Book excerpt: England, 1941: With the Luftwaffe raging overhead and deafening explosions all around her, a young, terrified, Spanish Gypsy girl leaps from a window into the night. She is propelled through the bloody, war-torn streets of Plymouth, England, by the Gypsy fire that burns within her soul. Copper Tapestry is the timeless saga of Isabella Juarez, spanning two continents during the years of 1939 to 1973. She is struggling with an obstacle so daunting, that she is forced to make uncharacteristic decisions, manipulating her enemy, mob boss, Angelo DiGrazio. He is il Capo with his own agenda, protecting himself, no matter the price. An unfair fight begins with Angelos network, rules, and cover-ups. Isabella seems destined to live a life of compromise and tragedy. A chain of events unravels the twisted mystery as dark and deadly as the back roads of southern Italy where the last dark secret is revealed, the last tapestry thread is woven. Lives are lost and forever altered. Two very unlikely cultures clash in a stubborn battle of wills. Accurate historical facts blend with conflict and the consequences of decisions made in the face of war and blackmail. Lifelong bonds are woven between people with very different lives, yet all with one common goal.

Book The Coptic Tapestry Albums and the Archaeologist of Antino Albert Gayet

Download or read book The Coptic Tapestry Albums and the Archaeologist of Antino Albert Gayet written by Nancy Arthur Hoskins and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vibrant tapestries of beribboned birds, cantering centaurs, and Dionysian dancers, woven in Coptic Egypt more than a thousand years ago, were artfully arranged in a handsome pair of albums in 1913. Some of the fabrics are shown in unique collage compositions. Sandals, spindles, and a mysterious lock of hair are assembled in a shallow box at the back of one album. Many textiles in this important collection, housed at the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, were once joined by warp and weft with those from the Muse du Louvre and other major museums. Nancy Hoskins deftly interweaves the creation of the textiles in the Greco-Roman city of Antino, Egypt, with their discovery by the charismatic French archaeologist Albert Gayet (1856-1916). Gayet staged stunning exhibitions of the pieces in Paris at the turn of the century and ultimately gave them to museums or sold them. One collector, Henry Bryon, had his 144 fabrics bound into the two albums featured here. The album pages and covers are illustrated in glowing color, along with archival photographs from Gayet's expeditions. The style, structure, and iconography of each tapestry, tabby, and tablet-woven textile are discussed within the cultural construct of Late Antique and Early Christian Egypt. Detailed technical drawings illustrate the special weaving techniques of the Copts. Directions for six weaving projects inspired by the album fragments are included. The story of the inimitable Coptic tapestry albums will delight weavers, textile historians, art historians, and archaeologists. Nancy Arthur Hoskins, a former college weaving instructor, researched Coptic collections in over fifty museums around the world. She is the author of Universal Stitches for Weaving, Embroidery, and Other Fiber Arts and Weft-Faced Pattern Weaves: Tabby to Taquet. ÒMaster weaver, scholarly detective, and sensitive connoisseur, Nancy Hoskins combines all these skills to describe and identify this unusually wide range of Egyptian Coptic textile fragments. Her descriptions of weaving techniques create a fundamental glossary of technical terms, which all who study textiles should use. The detailed data on each piece are a benchmark for all who work in the field.Ó Ñ Jere L. Bacharach, Director, American Research Center in Egypt

Book Superior Tapestry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Deborah K. Frontiera
  • Publisher : Modern History Press
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN : 1615995889
  • Pages : 243 pages

Download or read book Superior Tapestry written by Deborah K. Frontiera and published by Modern History Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like any tapestry, the threads of history cross over and under each other in different points of view and places in time. Award-winning author Deborah K. Frontiera mixes natural science and geology into history where those aspects intersect with the lives of people or are the reason Michigan's Upper Peninsula developed the way it did. Enjoy this work’s unique perspective, the point of view of trees, rocks, rivers and artifacts—among them a ship’s bell, a lighthouse, a cross-cut saw, beads and rings given in trade, a bent propeller and many more. Students, adults and families will enjoy experiencing history in this unique way. "Deborah K. Frontiera takes U.P. history and turns it into a fun story, told by its least appreciated players. Here, we have the perspective of the St. Mary’s River, the bell on the Edmund Fitzgerald, an early iron forge, a sauna, the Bishop Baraga statue and many, many more. Together, they make Superior Tapestry a diverse and refreshing alternative to more straightforward historical narratives, while educating us in entertaining ways and, once again, displaying the creativity of Yooper culture." -- Tyler R. Tichelaar, Ph.D. in literature and award-winning author of Haunted Marquette and Kawbawgam: The Chief, The Legend, The Man "Frontiera has a knack for bringing inanimate objects to life and imbuing them with observational skills that let the reader see the world around the objects through their eyes. Human time is dwarfed when compared to the span of time experienced by some of the objects Frontiera describes. This book is such an interesting read; I’ll be using it as my guide when exploring the nooks and crannies of the Upper Peninsula in Michigan." -- Linda Martin-Rust, Ph.D. "What a fun way to learn about our Upper Peninsula history; a great book for all ages. Superior Tapestry will become one of your favorite UP books." -- Tony Bausano, president of Copper World Gift Shop, Calumet, Michigan Deborah Kay Olson Frontiera grew up in Lake Linden, Michigan. She taught in Houston public schools from 1985 until 2008 and then taught creative writing part-time for Houston’s WITS (Writers In The Schools) program.
