Book Copper and the Chilean Economy 1960 19 L159298

Download or read book Copper and the Chilean Economy 1960 19 L159298 written by Mr. Antonio Spilimbergo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper concludes that world copper prices play an important role in short-term fluctuations and probably influence long-term growth of the Chilean economy. While many mechanisms may be at work, investment seems to play a major role. In a copper price boom, the higher copper price and associated capital inflows create upward pressure on the real exchange rate. The appreciation of the Chilean peso during the first part of the copper cycle contributes to lower inflation, which could partly explain why real wages grow more rapidly in this part of the cycle.

Book Economics of Natural Resources the Environment and Policies

Download or read book Economics of Natural Resources the Environment and Policies written by E. Kula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic activities of humanity, particularly during the last couple of cen turies, have had a profound impact on the natural environment. Fast depletion of the world's forest resources, fish stocks, fossil fuels and mine deposits have raised many moral as well as practical questions concerning present and future generations. Furthermore, a number of global environmental problems such as acid rain, the 'greenhouse effect' and depletion of the ozone layer are causing concern throughout the world. What does economics say about the exploitation of nature's scarce resources? This book, which is a much expanded version of an earlier publication, Economics of Natural Resources and the Environment, aims mostly at final-year undergraduates reading subjects such as economics, business studies, environ mental science, forestry, marine biology, agriculture and development studies. There is also a good deal of material - especially in the chapters on fisheries, forestry, valuation and discounting - that post-graduate students may find useful as stepping-stones. The material presented stems from my lectures to final-year students at the University of Ulster during the last 12 years, and some of my ongoing research work. When I moved to Northern Ireland in 1982 I was given a course called 'Economics of Exhaustible Resources' to teach. This has changed its title and focus a number of times along with the structure of the University. My early reading lists included a number of journal articles and books written on the sub ject.

Book Poverty and Human Development Report 2002

Download or read book Poverty and Human Development Report 2002 written by Research & Analusis Working Group and published by Mkuki na Nyota Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Tanzania is committed to poverty reduction and the attainment of social and economic development. To this end, in the context of the Highly Indebted Poor Countries initiative, formulated the National Poverty Eradication Strategy as a medium term strategy. Part of the strategy to refine policies for poverty reduction is an extensive monitoring programme undertaken by various working groups. This is the report of the Research and Analysis Working Group carried out in the second year of the poverty eradication strategy. It presents an overview of the status of the main poverty indicators; including trends, magnitudes, urban poverty and vulnerability, rural-urban disparity and macro-micro economic linkage. The findings show that levels of poverty are high and do not show significant signs of decline especially in the rural areas. The decline in infant mortality appears to be reversing, with the spread of HIV/AIDS as a major cause, but more positively school enrolment has improved, following the abolition of fees. The report further identifies that good macroeconomic performance in the 1990s has not resulted in a reduction of poverty, and highlights groups which are at high risk of sliding into poverty and extreme poverty such as the unemployed, orphaned youth, the elderly and those involved in precarious activities such as commercial sex or quarrying. Finally the report proposes any legal or institutional changes, and refinements to its own analysis tools and framework

Book Tanzanian Development

Download or read book Tanzanian Development written by Andrew Coulson and published by Eastern Africa. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date, comparative, examination of the developing economy of Tanzania and its grass roots progress out of poverty, with pointers to its wider implications for policymakers, NGOS and practitioners. Over the past thirty years, in common with a number of other Sub-Saharan African countries, Tanzania has experienced a period of painful adjustment followed by relatively rapid and stable economic growth. However the extent of progress on poverty reduction and the sustainability of the development process are both open to question. In this book, prominent international observers provide a range of different perspectives on the process of development over time and the issues facing a rapidly growing African economy: political economy; agriculture and rural livelihoods; industrial development; urbanisation; aid and trade; tourism; and the use of natural resources. Comparisons are drawn with other African economies as well as other developing countries, such as Vietnam. An invaluable deep review of Tanzania's economy and development, the book also looks at the wider implications of the research for the futureon the continent and beyond. David Potts is Honorary Visiting Researcher at the University of Bradford and was Head of the Bradford Centre for International Development 2015-16. He worked for six years as an economist in Tanzania's Ministry of Agriculture in the 1980s, has had many subsequent short-term assignments in the country and is co-editor of Development Planning and Poverty Reduction (2003).
