Book excerpt: Born in 1838, Mach was a pioneer in the field of physics, having even made an impression on Einstein in his younger life who credited him with being the "Philosophical forerunner of relativity theory." His name is also associated with the speed of sound (as in traveling at Mach "insert-number-here") as well as the Doppler effect. Throughout his career, he was particularly interested in the biological and sensory relationship to physics and science, and naturally, this interest expanded to that of the world of psychological perception and physiological psychology as well as philosophy. The Analysis of Sensations is about just that, the nature of the relationship of physics and the physical sciences to psychological phenomena of sense and perception. It's a fascinating read for anyone looking to expand their knowledge of how the two sides of the same coin meld harmoniously.

INVESTIGATION OF SPACE-SENSATION CONTINUED.1 i. That space-sensation is connected with motor processes has long since ceased to be disputed. Opinions differ only as to how this connexion is to be represented. 2. If two congruent images of different colors fall in succession on the same parts of the retina, they are at once recognised as identical figures. We may, therefore, regard different space-sensations as connected with different parts of the retina. But that these space-sensations are not unalterably restricted to particular parts of the retina, we perceive on moving lTo my knowledge, the matter treated in the preceding chapter has not yet been discussed, except in three small works of my own. The considerations of the present chapter, moreover, are, for me, founded upon those of the preceding chapter. I indicate here the methods by which I have myself gotten clear regarding the sensation of space, without laying the least claim to that which has been accomplished by others in this direction, particularly by the theory of Hering, The extensive literature of this subject is, moreover, too imperfectly known to me to give exact references on all points. The point of Hering's theory which I regard as the most important I will especially notice. our eyes freely and voluntarily, whereby the objects observed do not change their position or form, although their images are displaced on the retina. If I look straight before me, fixing my eyes upon an object O, an object A, which is reflected on the retina in a, at a certain distance below the point of most distinct vision, appears to me to be situated at a certain height. If I now raise my eyes, fixing them upon B, A retains its former height. It would necessarily appear lower down if the...

The very fact that my investigations have been carried on, not in the way of a profession, but only at odd moments, and frequently only after long interruptions, must de tract considerably from the value of my scattered publications, or perhaps even lay me open to the secret charge of desultoriness So much the more, therefore, am I under especial Obligations to those investigators, such as E. Book Aquinas s Theory of Perception

Download or read book Aquinas s Theory of Perception written by Anthony J. Lisska and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony J. Lisska presents a new analysis of Thomas Aquinas's theory of perception. While much work has been undertaken on Aquinas's texts, little has been devoted principally to his theory of perception and less still on a discussion of inner sense. The thesis of intentionality serves as the philosophical backdrop of this analysis while incorporating insights from Brentano and from recent scholarship. The principal thrust is on the importance of inner sense, a much-overlooked area of Aquinas's philosophy of mind, with special reference to the vis cogitativa. Approaching the texts of Aquinas from contemporary analytic philosophy, Lisska suggests a modest 'innate' or 'structured' interpretation for the role of this inner sense faculty. Dorothea Frede suggests that this faculty is an 'embarrassment' for Aquinas; to the contrary, the analysis offered in this book argues that were it not for the vis cogitativa, Aquinas's philosophy of mind would be an embarrassment. By means of this faculty of inner sense, Aquinas offers an account of a direct awareness of individuals of natural kinds—referred to by Aquinas as incidental objects of sense—which comprise the principal ontological categories in Aquinas's metaphysics. By using this awareness of individuals of a natural kind, Aquinas can make better sense out of the process of abstraction using the active intellect (intellectus agens). Were it not for the vis cogitativa, Aquinas would be unable to account for an awareness of the principal ontological category in his metaphysics.

Book Time Dependent Measures of Perception in Sensory Evaluation

Download or read book Time Dependent Measures of Perception in Sensory Evaluation written by Joanne Hort and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensory evaluation is a scientific discipline used to evoke, measure, analyse and interpret responses to products perceived through the senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and hearing. It is used to reveal insights into the way in which sensory properties drive consumer acceptance and behaviour, and to design products that best deliver what the consumer wants. It is also used at a more fundamental level to provide a wider understanding of the mechanisms involved in sensory perception and consumer behaviour. Sensory perception of products alters considerably during the course of consumption/use. Special techniques are used in product development to measure these changes in order to optimise product delivery to consumers. Time-Dependent Measures of Perception in Sensory Evaluation explores the many facets of time-dependent perception including mastication and food breakdown, sensory-specific satiety and sensory memory. Both traditional and cutting-edge techniques and applications used to measure temporal changes in sensory perception over time are reviewed, and insights into the way in which sensory properties drive consumer acceptance and behaviour are provided. This book will be a valuable resource for sensory professionals working in academia and industry, including sensory scientists, practitioners, trainers and students; and industry-based researchers in QA/QC, R&D and marketing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophy of science as it is known today emerged out of a combination of three traditional concerns: the classification of the sciences, methodology and the philosophy of nature. Included in the series Works in the Philosophy of Science 1830-1914 are all three of these interrelated areas. The titles should be of interest to both the philosopher of science and to the historian of ideas. The former will be able to trace present-day concerns back to their origins; the latter should find it a useful source for the study of Victorian conceptions of science.

Book Ernst Mach Physicist and Philosopher

Download or read book Ernst Mach Physicist and Philosopher written by Robert S. Cohen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-12-31 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C., 27 December 1966, a symposium was held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Ernst Mach, the physicist who was vitally concerned about philosophical foundations. It was arranged by Section B on Physics, and co-sponsored by Section L on the History and Philosophy of Science, as well as by the History of Science Society. Dr. Allen W. Astin, Vice-President of the Association and Director of the National Bureau of Standards, presided. Representing the Austrian ambassador, Dr. Ernst Lemberger, a few opening remarks on his behalf were made by Dr. Walter Hietsch. Also present was Dr. Ernest A. Lederer, a grandson of Ernst Mach. The contributors, to the symposium, mostly physicists, represented different backgrounds and differing points of view; they presented their review of Mach's work primarily in the light of subsequent developments. They all, however, share a common interest in the life and works of Ernst Mach. Two of them, Otto BlUh and Peter G. Bergmann, received their doctoral degrees in theoretical physics from the University of Prague. Karl Menger received his doctoral degree in mathematics from the University of Vienna (he is responsible for the latest edition [1960] of Mach's celebrated The Science of Mechanics: A Critical and Historical Account of its Development, for which he prepared a new Introduction).
