Book Preaching in Medieval Florence

Download or read book Preaching in Medieval Florence written by Daniel R. Lesnick and published by . This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thirteenth century, expansions in international commerce brought a new class of merchants and bankers to Florence who displaced the old, semifeudal aristocracy from power. Heavy migration from the countryside created a prosperous class of craftsmen, shopkeepers, and professionals who sought to share the power of the new, nonaristocratic elite. In Preaching in Medieval Florence, Daniel Lesnick reveals that the mendicant orders of St. Dominic and St. Francis assumed responsibility for ministering to the new urban laity and did so by embracing ideologies that corresponded to their audiences' secular needs.

Book Medieval Prostitution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Rossiaud
  • Publisher : Wiley-Blackwell
  • Release : 1995-12-11
  • ISBN : 9780631199922
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Medieval Prostitution written by Jacques Rossiaud and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1995-12-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fifteenth-century France, public prostitution was condoned by all sectors of society. Clerics and municipal officials not only tolerated prostitution, but were often its principal beneficiaries, owning and frequenting brothels quite openly. The explanation of this remarkable state of affairs is just one aspect of Jacques Rossiaud's vivid reconstruction of a part of medieval society that has previously received little attention. Drawing upon extensive research in medieval archives, the author shows that most fifteenth-century Frenchwomen could expect a life of constant subjugation to male desire. Rape, for instance, was common and considered only a minor crime. He then considers whether public prostitution might paradoxically have been seen by the secular and religious authorities as a means of social control, and of preserving marital stability: the virtue of wives and daughters was best protected by the existence of public brothels, where sexual urges could be satisfied without adultery or rape. Jacques Rossiaud also describes the social background of the prostitutes, brothel-keepers, pimps, and their clientele, providing a vivid overview of the context in which medieval prostitution existed. Medieval Prostitution will be of interest to medieval historians, as well as to students of the history of the family and sexuality.

Book Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy

Download or read book Revival Preachers and Politics in Thirteenth Century Italy written by Augustine Thompson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of medieval preaching have tended to focus on sermon texts. This is the first scholarly study in English of preaching and its social context in thirteenth-century Italy. Augustine Thompson O.P., both an academic and a preacher, reconstructs the "Great Devotion" of 1233 and analyzes its devotional, social, political, and legal elements. He shows how the preachers of this revival crafted an image of divine authority that supported their intervention in factional disputes and facilitated their arbitration in social and political conflicts. They exploited forms from revived Roman Law and developing city statutes in order to create flexible procedures for mediation, and ultimately were able to revise communal ordinances to enshrine their message of social harmony. This is a work of original scholarship, carefully researched and lucidly written, which is a valuable contribution to our understanding of religion and politics in the middle ages.
