This book was released on 1920 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George P. Merrill edited and compiled the list of State entries for natural history surveys and/or geological surveys for the individual States. Geological surveys may include references are non-uniform and sporadic by State. The omission of a State or Territory indicates that no public survey of the locality was undertaken during the period covered by this history. The subject matter is arranged alphabetically by States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A recent national survey of geology students indicated that, In a subject so fundamental and yet so varied, every although they saw the need for a basic training in map geologist will have his own views on geological maps - the work, the three-dimensional aspects involved formed the matters needing emphasis, the best methods of interpreta single most difficult part of an introductory geology tion, good examples of maps, and so on. Instructors may course, and that it was generally taught in a way both ab therefore urge in their taught courses different priorities stract and dull. At the same time, there was no book which from those given here, and, although a wide range of maps puzzled students could turn to for explanations; no book and map exercises is included, will prefer to continue to which told them more about real geological maps. This use their own 'pet' examples. But this is meant primarily to book is an attempt to fill that need. It is based on the view be a book for the student - to turn to for clarification, for that in these days of increasing specialisation the geological further information, and simply to learn a little more about map remains the vital coordinating document, and that the geological maps.

Book excerpt: "The story starts with William Smith's early years, from apprentice to surveyor for hire, and from publication of his groundbreaking 1815 geological strata map to imprisonment for debt. Smith's 1799 geological map of Bath and table of strata, his first strata map of England and Wales, published in 1801, and photographs of some of Smith's collection of 2,000 fossils illustrate the tale. The remainder of the book is organized into four parts, each beginning with four sheets from Smith's hand-colored, 1815 strata map, accompanied by related geological cross sections and county maps (1819-24), and followed by sections of Sowerby's fossil illustrations (1816-19), organized by strata. Interleaved between the sections are essays by scholars that focus on the people and industries that benefited from the knowledge imparted by Smith's work. Concluding the volume are reflections on Smith's later years as an itinerant geologist and surveyor, plagiarism by a rival, receipt of the first Wollaston Medal in recognition of his achievements, and the influence of his geological mapping and biostratigraphical theories on the sciences, which culminated in the establishment of the modern geological timescale"--

Book Subsurface Conditions

Download or read book Subsurface Conditions written by Keith Turner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-26 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterisation of the shallow subsurface has gained in importance as civil and geotechnical engineering and environmental applications have become more dependent on a precise definition of geomechanical and geohydrological properties. A better understanding of the subsurface conditions offers wide-ranging benefits to governments, industry and individual citizens. Subsurface geological modelling became an economic and technologic reality in the late 1980's, when competing 3-D geoscientific information systems were the subject of considerable research and evaluation, especially by the petroleum exploration industry. Investigations in the shallow subsurface impose additional requirements that have only recently become technically and economically achievable. The very shallow urban underground environment, where many infrastructure and utilities elements are located, presents the most difficult characterisation problems. Subsurface modelling techniques have matured, along with modern data base concepts. The evolution of the Internet and Web-browser technologies has expanded information transmission and dissemination capabilities. Subsurface models are being integrated with decision-support systems to provide predictions of technical and economic performance. Yet even the most sophisticated of these models leave some uncertainty in geologic interpretation. A variety of techniques for assessing uncertainty have been developed and are being evaluated.

This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Contribution to the Geologic History of the Floridian Plateau This paper is the outgrowth of my association with two organiza tions, the United States Geological Survey and the Carnegie Institution of Washington. As Geologist in charge of Coastal Plain Investiga tions of the former organization, I have had unusual opportunities to familiarize myself with the geology of Florida, supplementing my previous field work in the State by several additional trips. I super vised and participated in the preparation of a report on the stratigraphic geology and a geologic map of the State, done in cooperation between the United States Geological Survey and the Florida State Survey, by Messrs. George Charlton Matson, Frederick G. Clapp, and Samuel San ford. I have therefore had at my disposal not only the results Of my personal work for the Geological Survey, but also those of Messrs. Matson, Clapp, and Sanford. The information derived from my association with the United States Geological Survey is here utilized with the permission of the Director of that Bureau, and my hearty thanks are extended to him for the privilege. Book Contributions to a History of American State Geological and Natural History Surveys 1920 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions to a History of American State Geological and Natural History Surveys, 1920 The scientific publications of the United States National Museum consist of two series, the Proceedings and the Bulletins. The Proceedings, the first volume of which was issued in 1878, are intended primarily as a medium for the publication of original, and usually brief, papers based on the collections of the National Museum, presenting newly acquired facts in zoology, geology, and anthropology, including descriptions of new forms of animals and revisions of limited groups. One or two volumes are issued annually and distributed to libraries and scientific organizations. A limited number of copies of each paper, in pamphlet form, is distributed to specialists and others interested in the different subjects as soon as printed. The dates of publication are recorded in the tables of contents of the volumes. The Bulletins, the first of which was issued in 1875, consist of a series of separate publications comprising chiefly monographs of large zoological groups and other general systematic treatises (occasionally in several volumes), faunal works, reports of expeditions, and catalogues of type-specimens, special collections, etc. The majority of the volumes are octavos, but a quarto size has been adopted in a few instances in which large plates were regarded as indispensable. Since 1902 a series of octavo volumes containing papers relating to the botanical collections of the Museum, and known as the Contributions from the National Herbarium, has been published as bulletins. The present work forms No. 109 of the Bulletin series. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
