Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convivia is a journal that is interested in thinking what architectonics is or could be in the twenty-first century. Pre-specific to architecture, architectonics deals with the real in an abstract, yet edifying manner. Under architectonics, the indeterminacy brought by contemporary science is assumed as a liberation from ontological and epistemological principles, and welcomed as a fortunate occasion to understand and embrace the stating of any principle as an ‘art’ in itself—autonomous, yet not automatic or autarkic. Architectonic deals with the real in terms of a communicational physics, through articulations that are concrete yet reasoned in abstractive and projective manners. The journal aims to set the table for a series of banquets—of convivia—in which courses do not respond to mere needs or inconsequential delights of ‘consumption’. We focus on architectonic alloys of necessities and contingencies: necessities are bounded by contingencies, and contingencies are engendered through ‘figuring out’ what is necessary. Convivia’s interest is to ‘make cases’.

Book Convivial Constellations in Latin America

Download or read book Convivial Constellations in Latin America written by Luciane Scarato and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-30 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on diverse theoretical perspectives on conviviality, this book considers the ways in which Latin America, a continent marked by deep inequalities, has managed to afford, create, sustain, and contest forms of living together with difference across time and space. Interdisciplinary in approach and presenting studies from various nations across the continent – from the medieval period to the present day – it considers the ways in which Latin America might contribute to our understanding of the relationship between inequality, difference, diversity, and sociability. As such, it will appeal to scholars of history, sociology, geography, anthropology, development studies, postcolonial and social theory with interests in Latin American studies, and in the contingencies and contradictions of living together in profoundly unequal societies.

Book excerpt: Christmas crimes hit close to home for Boston’s favorite art sleuths. “Charlotte MacLeod’s mysteries are witty and full of humor” (Maine Crime Writers). The angry old men of the Comrades of the Convivial Codfish club celebrate yuletide doing what they do best: eating, drinking, and greeting the season of giving with a spirited “bah, humbug!” Though well past sixty, Jem Kelling is a relative infant compared to some of the club’s elder statesmen, and he has waited decades to host their annual Christmas scowl. And during his first evening as Exalted Chowderhead, he is thrilled to find the wine abundant, the chowder superb, and the humbugs as lusty as ever. But as the night winds down, Jem is horrified to find that the ceremonial Codfish necklace has vanished—right off of his neck! His nephew-in-law, art investigator Max Bittersohn, is convinced his new uncle was the victim of a practical joke. But when the old man takes a hip-snapping tumble, Max is forced to conclude that one of the scrooges is trying to perpetrate a deadly Christmas jeer.

Download or read book Lowcountry Agricultural and Convivial Societies written by Christopher C. Boyle and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-23 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the Antebellum period, rice had dominated the local economic, political, and social patterns of South Carolina's Lowcountry for nearly two hundred years. This book explores the purpose of the social organizations as well as the moral, economic, cultural, and political challenges of the Georgetown rice planters. Within the protected confines of their organizations, planters felt safe discussing local and national politics, advancements to their educational system, and agricultural and livestock improvements to better compete with the Industrial North. The alliance of "brothers of the soil" helped solidify South Carolina's Lowcountry politically. The agricultural alliances of the region promoted Southern Nationalism and provided one pillar for Southerners to the American Civil War.

Book Boswell s Edinburgh Journals

Download or read book Boswell s Edinburgh Journals written by Hugh Milne and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Boswell's relish for life, unflinching honesty and wide social contacts make him one of the raciest and most entertaining of all diarists. This is a one-volume edition of the journals he kept while making his living as an advocate in eighteenth-century Edinburgh. Hugh Milne's introduction and notes remove the barriers that time has placed between us and Boswell. The result is a book in which an extraordinary personality lives before us upon the page. Boswell embodied in himself all the extremes and contradictions of his time and place. This was the Edinburgh of the Enlightenment, and among his friends he counted thinkers like David Hume and Adam Smith, and entertained eminent visitors like Dr Johnson. Boswell was alive to every new social or political idea and was interested in all the drama of human life, whether high or low. All Boswell's public and private doings, and his inner debates about religion and the meaning of life, go unedited into his journal. His vivid description of a whole gallery of characters and situations makes its pages compulsively readable.

Book Early Christian Families in Context

Download or read book Early Christian Families in Context written by David L. Balch and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typical studies of marriage and family in the early Christian period focus on very limited evidence found in Scripture. This interdisciplinary book offers a broader, richer picture of the first Christian families by drawing together research by experts ranging from archaeologists to ancient historians. By exploring the nature of households in the ancient Greco-Roman world, the contributors assemble a new understanding of ancient Christian families that is both compelling and instructive. Divided into six parts, the book covers key aspects of ancient family life, from meals and child-rearing to women's roles and the lives of slaves. Three concluding chapters explore the implications of all this information for theological education today. Contributors: David L. Balch Suzanne Dixon J. Albert Harrill Ross S. Kraemer Christian Laes Peter Lampe Amy-Jill Levine Margaret Y. MacDonald Dale Martin Eric M. Meyers Margaret M. Mitchell Carolyn Osiek Beryl Rawson Richard Saller Timothy F.
