Book The Hero Trap

Download or read book The Hero Trap written by Thomas Kolster and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most companies today are firmly on the social and environmental issues ‘bandwagon’, like bees around a honey pot, from plastic in oceans through to diversity. As a result, people are increasingly distrustful of these efforts which they view as cheap marketing stunts meant to wow people into buying more. "Try to fly like a superman, and you will come down like a tin of soup." Market economists have long told us that we’re driven only by money and status, but the inherent human truth that cuts across age, culture and gender uncovers a stronger force: we wish to be in charge of our own lives and our own happiness. Through extensive growth and affinity research, world-renowned purpose-pioneer, Thomas Kolster, uncovers a simple answer that is key to driving marketing growth in the 21st century: if you put people in control of the marketing mix, from products to promotion, they can grow and in turn grow your organisation. This book explains the meteoric rise of a company like AirBnB, how a 20-something Swede, Maria de la Croix, built a global coffee empire like Wheelys in just a few years, and how a group of friends hanging out in a bar in Melbourne created one of the largest global non-profits fighting for men’s health, Movember – and how you can empower people to do the same. Today’s power no longer rests in the hands of the privileged few, but in the talented many. It is time for you to unleash that power, in numbers. Drawing on top-line marketing case studies and in-depth interviews, Kolster demonstrates how people are truly motivated to act when they’re in charge of their own life and happiness. ‘Who can you help me become?’ is the one essential question you need to be asking and acting on to chart a new course for your organisation, changing behaviours at scale and unlocking sustainable growth that benefits all.

Book Childhood

Book excerpt: The celebrated Danish poet Tove Ditlevsen begins the Copenhagen Trilogy ("A masterpiece" —The Guardian) with Childhood, her coming-of-age memoir about pursuing a life and a passion beyond the confines of her upbringing—and into the difficult years described in Youth and Dependency Tove knows she is a misfit whose childhood is made for a completely different girl. In her working-class neighborhood in Copenhagen, she is enthralled by her wild, red-headed friend Ruth, who initiates her into adult secrets. But Tove cannot reveal her true self to her or to anyone else. For "long, mysterious words begin to crawl across" her soul, and she comes to realize that she has a vocation, something unknowable within her—and that she must one day, painfully but inevitably, leave the narrow street of her childhood behind. Childhood, the first volume in the Copenhagen Trilogy, is a visceral portrait of girlhood and female friendship, told with lyricism and vivid intensity.

Book The Anatomy House in Copenhagen

Download or read book The Anatomy House in Copenhagen written by Thomas Bartholin and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the dissection of bodies had already been allowed to form part of an education at European universities during the 1500s, an anatomical theatre was first established at the University of Copenhagen in 1644, that is to say, an auditorium where lectures on bodies could be held. In addition to serving the instruction of students and general research, it was here that professor of anatomy Thomas Bartholin demonstrated the existence of the thoracic duct and later the lymphatic vessels in a human being, an achievement bestowing immediate fame on Bartholin and resonating in learned circles throughout Europe. In 1662 Thomas Bartholin published A Short Description of the Anatomy House in Copenhagen. This book, which meticulously describes the layout of the Anatomy House together with the first eighteen years of its history, was composed in Latin, so that by this means it could make this institution known to an international public. These and other activities went on in the anatomical theatre until the great fire of 1728 in Copenhagen ravished it. Bartholin's publication survived, which in the narrower sense documents a part of the University's history and from a broader perspective gives an insight into the scientific ideal that provided the impetus behind anatomical studies in seventeenth-century Europe. Furnished with commentary by the editor Niels W. Bruun and an introduction by historian Morten Fink-Jensen, this first appearance of Bartholin's work in English, thus reaching a wider international audience, will undoubtedly consolidate its rightful position as an important contribution to the history of anatomical houses. The English translation was undertaken by Peter Fisher. The book contains 44 illustrations in colour and a revised critical edition of the Latin text by the editor.
