Book Force Under Pressure

Download or read book Force Under Pressure written by Lawrence N. Blum and published by Lantern Books. This book was released on 2001-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Force Under Pressure, Dr. Lawrence Blum, who has devoted his life's work to the survival and wellness of "those who serve," describes the sources of danger, injuries, and victory to police officers in a down-to-earth, readable style. Blum argues that there are missing "ingredients" in the training and socialization of police officers. These ingredients include techniques and tools to condition the officer's decision-making and concentration during conditions of emergency; internal controls necessary to maintain the will to survive; and aids that will prevent officers being defeated by any threat. Distressing and/or disturbing physical and psychological reactions are common in a police officer's workday, and the officer must be prepared for them. Blum's work has uncovered many of the casues of compromise to officer safety and wellness, and he contends that police officers will be well prepared to cope with unanticipated or rapidly changing encounters if they possess the right tools and the know-how to command and control field encounters and life's pressures. Here Blum provides practical tools for survival in law enforcement, by combining his clinical knowledge with true stories of police officers for an attention-grabbing and informative book.

Book The Black and the Blue

Download or read book The Black and the Blue written by Matthew Horace and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Longlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction "A MUST-READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERSECTION OF RACE AND POLICE BRUTALITY IN AMERICA."-CONGRESSMAN JOHN LEWIS During his 28-year career, Matthew Horace rose through the ranks from a police officer working the beat to a federal agent working criminal cases in some of the toughest communities in America to a highly decorated federal law enforcement executive managing high-profile investigations nationwide. Yet it was not until seven years into his service- when Horace found himself face down on the ground with a gun pointed at his head by a white fellow officer-that he fully understood the racism seething within America's police departments. Through gut-wrenching reportage, on-the-ground research, and personal accounts from interviews with police and government officials around the country, Horace presents an insider's examination of archaic police tactics. He dissects some of the nation's most highly publicized police shootings and communities to explain how these systems and tactics have hurt the people they serve, revealing the mistakes that have stoked racist policing, sky-high incarceration rates, and an epidemic of violence. "Horace's authority as an experienced officer, as well as his obvious integrity and courage, provides the book with a gravitas."-THE WASHINGTON POST "The Black and the Blue is an affirmation of the critical need for criminal justice reform, all the more urgent because itcomes from an insider who respects his profession yet is willing to reveal its flaws."-USA TODAY

Download or read book Cop in the Hood written by Peter Moskos and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Harvard-trained sociologist Peter Moskos left the classroom to become a cop in Baltimore's Eastern District, he was thrust deep into police culture and the ways of the street--the nerve-rattling patrols, the thriving drug corners, and a world of poverty and violence that outsiders never see. In Cop in the Hood, Moskos reveals the truths he learned on the midnight shift. Through Moskos's eyes, we see police academy graduates unprepared for the realities of the street, success measured by number of arrests, and the ultimate failure of the war on drugs. In addition to telling an explosive insider's story of what it is really like to be a police officer, he makes a passionate argument for drug legalization as the only realistic way to end drug violence--and let cops once again protect and serve. In a new afterword, Moskos describes the many benefits of foot patrol--or, as he calls it, "policing green."

Book Protecting Traditional Knowledge

Download or read book Protecting Traditional Knowledge written by Daniel F. Robinson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive review of the Intergovernmental Committee (IGC) of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) established in 2000. It provides an in-depth consideration of the key thematic areas within WIPO discussions – genetic resources (GRs), traditional knowledge (TK) and traditional cultural expressions (TCEs) through the perspectives of a broad range of experts and stakeholders, including indigenous peoples and local communities. It also looks at how these areas have been treated in a number of forums and settings (including national systems and experiences, and also in trade agreements) and the interface with WIPO discussions. Furthermore, the book analyses the process and the negotiation dynamics since the IGC received a mandate from WIPO members, in 2009, to undertake formal text-based negotiations towards legal instruments for the protection of GR, TK and TCEs. While there has been some progress in these negotiations, important disagreements persist. If these are to be resolved, the adoption of these legal instruments would be a significant development towards resolving key gaps in the modern intellectual property system. In this regard, the book considers the future of the IGC and suggests options which could contribute towards achieving a consensual outcome.

Book Sentence Patterns in English and Hebrew

Download or read book Sentence Patterns in English and Hebrew written by Ron Kuzar and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sentence Patterns in English and Hebrew offers an innovative perspective on sentential syntax, in which sentence patterns are introduced as constructions within the general framework of Construction Grammar. Drawing on naturally occurring data collected from the Internet, the study challenges the prevailing view of predication as the sole mechanism of sentence formation, and introduces the idea of patterning as a complementary, sometimes even alternative mechanism. Major sentence patterns of English and Hebrew are systematically presented, targeting both their form and their function. A contrastive analysis of the sentence patterns in these two languages results in postulating a typological group, in which cognitive motivations are shown to account for both similarities and differences within the typology. Sentence Patterns in English and Hebrew will appeal to scholars of constructional approaches, cognitive linguistics, typology, syntax, as well as anyone interested in English and Hebrew.

Book Notorious C O P

Download or read book Notorious C O P written by Derrick Parker and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Derrick Parker worked on some of the biggest criminal cases in rap history, from the shooting at Club New York, where Derrick personally escorted Jennifer Lopez to police headquarters, to the first shooting of Tupac Shakur. Always straddling the fence between "po-po" and NYPD outsider, Derrick threatened police tradition to try to get the cases solved. He was the first detective to interview an informant offering a detailed account of Biggie Smalls's murder. He protected one of the only surviving eyewitnesses to the Jam Master Jay murder and knows the identity of the killers as well as the motivation behind the shooting. Notorious C.O.P. reveals hip-hop crimes that never made the paper—like the robbing of Foxy Brown and the first Hot 97 shooting—and answers some lingering questions about murders that have remained unsolved. The book that both the NYPD and the hip-hop community don't want you to read, Notorious C.O.P. is the first insider look at the real links between crime and hip-hop and the inefficiencies that have left some of the most widely publicized murders in entertainment history unsolved.

Book Cross Disciplinary Approaches to Characterize Gait and Posture Disturbances in Aging and Related Diseases volume II

Download or read book Cross Disciplinary Approaches to Characterize Gait and Posture Disturbances in Aging and Related Diseases volume II written by Simone Tassani and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging introduces disturbances to the gait and posture of individuals. Such alterations can originate or result from a wide range of causes making it challenging to understand when modifications are related to pathological or physiological causes. Many disciplines come together to perform this kind of analysis (e.g. computational and experimental mechanics, image processing, medicine, biology, physiology, machine learning, and data science). Gait analysis is particularly sensitive to the interactions of different disciplines. This technique allows the study of human movements, but only through a multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to infer relations of causation. Narrow studies focusing on specific techniques are important to develop the fundamental tools required to study movement. In recent years, significant methodological advancements have been independently made in these fields. However, to cross the borders of current science and develop consistent results any new study needs to set interdisciplinary goals. An inclusive approach merging multiple aspects would be key in targeting pharmacological or rehabilitation interventions and improving patient care as a whole.
