Book Agricultural Cooperatives

Download or read book Agricultural Cooperatives written by Glynn McBride and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genesis of this book dates back a number of years to an annual meeting of the American Institute of Cooperation. Cooperative leaders at that meeting openly expressed their feelings that they would like a much stronger commitment on the part of our land grant universities in particular and other educational institutions in general to creating a greater understanding of cooperatives and their role in our economy. Since I was in agreement with this position, the course in general group action which I was teaching was changed to emphasize the role of agricultural cooperatives. The need for a textbook designed to help in this emphasis became apparent. This book is the culmination of an effort to meet that need. This book has been prepared with the student and instructor in mind. It is based upon experience gained from many years of interaction with students in a classroom setting, in discussions with them after class hours, and after they had finished their degree requirements and had taken positions in jndustry, government, or elsewhere. While objectives of the book have remained relatively unchanged over time, the sub stance and format as means of meeting those objectives have changed from time to time as a result of these contacts and discussions. The input xiv Preface xv of students over the years as reflected in this product is gratefully acknowledged.

Book Cooperation in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cooperation in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by George Harold Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperation in Agriculture The American cooperative movement, even in the oldest cooperative organizations, is in the formative stage. The principles of cooperation are not generally understood, and few persons appreciate the difference between a cooperative organization formed for the benefit of its members, and a corporation formed for pecuniary profit. The so - called cooperative associations in the United States and Canada have usually been formed as corporations for profit, and do not differ in principle from the ordinary stock corporations, although an eflort has often been made by the organizers to conduct them along cooperative lines. The development of the agricultural cooperation move ment needs to be preceded in most of the states by legisla tion that will permit the formation of non-profit cooperative associations or the formation of profit corporations that can be operated legally for the benefit of the members. Book Cooperation in Agriculture

Download or read book Cooperation in Agriculture written by George Harold Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperation in Agriculture This volume is intended as a discussion of the principles that underlie the organization and management of the American cooperative associations in agriculture. The application of the methods of cooperation to the production, handling, distribution, and sale of farm crops and to other agricultural activities, is commanding the attention of farmers, legislators, and economic investigators throughout the United States and Canada. The American coöperative movement, even in the oldest coöperative organizations, is in the formative stage. The principles of cooperation are not generally understood, and few persons appreciate the difference between a cooperative organization formed for the benefit of its members, and a corporation formed for pecuniary profit. Book Agricultural Cooperatives In Transition

Download or read book Agricultural Cooperatives In Transition written by Csaba Csaki and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-11-28 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1993, this is a study of agricultural co-operatives. The farming structure in transition countries has shifted from dominance of large corporate farms to family smallholdings. Smallholders everywhere experience difficulties with access to market services, including sale of products, purchase of inputs, and acquisition of machinery; they suffer from credit shortages and have limited access to information and advisory services. The barriers to market access prevent smallholders from fully exploiting their inherent productivity advantages. Best-practice world experience highlights farmers' service cooperatives, created by grassroots users, as the most effective way of improving the market access of small farmers. Service cooperatives also help smallholders overcome market failures, when private business entrepreneurs are unwilling to provide services in areas that they judge unprofitable or unfairly exploit users through monopolistic practices. These difficulties and market failures are prominent in transition countries and scholars accordingly expected rapid development of agricultural service cooperatives in response to smallholder needs. The present volume explores gaps between expectations and reality.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Mutual Co Operative and Co Owned Business

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Mutual Co Operative and Co Owned Business written by Jonathan Michie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Mutuals and Co-Owned Business investigates all types of 'member owned' organizations, whether consumer co-operatives, agricultural and producer co-operatives, worker co-operatives, mutual building societies, friendly societies, credit unions, solidarity organizations, mutual insurance companies, or employee-owned companies. Such organizations can be owned by their consumers, the producers, or the employees - whether through single-stakeholder or multi-stakeholder ownership. This complex set of organizations is named differently across countries: from 'mutual' in the UK, to 'solidarity cooperatives' in Latin America. In some countries, such organizations are not even officially recognized and thus lack a specific denomination. For the sake of clarity, this Handbook will refer to member-owned organizations to encompass the variety of non-investor-owned organizations, and in the national case study chapters the terms used will be those most widely employed in that country. These alternative corporate forms have emerged in a variety of economic sectors in almost all advanced economies since the time of the industrial revolution and the development of capitalism, through the subsequent creation and dominance of the limited liability company. Until recently, these organizations were generally regarded as a rather marginal component of the economy. However, over the past few years, member-owned organizations have come to be seen in some countries, at least, as potentially attractive in light of their ability to tackle various economic and social concerns, and their relative resilience during the financial and economic crises of 2007-2013.
