Cooperative learning is an efficient and evidence-based teaching method for inclusive classrooms, which puts the emphasizes on learning that is facilitated by students rather than the teacher and thus represents a shift from traditional lecture-style classrooms to more brain-friendly environments. However, although cooperative learning is consistently acknowledged for its efficacy, its implementation remains a challenge. The question whether teachers have the professional competences needed to implement inclusive education is often ignored. The implementation of the convention brings new challenges to the classroom. Inclusive classrooms require inclusive teaching, which means a change of paradigm from a teacher-centred education to a student-centred education has to be enforced. The traditional role distribution between teachers and students does not do justice to an inclusive classroom. The conventional imparting of knowledge and competences should be replaced by a more auto-didactical approach. Consequently, the education requirements for students and teachers change. There is innumerable research on cooperative learning but only limited research sheds light on the new role a teacher has to take on when it comes to implementing cooperative learning in inclusive classrooms. The main questions to be answered are the following: What does a teacher need to consider when they implement cooperative learning in classrooms? Book excerpt: Since the late 1980s, ES/FL teachers interested in Cooperative Learning (Holt, 1993; Kessler, 1992; Lopriore, 1996) have come together to share ideas at the annual convention of the International TESOL organization. The 1997 convention was no exception. The first four authors hosted a Breakfast Seminar at which about 45 other teachers joined us to begin our day with good food, strong coffee (Lucilla suggested Italian coffee, but unfortunately none was to be found), and good discussion about frequently asked questions (FAQs) in using Cooperative Learning (CL) with our second language students. Below is a list of the questions we discussed and the responses we received. Before and after the convention, we showed our list of questions to others and added their responses. The fifth author added her own views as well as helping to compile those of others. We included everyone's responses, even when one response seemed to contradict a previous one. Each teacher must make their own decision based on their own particular teaching situation and their own beliefs about education (Jacobs, Gan, & Ball, 1997). Book excerpt: Dewey's idea of Project-based Learning (PBL) was introduced into the field of second language education nearly two decades ago as a way to reflect the principles of student-centered teaching (Hedge, 1993). Since then, PBL has also become a popular language and literacy activity at various levels and in various contexts (see Beckett, 1999; Fried-Booth, 2002; Levis & Levis, 2003; Kobayashi, 2003; Luongo- Orlando, 2001; Mohan & Beckett, 2003; Weinstein, 2004). For example, it has been applied to teach various ESL and EFL skills around the world (e.g., Fried-Booth, 2002). More recently, PBL has been heralded as the most appropriate approach to teaching content-based second language education (Bunch, et al., 2001; Stoller, 1997), English for specific purposes (Fried-Booth, 2002), community-based language socialization (Weinstien, 2004), and critical and higher order thinking as well as problem-solving skills urged by the National Research Council (1999). Despite this emphasis, there is a severe shortage of empirical research on PBL and research-based frameworks and models based on sound theoretical guidance in general and second and foreign language education in particular (Thomas, 2000). Also missing from the second and foreign language education literature is systematic discussion of PBL work that brings together representative work, identifying obvious gaps, and guiding the field toward future directions. This, first of its kind, volume bridges these obvious gaps through the original work of international scholars from Canada, Israel, Japan, Singapore, and the US.
