Book excerpt: Downsizing is one of the most frequently used business strategies for reducing costs, returning firms to profit or for restructuring businesses following takeovers, mergers and acquisitions. Downsizing measures are also set to become much more prevalent in the public sector as governments seek to restrict levels of public spending. This book is one of the first to provide a thorough study of downsizing from a global perspective. It examines the phenomenon in its entirety, exploring how it is initiated and what the process of downsizing looks like. It also looks at the effects of downsizing at a number of different levels, from the individual (e.g., motivational effects, effects on health and stress levels) to the organizational (e.g., financial outcomes, reputational and productivity outcomes). Written by an international team of experts, the book provides a comprehensive overview of downsizing that examines both the strategic and human implications of this process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since 1989, the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Belgrade, has been the host of SymOrg, an event that promotes scientific disciplines of organizing and managing a business. Traditionally, the Symposium has been an opportunity for its participants to share and exchange both academic and practical knowledge and experience in a pleasant and creative atmosphere. This time, however, due the challenging situation regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided that all the essential activities planned for the International Symposium SymOrg 2020 should be carried out online between the 7th and the 9th of September 2020. We are very pleased that the topic of SymOrg 2020, “Business and Artificial Intelligence”, attracted researchers from different institutions, both in Serbia and abroad. Why is artificial intelligence a disruptive technology? Simply because “it significantly alters the way consumers, industries, or businesses operate.” According to the European Commission document titled Artificial Intelligence for Europe 2018, AI is a key disruptive technology that has just begun to reshape the world. The Government of the Republic of Serbia has also recognized the importance of AI for the further development of its economy and society and has prepared an AI Development Strategy for the period between 2020 and 2025. The first step has already been made: the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, after a public call, has selected and financed twelve AI projects. This year, more than 200 scholars and practitioners authored and co-authored the 94 scientific and research papers that had been accepted for publication in the Proceedings. All the contributions to the Proceedings are classified into the following 11 sections: Information Systems and Technologies in the Era of Digital Transformation Smart Business Models and Processes Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Sustainable Development Smart Environment for Marketing and Communications Digital Human Resource Management Smart E-Business Quality 4.0 and International Standards Application of Artificial Intelligence in Project Management Digital and Lean Operations Management Transformation of Financial Services Methods and Applications of Data Science in Business and Society We are very grateful to our distinguished keynote speakers: Prof. Moshe Vardi, Rice University, USA, Prof. Blaž Zupan, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, Prof. Vladan Devedžić, University of Belgrade, Serbia, Milica Đurić-Jovičić, PhD, Director, Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia, and Harri Ketamo, PhD, Founder & Chairman of HeadAI ltd., Finland. The Faculty of Organizational Sciences would to express its gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and all the individuals who have supported and contributed to the organization of the Symposium. We are particularly grateful to the contributors and reviewers who made this issue possible. But above all, we are especially thankful to the authors and presenters for making the SymOrg 2020 a success!

Book Strategic Redundancy Implementation

Download or read book Strategic Redundancy Implementation written by Madeleine Stevens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Redundancy, restructuring, downsizing. There are few, if any, other management books on this important topic, and yet the pace of redundancies has only accelerated in recent years. Coupled with this, many companies that implement redundancies as a cost-cutting exercise often fail to achieve their goal. Whilst viewed as an uncomfortable topic by many, guidance on how to implement a redundancy programme that is fair, proportionate and ultimately leads to improved organisational performance, has never been more needed. This book fills this important gap. It takes the reader through a redundancy implementation strategy – Re-Focus, Re-Organise and Re-Build – that incorporates the key aspects of planning and analysis, fairness and justice, and prepares management for redundancy implementation through training. What will your communications include? What will be your strategy for implementation? What training does your management need? Various helpful template examples are included for employee consultation, communication and training. The book will be invaluable for business managers, HR professionals, employee representatives and HR students.

Book Human Resource Management A Contemporary Text

Download or read book Human Resource Management A Contemporary Text written by Bhaskar Chatterjee and published by Sterling Publishers Pvt. Ltd. This book was released on with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm of employee management has undergone rapid transformation in the last decade, from comparative advantage to a state of continuous innovation, strategic intent and a holistic knowledge framework. This implies that to be successful, organisations have to develop and/ or seriously re-look at appropriate HRD strategies to tap the human potential within the organisation and align it with the overall corporate strategy. In an increasingly difficult global business scenario, where major decisions have gone awry plunging the world into an economic crisis, HRD professionals are compelled to grapple with progressively more complex issues. It is against this backdrop, that an attempt has been made to present the entire contemporary conceptual framework of human resource development in a refreshingly new style so as to facilitate devising of appropriate strategies for the organisation. Fortunately, there is a rich and growing base of theory, research, and practical experience in HRD efforts. This book has been written to help students, HRD professionals, and managers at all levels to take advantage of this. If they do so, they will increase their effectiveness, along with that of individuals with whom they work and the organisations of which they are a part. The book will serve primarily as a comprehensive text for undergraduate and graduate courses in business, management, public administration, educational administration, and other related fields. This, the FOURTH edition of the book, is a thoroughly revised and enlarged version that has been updated to reflect the thinking on HRD theory and practice that has taken place over the last few years. Some of the new features and improvements include: * New, contemporary case studies; * Discussion of recent thinking about the nature of managerial work, strategic management development, global management development, competency-based management education and development, and new practices in leadership and executive development; * Ideas, references and events updated right upto March, 2009; * Humorous cartoons; clearer, more explanatory diagrams. At the same time, care has been taken to maintain the elements that have made the previous editions a useful and meaningful resource to students and practitioners, including uncluttered writing, a comprehensive approach to HRD, a strong research base, and a balance between theory, research, and practice.

Book The End of Loyalty

Download or read book The End of Loyalty written by Rick Wartzman and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having a good, stable job used to be the bedrock of the American Dream. Not anymore. In this richly detailed and eye-opening book, Rick Wartzman chronicles the erosion of the relationship between American companies and their workers. Through the stories of four major employers -- General Motors, General Electric, Kodak, and Coca-Cola -- he shows how big businesses once took responsibility for providing their workers and retirees with an array of social benefits. At the height of the post-World War II economy, these companies also believed that worker pay needed to be kept high in order to preserve morale and keep the economy humming. Productivity boomed. But the corporate social contract didn't last. By tracing the ups and downs of these four corporate icons over seventy years, Wartzman illustrates just how much has been lost: job security and steadily rising pay, guaranteed pensions, robust health benefits, and much more. Charting the Golden Age of the '50s and '60s; the turbulent years of the '70s and '80s; and the growth of downsizing, outsourcing, and instability in the modern era, Wartzman's narrative is a biography of the American Dream gone sideways. Deeply researched and compelling, The End of Loyalty will make you rethink how Americans can begin to resurrect the middle class. Book Organizational Downsizing Discrimination and Corporate Social Responsibility

This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizational restructuring and corporate downsizing can have a significant impact on the perceived social responsibility and responsiveness of any firm. This book analyzes the phenomenon by identifying the nature and types of structural or functional relationships that exist between downsizing and organizational performance variables, on the one hand, and organizational social responsiveness on the other. It looks at changes in the use of various restructuring techniques to improve efficiency and effectiveness and the effects of these changes on the organizational citizenship standing in the community. It goes on to add to the understanding of the general phenomenon of downsizing by examining its relationship to the level and pervasiveness of corporate social responsibility. Karake-Shalhoub addresses three questions. First, is corporate downsizing related to improvement in organizational financial performance? Second, is there any relationship between downsizing and corporate social responsibility? Third, what is the nature of this relationship? The book will be attractive to management theory scholars, social responsibility and ethics researchers and practitioners, organizational development researchers and practitioners, and human resource scholars.

Book Demystifying Business Celebrity

Download or read book Demystifying Business Celebrity written by Eric Guthey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-09-10 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business celebrities such as Bill Gates, Richard Branson and Rupert Murdoch are among the most widely recognised, admired and sometimes even vilified individuals in the world. Like their celebrity peers from the entertainment, sports, arts and political worlds, business celebrities exert an influence that is pervasive, but difficult to assess, evaluate and explain. Business celebrities have been around for as long as big business itself, but this is the first book to provide a systematic exploration of how they are constructed and why they exist. Business celebrities include entrepreneurs, CEOs, and management gurus. The book argues that these individuals are not self-made, but rather are created by a process of widespread media exposure to the point that their actions, personalities and even private lives function symbolically to represent significant dynamics and tensions prevalent in the contemporary business environment. Demystifying Business Celebrity raises questions about the impact and significance of the production of celebrity upon our understanding of, and our ability to promote the practice of leadership in an enlightened manner. The book will prove a useful addition to the enlightened business student’s bookshelf and will be informative reading for all those with an interest in business and management.

Book Fat and Mean

Download or read book Fat and Mean written by David M. Gordon and published by Free Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s, economics experts have recommended "downsizing" as the best way for U.S. corporations to remain competitive. Reducing unnecessary staff would lower costs, increase profits, and transform these companies into lean, mean production machines. As many American businesses pursued this strategy - often in the wake of mergers and acquisitions that left them with an unwieldy layer of middle management - and raised their bottom line, it seemed the experts were right. Yet as David M. Gordon shows in this iconoclastic book, most of them have really only gone halfway. They are "mean", but far from lean. Instead of sharing profits with their employees, thus encouraging them to work harder, management has more often opted to prod workers by instilling fear of layoffs. Gordon unerringly plots the shortsighted and disastrous course of U.S. corporations, and documents the tremendous social and personal costs to their employees. Yet in addition to telling the harsh truth about downsizing, he suggests policies to ensure fairer business practices. Wages can increase - indeed, they must - as the economy begins to perform more efficiently. U.S. corporations have become fat and mean. They need to become lean and decent - not just for the sake of their workers, but for the sake of their competitive advantage. This provocative and original book shows how they can.
