Book Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report

Download or read book Cook Islands 2008 Social and Economic Report written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cook Islands has transformed its economy since the public debt crisis of the mid-1990s. The economy is private sector-led, the Government is now on a sound financial footing and well placed to address key development issues, and the economy has proved its resilience in the face of five cyclones in 2005. The tourism sector remains the main driver of growth and visitor arrivals are expected to continue to grow. Infrastructure works are a development priority, both to support economic growth and to address the rising pressures on the all-important natural environment. Improved education services are needed to meet the ever-rising expectations of the population, and the aging population and steady rise in noncommunicable disease are placing new pressures on the health and welfare systems. The gap between living standards on the main centers of Rarotonga and Aiututaki and the outer islands is a further key development issue. Continued improvement in institutional performance lies at the heart of an effective response to these needs. This report discusses options for responding to these needs with a view to helping guide public policy formulation in the Cook Islands.

Book Collective Creativity

Download or read book Collective Creativity written by Katherine Giuffre and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective Creativity offers an analysis of the explosion of artistic creativity currently taking place on the South Pacific island of Rarotonga. By exploring the construction of this art-world through the ways in which creativity and innovation are linked to social structures and social networks, this book investigates the social aspects of making fine art in order to present a ’collective’ theory of creativity. With a close examination of tourism, galleries and, of course, the artists themselves, Katherine Giuffre presents a detailed picture of a complex and multi-faceted community through the words of the art-world participants themselves. Theoretically sophisticated, yet grounded with rich empirical data, this book will appeal not only to anthropologists with an interest in the South Pacific, but also to scholars concerned with questions of ethnicity, creativity, globalization and network analysis.

Book Health Change in the Asia Pacific Region

Download or read book Health Change in the Asia Pacific Region written by Ryutaro Ohtsuka and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-24 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asia-Pacific region has seen great social, environmental and economic change across the past century, leading to dramatic changes in the health profiles of all populations represented in South East and East Asia, Pacific Islands and the islands of Melanesia. This volume considers evidence concerning prehistoric migration, and colonial, regional and global processes in the production of health change in the Asia-Pacific region. Notably, it examines ways in which a health pattern dominated by under-nutrition and infection has been displaced in many ways, and is being displaced elsewhere by over-nutrition and the degenerative diseases associated with it. This book presents a cohesive view of the ways in which exchange relationships, economic modernization, migration and transnational linkages interact with changing rural subsistence ecologies to influence health patterns in this region.

Book Navigating the Global Storm

Download or read book Navigating the Global Storm written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global financial crisis emerged at an alarming rate. A global credit squeeze led to large falls in international stock markets and the world economy is weakening rapidly. The Pacific is largely shielded from the most immediate effects of the crisis, but it is not immune. This Policy Brief provides early advice on what the global financial crisis could mean for the Pacific and what it could do to lessen its adverse impacts. The key response should be to reinvogate structural reform, which is crucial to achieving sustained economic growth.
