The residents of the bucolic Massachusetts hamlet are up in arms. A developer has bought the sprawling Quigley homestead, and his construction crew is causing a ruckus digging up the land. The noise stops abruptly when a female skeleton is found buried in the garden. Hired to find out who killed Jane Doe—and why—cop-turned-investigator Rosco Polycrates and his wife, crossword editor Belle Graham, discover an insular community that doesn’t take kindly to outsiders. With the local police labeling it a cold case, they have their work cut out for them. Add arson and a double homicide, and the grid is set for a brainteaser that just might stump two of New England’s most dedicated crime busters—if it doesn’t kill them first. • Publisher : Harmony
  • Release : 2005-06-14
  • ISBN : 0767921607
  • Pages : 256 pages

Download or read book Crossworld written by Marc Romano and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2005-06-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sixty-four million people do it at least once a week. Nabokov wrote about it. Bill Clinton even did it in the White House. The crossword puzzle has arguably been our national obsession since its birth almost a century ago. Now, in Crossworld, writer, translator, and lifelong puzzler Marc Romano goes where no Number 2 pencil has gone before, as he delves into the minds of the world’s cleverest crossword creators and puzzlers, and sets out on his own quest to join their ranks. While covering the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament for the Boston Globe, Romano was amazed by the skill of the competitors and astonished by the cast of characters he came across—like Will Shortz, beloved editor of the New York Times puzzle and the only academically accredited “enigmatologist” (puzzle scholar); Stanley Newman, Newsday’s puzzle editor and the fastest solver in the world; and Brendan Emmett Quigley, the wickedly gifted puzzle constructer and the Virgil to Marc’s Dante in his travels through the crossword inferno. Chronicling his own journey into the world of puzzling—even providing tips on how to improve crosswording skills—Romano tells the story of crosswords and word puzzles themselves, and of the colorful people who make them, solve them, and occasionally become consumed by them. But saying this is a book about puzzles is to tell only half the story. It is also an explanation into what crosswords tell us about ourselves—about the world we live in, the cultures that nurture us, and the different ways we think and learn. If you’re a puzzler, Crossworld will enthrall you. If you have no idea why your spouse send so much time filling letters into little white squares, Crossworld will tell you – and with luck, save your marriage. CROSSWORLD | by Marc Romano ACROSS 1. I am hopelessly addicted to the New York Times crossword puzzle. 2. Like many addicts, I was reluctant to admit I have a problem. 3. The hints I was heading for trouble came, at first, only occasionally. 4. The moments of panic when I realized that I might not get my fix on a given day. 5. The toll on relationships. 6. The strained friendships. 7. The lost hours I could have used to do something more productive. 8. It gets worse, too. DOWN 1. You’re not just playing a game. 2. You’re constantly broadening your intellectual horizons. 3. You spend a lot of time looking at and learning about the world around you. 4. You have to if you want to develop the accumulated store of factual information you’ll need to get through a crossword puzzle. 5. Puzzle people are nice because they have to be. 6. The more you know about the world, the more you tend to give all things in it the benefit of the doubt before deciding if you like them or not. 7. I’m not saying that all crossword lovers are honest folk dripping with goodness. 8. I would say, though, that if I had to toss my keys and wallet to someone before jumping off a pier to save a drowning girl, I’d look for the fellow in the crowd with the daily crossword in his hand.

Book excerpt: Five Yuletide mysteries for readers to solve along with crossword legend Belle Graham and PI Rosco Polycrates The husband-and-wife sleuth team is back in five tales of holiday mystery and mayhem. “Holly, Jolly Roger” takes Belle and Rosco to sunny St. Lucia in the Caribbean as they try to decipher the clues to a legendary buried treasure. “The Mystery of Wordsworth House” may remain just that unless Belle and Rosco can turn their stay at a snowy Montreal inn into a chance for a family to solve the riddle of their past . . . with the help of a ghost. There’s no place like Las Vegas for the holidays, but “A Crossworder’s Gift” may never reach its intended recipient if Belle can’t match up the out-of-order clues strewn throughout a high roller’s suite to form a crossword puzzle that will lead to the cash. Guest of honor at a puzzle convention near the Grand Canyon, Belle—with the help of her detective husband, Rosco—must unravel a murdered crossworder’s last puzzle and testament in “The Eraser’s Edge.” When a blizzard strands a five-woman sewing circle, a “Cross Stitch” in time could save—or destroy—reputations and lives if a puzzling truth about a dead heiress is revealed. This ebook contains five crossword puzzles that can be downloaded as PDFs, with answers in the back of the book.

Book Resisting Arrest

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A volume in the Cultural Studies Series edited by Samir Dayal An innovative and entertaining look at genre, popular culture, enjoyment, and psychoanalysis. Detective fiction, a category that, broadly defined, runs the gamut from Oedipus Rex to "The Purloined Letter," continues to draw a range of fans and scholars, and to play a pivotal role in popular entertainment, contemporary literature, and psychoanalytic theory. But how do we derive pleasure from reading about or watching a detective’s exploits? Is our enjoyment in the vicarious experience of genius? Or in witnessing the commission of a crime, an equally vicarious experience of violence? Resisting Arrest looks at the detective genre in its many different cultural manifestations, from popular fiction (Christie) to high literature (Eco), from art films (Antonioni) to popular television series (Monk). In each case, Rushing finds that detective stories have less to do with fulfilling our hidden desires, as psychoanalytic explanations have traditionally asserted, than with purposively thwarting them. He argues that the genre is in fact constituted principally by the promises on which it fails to deliver, including the vicarious experience of both genius (readers expecting to play Sherlock Holmes are almost always cast as Watson) and antisocial violence, so that our pleasure is based on what Slavoj Zizek has called "the endless circulation around the always-missed object." Organized around the key ideas that structure the detective genre ("Desire," "Repetition," "Violence"), Resisting Arrest offers a thoroughly new interpretation that will appeal to scholars interested in questions about genre and cinema studies, popular culture, and psychoanalysis.

Book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised

Download or read book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised written by Colleen Barnett and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Book Variational Text Linguistics

Download or read book Variational Text Linguistics written by Christoph Schubert and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Owing to the ever-increasing possibilities of communication, especially with the advent of modern communication technologies, register analysis offers a constantly widening range of research opportunities. Still, research has mainly concentrated on well-established and frequent registers such as newspaper articles, while many descriptive and theoretical issues have not yet been sufficiently investigated. This volume gives a state-of-the-art insight into register studies and points out emerging trends as well as new directions for future research. Furthermore, it provides a forum for the description and discussion of registers which have not received an appropriate amount of attention so far. In particular, it deals with specialized offline and online registers, cross-register comparison as well as regional, contrastive, and diachronic register variation. In parallel to the new discipline of variational pragmatics, this volume aims to foster the discipline of ‘variational text linguistics’ and to initiate fundamental investigations in this area. This field of research provides new insights into the concept of register, since it covers both functional and regional types of textual variation.
