Book Corneal Damage from Infrared Radiation

Download or read book Corneal Damage from Infrared Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes research during the past year on: the damage mechanism for short (80 ns) pulses of CO2 laser radiation interacting with the cornea epithelium; epithelial damage from multiple-pulse exposures to more penetrating mid-infrared radiation from a Tm:YAG laser at 2.02 micro; and predictions of retinal damage thresholds for exposures to sources with rectangular irradiance distributions. Damage threshold measurements on corneas maintained at 21 C using single 80 ns pulses continue to support a thermal damage mechanism.

Book Corneal Damage From Mid Infrared Laser Radiation

Download or read book Corneal Damage From Mid Infrared Laser Radiation written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corneal epithelial damage thresholds for exposures to sequences of pulses of 1.55 jim infrared radiation produced by an Er fiber laser were investigated. Thresholds were determined for sequences of 8 to 128 pulses at a repetition frequency of 10 Hz and 8 to 256 pulses at 20 Hz. The duration of the individual pulses was 0.025 sec and the 1/e diameter of the laser beam was 0.1 cm. Threshold damage is correlated by an empirical power law of the form H(sub th) = CN(exp -a), in which H(sub th) is the threshold radiant exposure per pulse, and N is the number of pulses. The value of the exponent a is 0.32 for the 10 Hz exposures and 0.34 for the 20 Hz exposures. The constant C is 7.60 for the 10 Hz exposures and 5.99 for the 20 Hz exposures. Both values are greater than the estimated threshold for a single 0.025 sec pulse (4.90 J/sq cm). Thus the empirical power law breaks down for small numbers of pulses (viz., N

Book Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors

Download or read book Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors written by Winfried E. Alberti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiotherapy of Intraocular and Orbital Tumors presents a new approach to the role of radiation therapy in the management of ophthalmic cancer. The indications for ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging studies are analyzed, and treatment techniques, together with their results, are described for each tumor. Particle beam and plaque irradiation are reviewed, and conservative and surgical management of radiation effects are detailed. In the past, most books on this subject included a chapter on radiotherapy but emphasized the dangers of radiation complications. However, great progress in understanding the effects of irradiation upon the tissues of the eye and orbit, new therapeutic equipment, and new imaging techniques (CT, MRI) allow for careful treatment planning. This book has taken the long overdue step of reconsidering the role of irradiation of the eye so that it may take its place as a respected, rather than feared, treatment in the combined modality approach so important today. Together with experts in relevant fields, the editors have produced a refreshingly clear and thoroughly referenced volume which will be a valuable asset to all ophthalmologists, radiation oncologists, pediatricians, endocrinologists, oncologists, and residents in training, as well as to students in these disciplines.

Book Transmission of the Ocular Media

Download or read book Transmission of the Ocular Media written by Edward A. Boettner and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The spectral transmittance of ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared light through the ocular media of humans has been measured. Using freshly enucleated eyes, the transmittances of each component part (cornea, aqueous humor, lens, vitreous humor) were determined for the wavelength range from 0.22 to 2.8 microns. To date 9 eyes have been measured, ranging in age from 4 weeks to 75 years. Two types of measurements were made: the first to measure the total light transmitted (direct and scattered) at each wavelength and the second to measure the percent transmittance of that light passing directly through the various media without absorption or scattering. The results show that: (a) the transmission of ultraviolet radiation decreases with the age of the eye; (b) the transmission of infrared radiation appears to be independent of the age; and (c) the maximum total transmittance of the whole eye, about 81 percent, is obtained in the region from 600 to 850 millimicrons.

Download or read book Structural Alterations in the Cornea from Exposure to Infrared Radiation written by R. A. Farrall and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes our research on the interaction of infrared radiation, especially from high-intensity CO2 TEA lasers, with the cornea. The research reported here was performed between April 1, 1986 and April 14 1988. The report discusses threshold epithelial damage from single- and multiple-pulse exposures, material ejection from the anterior corneal surface, lesion histology, and possible damage mechanisms. Keywords: Laser effects; Laser hazards; RA 3; Cornea; Temporal; Spatial; Lab animals. (KT).

Book Corneal Injury Produced by CO2 Laser Radiation

Download or read book Corneal Injury Produced by CO2 Laser Radiation written by Howard M. Leibowitz and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pathological effects upon the eye of exposure to infrared laser radiation, emitted by a CO2 laser, was studied. A total of 142 rabbit eyes was irradiated at varying dose levels and each was observed for a period of two months. Within the limits of the power outputs and exposure times considered, clinically detectable ocular damage was limited to the cornea. Five clinical levels of corneal injury were defined and the dosage of CO2 laser radiation capable of producing each level of injury was determined. (Author).

Book A Preliminary Investigation of the Effects of Near Infrared Radiation on Visual Performance

Download or read book A Preliminary Investigation of the Effects of Near Infrared Radiation on Visual Performance written by Kevin Laxar and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simulated solar, near infrared radiation caused no eye damage or decrement in visual discrimination performance in Rhesus monkeys. The subjects tended to avoid the radiation, however. The study tests for a safe level of irradiance for repeated exposure to the near infrared in operational settings. Distance from the source is the limiting factor in exposure to infrared searchlights and signaling devices. No change in visor specification is required to protect Navy personnel from the sun's near infrared radiation, even at high altitudes. (Author).
