) at Ohio University was contracted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Office of Real Estate and Land Management (ODNR) to perform an updated survey in 2017. Ohio residents were electronically queried by household on their opinions on how to improve, sustain, and develop outdoor recreation experiences and opportunities on public land in their state. Similar to past SCORP surveys that investigated state and ODNR regional trends, the 2017 survey covered topics of interest, participation, satisfaction, and expenditures in recreational activities, as well as barriers to recreational activity participation and preferences for the allocation of taxpayer money on public outdoor recreation. With over 5,000 electronic submissions, this survey had an additional focus on urban and rural areas. Information compiled from this Ohio Resident Outdoor Recreation Survey will be incorporated into ODNR's 2018 Statewide Comprehensive Outdoor Recreation Plan (SCORP)."--Page 10.

This book was released on 1966 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recreation phase of the Ohio River Basin Comprehensive Survey endeavors to determine the prospective demands and needs for water-related outdoor recreation opportunities in the Ohio River Basin in the years 1980, 2000, and 2020. The needs are presented relative to the supply in the base year, 1960. The methodology used in ascertaining the outdoor recreation demands and needs utilizes individual recreation activity participation rates and estimates of increases in recreation demand developed in the Outdoor Recreation Resources Review Commission Study Reports 1 through 27. Eight outdoor recreation activities considered in the ORRRC studies were determined to be water-enhanced or water-dependent and were used in developing the prospective demands for water-related recreation facilities in the basin. The selected activities were: swimming, boating, water skiing, picnicking, camping, sightseeing, nature walks, and hiking. The recreational needs (unsatisfied demands) in the basin were determined by relating inventoried 1960 supply to the estimated demands in the target years. The 1960 supply was considered to be the 1960 visitation at basin facilities administered by Federal, state, and local agencies and was obtained from the nationwide plan inventory developed by the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation in conjunction with Federal, state, and local agencies.
