One of the most challenging aspect of knowledge management is knowledge sharing. The knowledge sharing activities between the organizational members and sub-units facilitate the conversion of individual and collective knowledge into organizational knowledge, which eventually helps firms to successfully manage their knowledge assets. However, sharing knowledge in the workplace is not an easy process; there are several barriers and challenges that need to be addressed so as to successfully execute it. Researchers across the world agree that organization culture often acts as a critical barrier in the process of knowledge sharing and it needs to be addressed immediately so as to help firms in achieving their knowledge management goals.

The data required for the study has been conveniently collected from 250 teachers working in various higher educational institutions in the Kerala state. The study used PSL SEM for analysis and found that the organisational culture explain 35.9% the knowledge sharing practices of the teachers working in the higher education sector of the state. Out of the factors of organisational culture, communication, trust and organizational structure influence significantly the knowledge sharing practice of teachers.

Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The main question investigated in this European Research Project is whether corporate culture presents the biggest obstacle to knowledge management. To better answer this question two sub-questions are formulated: How does corporate culture influence the transfer of knowledge? and What are the key elements in a corporate culture that facilitate the process of knowledge transfer? In order to answer these questions this study contains three parts: the literature review, the field research, and analysis and discussion. The literature review explains the concepts of knowledge management and culture, discussing the relevant theories to each of the two. In the second part the methodology as well as the research site are stated and justified. Subsequently the results of the four case studies conducted are presented. The third part of this study analyses and interprets the findings with reference to the literature in order to answer the research questions. The limitations of the study will be discussed and recommendations for further research are offered. Last but not least, implications for the professional practice are pointed out. Corporate culture clearly influences the transfer of knowledge. This influence is exerted by some key elements as proposed by T. Davenport and L. Prusak (1998), such as trust between the knowledge provider and the knowledge receiver, shared language, (un)structured time and meeting places, the willingness to share, the willingness to apply 'foreign' knowledge, and the willingness to judge knowledge objectively. This research confirms that these elements are indeed vital and no additional elements could be identified. However, some components seem to be more influential than others. It is likely that their relative importance varies according to the industry investigated. Elements which do not pose any problems in the consulting industry, such as the willingness to apply 'foreign' knowledge and the objective judgement of knowledge, could probably present significant problems in other industries. It is advisable to look at these elements independently from the research site. According to these elements, the consulting industry is generally judged to be conducive to the transfer of knowledge, the obstacles faced in this industry appear to be of a more operational nature. Book excerpt: In recent years the concepts of knowledge management and corporate culture have often been in the centre of research projects aiming at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Is there a relationship between both potential competitive advantages? If so, what are the consequences? The author Julia Ihlenfeld gives a historical overview of both concepts and then analyzes their interface illustrated by a case study of three small companies from different sectors. She argues that the greater the knowledge transferred from a boss to the subordinates, the stronger is the company's tendency towards a collectivist approach rather than an individualist approach to its objectives, and the higher is the employees' motivation to fulfil their tasks within the organisation. This hypothesis has been tested quantitatively by means of a Likert-style rating scale. The analysis of the primary data shows that - in the framework of this case study - the extent of knowledge transfer is positively correlated with employee motivation and collectivism. This book aims at decision makers in the field of human resources, attractors of knowledge management as well as managers and any company doing business in this world where corporate culture and knowledge management are decisive success factors.

Ianni shows how the organized structure of the police department is disintegrating. The new "Management Cop Culture" is bureaucratically juxtaposed to the precinct level "Street Cop Culture," and bosses' loyalties to the social and political networks of management cops rather than to the men on the street causes a sharp division with grave consequences for the departments. The study concentrates on a series of dramatic events, such as the suicide of a police officer charged with corruption, a major riot, and the trial of an officer accused of killing a prisoner while in police custody. Ianni traces how these events affected relationships among fellow officers and between officers and "bosses."
