Book excerpt: This research addresses delay effects in nonlinear systems, which are ubiquitous in various fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, and even in social and economic systems. They may arise as a result of processing times or due to the finite propagation speed of information between the constituents of a complex system. Time delay has two complementary, counterintuitive and almost contradictory facets. On the one hand, delay is able to induce instabilities, bifurcations of periodic and more complicated orbits, multi-stability and chaotic motion. On the other hand, it can suppress instabilities, stabilize unstable stationary or periodic states and may control complex chaotic dynamics. This thesis deals with both aspects, and presents novel fundamental results on the controllability of nonlinear dynamics by time-delayed feedback, as well as applications to lasers, hybrid-mechanical systems, and coupled neural systems.

Book excerpt: Synchronization of chaotic systems, a patently nonlinear phenomenon, has emerged as a highly active interdisciplinary research topic at the interface of physics, biology, applied mathematics and engineering sciences. In this connection, time-delay systems described by delay differential equations have developed as particularly suitable tools for modeling specific dynamical systems. Indeed, time-delay is ubiquitous in many physical systems, for example due to finite switching speeds of amplifiers in electronic circuits, finite lengths of vehicles in traffic flows, finite signal propagation times in biological networks and circuits, and quite generally whenever memory effects are relevant. This monograph presents the basics of chaotic time-delay systems and their synchronization with an emphasis on the effects of time-delay feedback which give rise to new collective dynamics. Special attention is devoted to scalar chaotic/hyperchaotic time-delay systems, and some higher order models, occurring in different branches of science and technology as well as to the synchronization of their coupled versions. Last but not least, the presentation as a whole strives for a balance between the necessary mathematical description of the basics and the detailed presentation of real-world applications.

Delays arise naturally in networks of coupled systems due to finite signal propagation speeds and are thus a key issue in many areas of physics, biology, medicine, and technology. Synchronization phenomena in these networks play an important role, e.g., in the context of learning, cognitive and pathological states in the brain, for secure communication with chaotic lasers or for gene regulation. The thesis includes both novel results on the control of complex dynamics by time-delayed feedback and fundamental new insights into the interplay of delay and synchronization. One of the most interesting results here is a solution to the problem of complete synchronization in general networks with large coupling delay, i.e., large distances between the nodes, by giving a universal classification of networks that has a wide range of interdisciplinary applications.

With increasingly strict requirements for control speed and system performance, the unavoidable time delays in both controllers and actuators have become a serious problem. For instance, all digital controllers, analogue anti aliasing and reconstruction filters exhibit a certain time delay during operation, and the hydraulic actuators and human being interaction usually show even more significant time delays. These time delays, albeit very short in most cases, often deteriorate the control performance or even cause the instability of the system, be cause the actuators may feed energy at the moment when the system does not need it. Thus, the effect of time delays on the system performance has drawn much at tention in the design of robots, active vehicle suspensions, active tendons for tall buildings, as well as the controlled vibro-impact systems. On the other hand, the properly designed delay control may improve the performance of dynamic sys tems. For instance, the delayed state feedback has found its applications to the design of dynamic absorbers, the linearization of nonlinear systems, the control of chaotic oscillators, etc. Most controlled mechanical systems with time delays can be modeled as the dynamic systems described by a set of ordinary differential equations with time delays.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Partial differential equation (PDE)-based control methods are developed for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with bounded external disturbances and known/unknown time-varying input delay. Inspired by predictor-based delay compensators, a linear transformation is used to relate the control input to a spatially and time-varying function. The transformation allows the input to be expressed in a manner that separates the control into a delayed control and non-delayed control and also facilitates the ability to compensate for the time-varying aspect of the delay with less complex gain conditions than previous robust control approaches. Unlike previous predictor-based approaches, which inherently depend on the system dynamics, an auxiliary error function is introduced to facilitate a robust control structure that does not depend on known dynamics. The designed controller features gains to compensate for the delay and delay derivative independently and further robustness is achieved since the controller does not require exact model knowledge. In Chapter 2, a tracking controller is developed for a second order system with a known time-varying input delay. A novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional is used in the Lyapunov based stability analysis to prove uniform ultimate boundedness of the error signals. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 focus on the development of a tracking controller for a generalized uncertain nonlinear systems with bounded external disturbances and unknown time-varying input delay. In Chapter 3, a nonlinear mapping is used to map the non-compact time domain to a compact spatial domain, and then a neural network (NN) is used to estimate the unknown time-varying input delay. In Chapter 4, an accelerated gradient descent (AGD) based optimization method is demonstrated to estimate the unknown time-varying delay magnitude. Application of input time-delay for flexible system is examined in Chapter 5. Specifically, an aircraft wing dynamics is considered. The NN based estimation scheme developed in Chapter 3 is combined with a boundary control method, to mitigate oscillations in the aircraft wing in Chapter 5.
