Book excerpt: In numerous conversations with our colleagues from India, it was suggested that we help to institute a series of symposia in India similar in nature to those that have been conducted by our Latin American colleagues for more than 10 years. We were fortunate to have with us in Oak Ridge Dr. Niyogi and Dr. Mitra from Indian universities. Their close ties with the Bose Institute in Calcutta and the resultant correspondence with the Institute Director, Dr. S. M. Sircar, provided the stimulus for organization of this first Indian symposium, which was held in Calcutta. Under the direction of Dr. Sircar, Dr. B. B. Biswas did an outstandingjob of organizing this conference. Financial support was arranged through Dr. R. R. Ronkin of the United States National Science Foundation, who smoothed the way for the use of PL 480 funds which were approved by the Indian Government for the organization and running of this most valuable symposium. The many Indian scientists who contributed papers and enthusiastically and vigorously entered into the discussions demonstrated the strength of modern science in India. The topic, Control of Transcription, is a timely one, and considerable activity in this area is going on all over the world. The success of this symposium speaks well for the future of these Indian conferences and workshops being planned for the next few years. Again, the worldwide "community of science" is clearly manifested by the close cooperation we have observed in this fruitful and successful symposium.

Book Biological Regulation and Development

Download or read book Biological Regulation and Development written by Robert Goldberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for us to produce a treatise on regulation was mainly our convic tion that it would be fun, and at the same time productive, to approach the subject in a way that differs from that of other treatises. We had ourselves written reviews for various volumes over the years, most of them bringing together all possible facts relevant to a particular operon, virus, or biosynthetic system. And we were not convinced of the value of such reviews for anyone but the expert in the field reviewed. We thought it might be more interesting and more instructive-for both author and reader-to avoid reviewing topics that anyone scientist might work on, but instead to review the various parts of what many different scientists work on. Cutting across the traditional boundaries that have separated the subjects in past volumes on regulation is not an easy thing to do-not because it is difficult to think of what interesting topics should replace the old ones, but because it is difficult to find authors who possess sufficient breadth of knowledge and who are willing to write about areas outside those pursued in their own laboratories. For example, no one scientist works on suppression per se. He may study the structure of suppressor tRNAs in Escherichia coli, he may study phenotypic suppression of various characters in drosophila, he may study polarity in gene expression, and so on.

Book excerpt: The processes involved in herpesvirus replication, latency, and oncogenic transformation, have, in general, been rather poorly defined. A primary reason for this is the size and complexity of the herpesvirus genome. Undoubtedly, a better understanding of the functions of the viral genome in infected and transformed cells will be achieved through studies with temperature-sensitive (ts) mutants of herpesviruses since, theoretically, any essential gene function can be affected by mutants of this type. A. The Herpesviruses A consideration of the genetic analysis of members of the herpesvirus group necessitates a description, albeit brief, of the properties of the group and, most importantly, of their genetic material. The herpesviruses comprise a group of relatively large (100-150 nm), enveloped viruses. The envelope surrounds an icosahedral capsid enclosing a core which contains doubleƯ stranded DNA (ROIZMAN, 1969). The group is thus defined on the basis of a common virion morphology. In addition to a common structure, members of the group share a number of biological properties such as a similar replicative cycle, the ability to cause latent and chronic infections, and the ability to induce antigenic modifications of infected cell membranes. Several herpesƯ viruses have been associated recently with malignancies in man and animals (KLEIN, 1972). Herpesviruses are ubiquitous and have been described in over 30 different species (HUNT and MELENDEZ, 1969; WILDY, 1971; FARLEY et aI., 1972; KAZAMA and SCHORNSTEIN, 1972; NAHMIAS et aI., 1972; ROlZMAN et aI., 1973). Their widespread occurrence in nature suggests a common ancestor.
