However, the lack of learner engagement and the corresponding high attrition rates in online courses remain a major challenge in the field. Scaffolding-based conversational agents promise to address this problem by interacting with each learner individually, similar to educators' scaffolding behaviour. Conversational agents (CAs) are one of the biggest trends in digital transformation and one of the most common applications of AI. These are computer programs that can interact with humans in natural language. A growing body of evidence suggests that these programs can change a student's commitment to learning. Conversational agents with recent natural language processing (NLP) capabilities can offer dynamic scaffolds to learners helping them to gain new knowledge and being more engaged in the learning process. So far, there have been a few studies that prove CAs have a positive impact on learning success. However, it is hardly clear how much CAs have impacted learner engagement and satisfaction. Some studies have checked engagement with self-reported data, but none has used sensor data. From learner engagement theory, however, it is known that engagement is better measured with sensor data. The aim of this paper is to conduct a laboratory experiment to measure the impact of conversational agents on learner engagement in online learning. In a second step, qualitative data from a survey after the experiment will be used to determine reasons for student satisfaction or dissatisfaction and to find out how students perceived different CAs during online learning. To test the hypothesis, I built a dynamic scaffolding conversational agent named Sara and compared it with a static, one-size-fits-all scaffolding conversational agent. Book excerpt: The traditional process of building interactive machine learning systems can be viewed as a teacher-learner interaction scenario where the machine-learners are trained by one or more human-teachers. In this work, we explore if teachable AI agents can reliably learn from human-teachers through conversational interactions, how this teaching process affects a teacher's performance in the task, and their trust on the agent. We introduce a teachable agent named Kai, that learns to classify news articles while also guiding the teaching process through conversational interventions. In a three-part study, where several crowdworkers individually teach Kai, we investigate whether this Learning by Teaching approach creates reliable machine learners, improves Turkers' performance and leads to trustable AI agents that crowdworkers would use. We present and discuss the results of the underlying classifier built from conversational interactions with other text classification algorithms. We also provide an evaluation of how crowdworkers perform a text classification before and after interacting with a teachable agent. Finally, we investigate the notion of trust that crowdworkers exhibit for their teachable agents in terms of delegating the work involving monetary compensation. Together, our results demonstrate the benefits of Learning by Teaching approach, in terms of the performance of the AI agent, the crowdworkers, and the dynamics of trust built from the teacher-learner interaction.

Dysphagia represents a major problem in rehabilitation of stroke and head injury patients. In current clinical practice videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS) is the gold standard for diagnosis of swallowing disorders. However, VFSS is a ti- consuming procedure performed only in a clinical setting. VFSS also results in some radiation exposure. Therefore, various non-invasive methods are proposed for swallowing assessment based on evaluation of swallowing signals, recorded by microphones and/or accelerometers and analyzed by digital signal processing techniques [2]-[5]. Swallowing sounds are caused by a bolus passing through pharynx. It is possible to use swallowing sounds to determine pharyngeal phase of the swallow and characteristics of the bolus [2].
