Book The Tabanidae Diptera of Mali

Download or read book The Tabanidae Diptera of Mali written by James T. Goodwin and published by Entomological Society of America. This book was released on 1982-07-01 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family Tabanidae, often referred to as horse and deer flies, contains approximately 3800 species in 125 genera worldwide. The adults are large of size, strong flyers and often of striking appearance. The females of the majority of species are blood-feeders and are considered to be of considerable economic importance, due to their known and potential role as vectors of disease and to their nuisance value. Because of their importance, the adults are frequently collected and are relatively well known in many parts of the world. Chainey and Oldroyd (1980) recognized 727 species representing 31 genera from the Afrotropical Region. At the time of this publication, the most recent taxonomic treatment of the Afrotropical fauna was the three-volume series by Oldroyd (1952, 1954, 1957). This work serves as the basic reference for the identification of specimens from the region, but it must be supplemented by numerous shorter papers that have appeared in recent years which include descriptions of species not recognized at the time of Oldroyd's work, as well as numerous nomenclatural changes and other information of taxonomic significance

Book The Orientation of Horse Flies and Deer Flies tabanidae diptera Ii the Role of Some Visual Factors in the Attractiveness of Decoy Silhouettes

Download or read book The Orientation of Horse Flies and Deer Flies tabanidae diptera Ii the Role of Some Visual Factors in the Attractiveness of Decoy Silhouettes written by G. K. Bracken and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attractiveness of colored spheres was compared in the field for several tananid species. Black and red spheres were highly attractive to all the species. Tabanus illotus was attracted nearly equally to black, gray, and white silhouettes. The attractiveness of gray and white spheres for the other species decreased rapidly with increasing reflectance. Green and yellow spheres were unattractive for all species. Two-dimensional black silhouettes attracted only a small number of tabanids. Three-dimensional black silhouettes with plane surfaces attracted larger numbers of flies. Glossy black silhouettes with convex curvature in the vertical plane were much more attractive than other silhouettes. Interpretations of these results are presented. (Author).
