Book Thermoacoustic Instability

Download or read book Thermoacoustic Instability written by R. I. Sujith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book systematically presents the consolidated findings of the phenomenon of self-organization observed during the onset of thermoacoustic instability using approaches from dynamical systems and complex systems theory. Over the last decade, several complex dynamical states beyond limit cycle oscillations such as quasiperiodicity, frequency-locking, period-n, chaos, strange non-chaos, and intermittency have been discovered in thermoacoustic systems operated in laminar and turbulent flow regimes. During the onset of thermoacoustic instability in turbulent systems, an ordered acoustic field and large coherent vortices emerge from the background of turbulent combustion. This emergence of order from disorder in both temporal and spatiotemporal dynamics is explored in the contexts of synchronization, pattern formation, collective interaction, multifractality, and complex networks. For the past six decades, the spontaneous emergence of large amplitude, self-sustained, tonal oscillations in confined combustion systems, characterized as thermoacoustic instability, has remained one of the most challenging areas of research. The presence of such instabilities continues to hinder the development and deployment of high-performance combustion systems used in power generation and propulsion applications. Even with the advent of sophisticated measurement techniques to aid experimental investigations and vast improvements in computational power necessary to capture flow physics in high fidelity simulations, conventional reductionist approaches have not succeeded in explaining the plethora of dynamical behaviors and the associated complexities that arise in practical combustion systems. As a result, models and theories based on such approaches are limited in their application to mitigate or evade thermoacoustic instabilities, which continue to be among the biggest concerns for engine manufacturers today. This book helps to overcome these limitations by providing appropriate methodologies to deal with nonlinear thermoacoustic oscillations, and by developing control strategies that can mitigate and forewarn thermoacoustic instabilities. The book is also beneficial to scientists and engineers studying the occurrence of several other instabilities, such as flow-induced vibrations, compressor surge, aeroacoustics and aeroelastic instabilities in diverse fluid-mechanical environments, to graduate students who intend to apply dynamical systems and complex systems approach to their areas of research, and to physicists who look for experimental applications of their theoretical findings on nonlinear and complex systems.

Book Dynamic Modeling Simulation and Control of Energy Generation

Download or read book Dynamic Modeling Simulation and Control of Energy Generation written by Ranjan Vepa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the core issues involved in the dynamic modeling, simulation and control of a selection of energy systems such as gas turbines, wind turbines, fuel cells and batteries. The principles of modeling and control could be applied to other non-convention methods of energy generation such as solar energy and wave energy. A central feature of Dynamic Modeling, Simulation and Control of Energy Generation is that it brings together diverse topics in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electro-chemistry, electrical networks and electrical machines and focuses on their applications in the field of energy generation, its control and regulation. This book will help the reader understand the methods of modelling energy systems for controller design application as well as gain a basic understanding of the processes involved in the design of control systems and regulators. It will also be a useful guide to simulation of the dynamics of energy systems and for implementing monitoring systems based on the estimation of internal system variables from measurements of observable system variables. Dynamic Modeling, Simulation and Control of Energy Generation will serve as a useful aid to designers of hybrid power generating systems involving advanced technology systems such as floating or offshore wind turbines and fuel cells. The book introduces case studies of the practical control laws for a variety of energy generation systems based on nonlinear dynamic models without relying on linearization. Also the book introduces the reader to the use nonlinear model based estimation techniques and their application to energy systems.

Book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines

Download or read book Combustion Instabilities in Gas Turbine Engines written by Timothy C. Lieuwen and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2005 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers gas turbine users and manufacturers a valuable resource to help them sort through issues associated with combustion instabilities. In the last ten years, substantial efforts have been made in the industrial, governmental, and academic communities to understand the unique issues associated with combustion instabilities in low-emission gas turbines. The objective of this book is to compile these results into a series of chapters that address the various facets of the problem. The Case Studies section speaks to specific manufacturer and user experiences with combustion instabilities in the development stage and in fielded turbine engines. The book then goes on to examine The Fundamental Mechanisms, The Combustor Modeling, and Control Approaches.

Book Analysis and Control of Thermoacoustic Instability a Time Delay Systems Approach

Download or read book Analysis and Control of Thermoacoustic Instability a Time Delay Systems Approach written by Umut Zalluhoglu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermoacoustic instability arises from the interaction between unsteady heat release and pressure perturbations in an acoustic enclosure. The pressure oscillations grow and lead to excessive stress reversals in the structure, raising fatigue concerns and mechanical failures. This common phenomenon in the realistic combustors and rocket engines has been broadly studied over a simplistic laboratory abstraction called the Rijke tube. This simple set-up offers a convenient platform to elucidate the fundamental physics of thermoacoustic instabilities. As evident from the most recent literature, there are numerous aspects of this phenomenon even in the Rijke tube setting that are not fully understood and explored. The current work addresses some of them by forming a bridge between thermoacoustics research and time delay systems stability theory. Under certain conditions, this phenomenon can be modeled as a linear time-invariant dynamics which is affected by multiple time delays. Moreover it falls into the â€neutral†time delay systems sub-class, stability analysis of which is notoriously challenging. In order to assess its stability, a recent mathematical paradigm called the Cluster Treatment of Characteristic Roots (CTCR) is used throughout this work. This combination forms the key contributions of this doctoral study, which are summarized as: (i) Analytical prediction of thermoacoustic instability in Rijke tube in the parametric space of the system. (ii) Introduction of a time-delayed integral controller. This approach leads to novel frontiers for feedback stabilization of thermoacoustic oscillations via a holistic analysis. (iii) Parametric assessment of passive control of thermoacoustic instability using Helmholtz resonator. Specifically geometric characteristics are investigated to stabilize an unstable operation. (iv) Introduction of active-passive stabilization methods, combining a Helmholtz resonator and a feedback loop over a Rijke tube. A new capability is developed to predict control-induced instabilities over this setting. All of these analytically-discovered features are verified with experiments performed in the Advanced Laboratory for Automation, Robotics and Manufacturing. This unique approach is expected to improve the initial design efforts of real-world combustors.
