Book U S Foreign Policy and Peru

Download or read book U S Foreign Policy and Peru written by Daniel A. Sharp and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first authoritative and comprehensive account of the development of the Peruvian revolution of 1968. The study resulted from a team experiment in applied political science, economics, and sociology that maintained effective communications between Peru and the United States at many levels during the difficult years following the revolution. Each chapter is the result of continuous interaction between a leading authority and the major sectors of both societies. History is here presented in its diplomatic, social, economic, and cultural context. The Peruvian and U.S. governments helped to define the subjects of greatest interest to their respective countries, and a systematic effort was made to find the leading authorities on each issue. Since one purpose of this volume is to affect policy by identifying new alternative policies, the papers included here were prepared specifically to be of value to policy makers. This book was produced by a citizens’ constituency on U.S. foreign policy under the auspices of the Adlai Stevenson Institute of International Affairs, the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, and the Johnson Foundation.

Book excerpt: Artificial Intelligence-Based Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures: Artificial Neural Networks for Engineering Applications is an essential reference resource for readers who want to learn how to perform artificial intelligence-based structural design. The book describes, in detail, the main concepts of ANNs and their application and use in civil and architectural engineering. It shows how neural networks can be established and implemented depending on the nature of a broad range of diverse engineering problems. The design examples include both civil and architectural engineering solutions, for both structural engineering and concrete structures. Those who have not had the opportunity to study or implement neural networks before will find this book very easy to follow. It covers the basic network theory and how to formulate and apply neural networks to real-world problems. Plenty of examples based on real engineering problems and solutions are included to help readers better understand important concepts. Helps civil engineers understand the fundamentals of AI and ANNs and how to apply them in simple reinforced concrete design cases Contains practical case study examples on the application of AI technology in structural engineer Teaches readers how to apply ANNs as solutions for a broad range of engineering problems Includes AI-based software [MATLAB], which will enable readers to verify AI-based examples

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peru's self-proclaimed "revolution"—surprisingly extensive reforms initiated by the military government—has aroused great interest all over Latin America and the Third World. This book is the first systematic and comprehensive attempt to appraise Peru's current experiment in both national and regional perspective. It compares recent innovative approaches to Peru's problems with the methods used by earlier regimes, providing original and stimulating interpretations of contemporary Peru from the viewpoints of political science, sociology, history, economics, and education. Originally published in 1976. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Book Post revolutionary Peru

Download or read book Post revolutionary Peru written by Stephen M. Gorman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the nearly twelve years of military rule in Peru--between October 1968 and July 1980--are labelled a revolution, œso-called revolution, or simply a ‘military dictatorship’, one fact remains inescapable: the reforms and programs of the armed forces during that period profoundly altered Peruvian society. This book examines the social, political, and economic legacies of the military government and identifies major areas of tension that are likely to pose problems for the new civilian government. Following a review of the ideology, socio-economic goals, and political performance of the Institutional Revolution of the Armed Forces, the authors analyze the contemporary political economy of Peru and catalog the political and economic policy alternatives available to the Belaúnde regime in the next few years. They discuss the return to partisan politics in Peru, urban and rural conditions, and the way in which real political power has remained with the military forces, despite their surrender of formal authority. Subsequent chapters outline the IMF-imposed stabilization program, revealing its devastating effects on Lima's urban poor, and summarize recent Peruvian foreign policy. A final chapter draws on the prior discussion to present a critical analysis of the transitionary process from military to civilian rule in Peru.

Book The Politics of Antipolitics

    Book Details:

Download or read book The Politics of Antipolitics written by Thomas Davies and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 1997-10-01 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America is moving toward democracy. The region's countries hold elections, choose leaders, and form new governments. But is the civilian government firmly in power? Or is the military still influencing policy and holding the elected politicians in check under the guise of guarding against corruption, instability, economic uncertainty, and other excesses of democracy? The editors of this work, Brian Loveman and Thomas M. Davies, Jr., argue that with or without direct military rule, antipolitics persists as a foundation of Latin American politics. This study examines the origins of antipolitics, traces its nineteenth- and twentieth-century history, and focuses on the years from 1965 to 1995 to emphasize the somewhat illusory transitions to democracy. This third edition of The Politics of Antipolitics has been revised and updated to focus on the post-Cold War era. With the demise of the Soviet state and international Marxism, the Latin American military has appropriated new threats including narcoterrorism, environmental exploitation, technology transfer, and even AIDS to redefine and relegitimate its role in social, economic, and political policy. The editors also address why and how the military rulers acceded to the return of civilian-elected governments and the military's defense against accusations of human rights abuses.

Book The Politics of Antipolitics

Download or read book The Politics of Antipolitics written by Brian Loveman and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978 and here updated from the 1989 edition to include more information on the origins of antipolitics and its history in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to emphasize the often illusory transitions to democracy from 1965 to 1995, to explore why and how military rulers accede to elected civilian governments, and to document the military's generally successful defense against accusations of human rights abuses. The 28 essays find that the civilian governments blossoming throughout Latin America are dressing authoritarian institutions in the trappings of protected democracy in order to suppress popular movements and to privilege the market.
