Book Grocery Story

Download or read book Grocery Story written by Jon Steinman and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungry for change? Put the power of food co-ops on your plate and grow your local food economy. Food has become ground-zero in our efforts to increase awareness of how our choices impact the world. Yet while we have begun to transform our communities and dinner plates, the most authoritative strand of the food web has received surprisingly little attention: the grocery store—the epicenter of our food-gathering ritual. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring stories and examples of American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements. Author Jon Steinman: Deconstructs the food retail sector and the shadows cast by corporate giants Makes the case for food co-ops as an alternative Shows how co-ops spur the creation of local food-based economies and enhance low-income food access. Grocery Story is for everyone who eats. Whether you strive to eat more local and sustainable food, or are in support of community economic development, Grocery Story will leave you hungry to join the food co-op movement in your own community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food and nutrition security - identified via availability, access, utilization, and stability - and transitions to sustainable food systems are major discourses in the agro-food arena, as many countries today experience different forms of malnutrition simultaneously, such as child undernutrition, anemia among women, and adult obesity. Meanwhile, the triple burden of malnutrition (undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency) is still widespread. Food Security and Nutrition explores integrated, context-specific approaches to food security challenges, emphasizing nutrition security as an integral component and addressing the implications of food content to food and nutrition security policies. Providing insight into these challenges through agricultural, policy, nutritional, geographic and sustainability lenses, Food Security and Nutrition is a valuable reference for food scientists and nutrition researchers working in food supply, food security, and nutrition security, and policy makers, investors, and other decision-makers seeking to address food insecurity around the world. - Addresses nutrition security as part of the overall challenge of food security - Explores contributing factors that impact both food and nutrition security - Presents insights into effective policy development and implementation

Book Working with Families Through Cooperative Extension Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program

Download or read book Working with Families Through Cooperative Extension Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program written by Janet M. Fitchen and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Information is provided to assist the understanding and effectiveness of Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) workers in dealing with nutritional problems in low-income families. In addition to problems directly related to nutrition, low-income families often have para-nutritional problems that make the implementation of nutrition recommendations difficult. Awareness of these problems is essential if nutritional gains are to be made in such families. Para-nutritional problems of low-income homemakers include: finances; self-image; homemaking image; diet rigidity; psychological handicaps; marital conflicts; and insufficient health attention. The guide is intended as a starting point, continuing reference, and a problem-sorting model for EFNEP aides; it is not intended to serve as a how-to manual. While both nutritional and para-nutritional problems of low-income families are discussed, no attempt has been made to treat all possible problems. An annotated bibliography of references suggested in the discussion of nutritional problems, and a compilation of miscellaneous appropriate teaching resources, also are provided. (wz).

Book Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Food Security in South Asia

Download or read book Regional Cooperation for Sustainable Food Security in South Asia written by Nagesh Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-08-02 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume foregrounds the importance of regional cooperation in the context of food security challenges in South Asia. South Asia holds the key to global achievement of SDG targets of ending hunger and malnutrition – it accounts for nearly one-third of food-insecure people on the planet, with every third child suffering from stunting due to malnutrition. Similar food preferences, production systems, and the transboundary nature of agrarian ecosystems call for coordinated action by South Asian countries, complementing national actions dealing with food security challenges. In this volume, leading experts discuss the perspectives of key South Asian countries in leveraging regional cooperation for addressing food security challenges and reflect on the potential of cooperative actions in different areas. The book proposes a ten-point regional policy agenda covering cooperation for combatting climate change, regional trade liberalization, operationalization of regional food reserves, leveraging technology, sharing of good practices, regional institution building, coordinated positions in multilateral trade negotiations, addressing trans-boundary outbreak of livestock diseases, strengthening food safety standards, and the management of shared natural resources. A key volume on accomplishing SDGs in the South Asian context, this book will be of immense interest to policy makers, researchers, and development practitioners. It is also essential reading for scholars and researchers in the areas of development studies, South Asia studies, food security, environment and sustainability.
