Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This booklet has been written to foster the development of a program of mutual aid among Mennonites. It assumes that the Mennonites in their various groups constitute Christian brotherhoods based upon a personal experience of faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and a loving fellowship in His body, the Church. On this foundation it advocates that the members of the Christian community, locally and as a whole, bear one another's economic burdens and so not only fulfill the law of Christ but strengthen the Brotherhood for its greater tasks of witnessing and building for Christ in the world of today. It is a conscious effort to challenge the secular trend of the times which threatens to denature the Christian community and make its members increasingly dependent upon the state and the commercial world with consequent transfer of loyalty from the church to other agencies.

Book Building Communities of Compassion

Download or read book Building Communities of Compassion written by Willard M. Swartley and published by Herald Press (VA). This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pathbreaking volume edited by Willard M. Swartley and Donald B. Kraybill offers the first sustained and scholarly assessment of the history, theology, and practice of Mennonite mutual aid. Long noted for their peacemaking, Mennonites have been less known for those efforts to care for each other whose 20th-century expressions have roots in the Anabaptism of the 1500s. Here Mennonite scholars from a variety of disciplines highlight this Mennonite distinctive. Carefully and sometimes colorfully, 13 authors tell the intriguing story of the rise and transformation of Mennonite aid.

  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2002-03-14
  • ISBN : 9780198023289

Download or read book Bible Carrying Christians written by David Harrington Watt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-03-14 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, there are hundreds of thousands of Protestant churches whose members habitually carry their Bibles with them. These churches--often referred to as "evangelical" or "fundamentalist"--play a crucial role in shaping American society. In this book, David Watt draws on years of fieldwork to present an elegant reinterpretation of the way that conservative Protestants influence American politics and culture. At the heart of the book is a sympathetic, but far from uncritical, analysis of those forms of social power that are assumed to be natural among Bible-carrying Christians. While outsiders often presuppose that evangelical Christians take for granted the authority of certain institutions (among them the American state, corporations, ministers, men, and heterosexuals), Watt argues that the reality is far more complex. This is a concise and lively book that sheds new light on the way that Bible-carrying Christians influence the way that people in America think--and avoid thinking--about social power.

Book excerpt: The editor provides an important new scholarly tool for locating and understanding the enormous expansion of scholarly research dealing with the sociology of Canadian Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish. Although the book includes research from American scholars, the editor devotes special attention to Canadian works concerning these important and interesting minorities. Using the tripartite division of Mennonites, Hutterites and Amish, the bibliography includes 800 entries each with a concise summary and evaluation. The entries are listed under the subheadings: books, theses, articles and unpublished manuscripts. Preceding the bibliography itself is an essay by the editor originally presented to the Canadian Sociology and Anthropology Association. The essay outlines the differing conceptual assumptions of the researchers included in the book, the major methodologies employed and the main conclusions to be drawn from their work.
