Book Christianity and the Notion of Nothingness

Download or read book Christianity and the Notion of Nothingness written by Kazuo MUTŌ and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication by Muto Kazuo is a significant Christian contribution to the predominantly Buddhist “Kyoto School of Philosophy.” Muto proposes a philosophy of religion in order to overcome the claim for Christian exclusivity, as proposed by Karl Barth and others. On such a foundation, he investigates the possibilities for mutual understanding between Buddhism and Christianity. Thereby he engages in a critical exchange with the Kyoto School philosophers Nishida, Tanabe, and Nishitani. Throughout his discourse, Muto applies their method of logical argument (the “dialectic” of soku) to the dialogue between Christianity and Buddhism. He thus opens up new perceptions of Christian faith in the Asian context and, together with his Buddhist teachers, challenges the modern Western dialectical method of reasoning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In our postmodern, experience-oriented culture, people are longing for greater authenticity, integrity, and depth in their pastors and leaders. Board directors, church members, and staff alike are all eagerly seeking leaders who effectively integrate their spirituality and leadership. Pastors and executives, however, often struggle with knowing how to integrate their spiritual values and practices into their leadership and management roles. Designed for pastors, executives, administrators, managers, coordinators, and all who see themselves as leaders and who want to fulfill their God-given purpose, The Spirit-Led Leader addresses the critical fusion of spiritual life and leadership for those who not only want to see results, but who also desire to care just as deeply about who they are and how they lead as they do about what they produce and accomplish. Geoffrion creates a new vision for spiritual leadership as partly an art, partly a result of careful planning, and always a working of the grace of God

Book Buddhist Christian Dialogue as Theological Exchange

Download or read book Buddhist Christian Dialogue as Theological Exchange written by Ernest M Valea and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to encourage the use of comparative theology in contemporary Buddhist-Christian dialogue as a new approach that would truly respect each religious tradition's uniqueness and make dialogue beneficial for all participants interested in a real theological exchange. As a result of the impasse reached by the current theologies of religions (exclusivism, inclusivism, and pluralism) in formulating a constructive approach in dialogue, this volume assesses the thought of the founding fathers of an academic Buddhist-Christian dialogue in search of clues that would encourage a comparativist approach. These founding fathers are considered to be three important representatives of the Kyoto School - Kitaro Nishida, Keiji Nishitani, and Masao Abe - and John Cobb, an American process theologian. The guiding line for assessing their views of dialogue is the concept of human perfection, as it is expressed by the original traditions in Mahayana Buddhism and Orthodox Christianity. Following Abe's methodology in dialogue, an Orthodox contribution to comparative theology proposes a reciprocal enrichment of traditions, not by syncretistic means, but by providing a better understanding and even correction of one's own tradition when considering it in the light of the other, while using internal resources for making the necessary corrections.

Book Buddhist and Christian

Download or read book Buddhist and Christian written by Rose Drew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last century witnessed a gradual but profound transformation of the West's religious landscape. In today's context of diversity, people are often influenced by, and sometimes even claim to belong to, more than one religious tradition. Buddhism and Christianity is a particularly prevalent and fascinating combination. This book is the first detailed exploration of Buddhist Christian dual belonging, engaging - from both Buddhist and Christian perspectives - the questions that arise, and drawing on extensive interviews with well-known individuals in the vanguard of this important and growing phenomenon. The book looks at whether it is possible to be authentically Buddhist and authentically Christian given the differences in beliefs and practices. It asks whether Buddhist Christians are irrational, religiously schizophrenic or spiritually superficial; or whether the thought and practice of Buddhism and Christianity can be reconciled in a way that makes possible deep commitment to both. Finally, the book considers whether the influence of Buddhist Christians on each of these traditions is something to be regretted or celebrated.

Book Buddhism Christianity and the Question of Creation

Download or read book Buddhism Christianity and the Question of Creation written by Perry Schmidt-Leukel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the world created by a divine creator? Or is it the constant product of karmic forces? The issue of creation was at the heart of the classic controversies between Buddhism and Hindu Theism. In modern times it can be found at the centre of many polemical debates between Buddhism and Christianity. Is this the principal barrier that separates Buddhism from Christianity and other theistic religions? The contributions to Part One explore the various aspects of traditional and contemporary Buddhist objections against the idea of a divine creator as well as Christian possibilities to meet the Buddhist critique. Part Two asks for the potential truth on both sides and suggests a surprising way that the barrier might be overcome. This opens a new round of philosophical and theological dialogue between these two major traditions with challenging insights for both. Contributors: José I. Cabezón, John P. Keenan, Armin Kreiner, Aasulv Lande, John D'Arcy May, Eva K. Neumaier, Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Ernst Steinkellner.

Book Religion in Dialogue with Late Modern Society

Download or read book Religion in Dialogue with Late Modern Society written by Ann Aldén and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a constructive contribution to a Christian spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. Based on a description of contemporary religion, in which the author refers to modern sociologists (some general and some specifically involved with religion), this study outlines certain recent characteristics of our contemporary way of relating to religion, and formulates a spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. It detects such spirituality arising within three dynamic fields: 'continuity and internal diversity', 'formal and informal structures' and 'vita activa and vita contemplativa'. Against this background the author presents and analyses a case study of Aloysius Pieris, a Christian theologian active in 'Buddhist' Sri Lanka, and of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Buddhist monk active in 'Christian' France. Based on identified presuppositions and in dialogue with these two personalities the book proceeds towards a construction which contains some basic indicators of a Christian spirituality for the late modern religiously plural society. The concepts 'community', 'baptism' and 'grace and concern' are central to the construction.

Book Mohammed Buddha and Christ

Download or read book Mohammed Buddha and Christ written by Marcus Dods and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you like firebrand ministers delivering strongly worded sermons, then you'll want to dive in to Mohammed, Buddha, and Christ: Four Lectures on Natural and Revealed Religion by Marcus Dods, a theologian and professor of New College in Edinburgh. This book presents four of his lectures about Mohammed, Buddha and Christ and the religions they founded, but the book is not a comparative study of the respective practices of the three great religions. In keeping with his position in the United Free Church of Scotland, Dods forcefully argues for the moral superiority of Christianity. Dods presents two lectures on Islam. Some religious practices of Islam are discussed and praised, like regularity of prayer, almsgiving, and religious holidays. But most of the two lectures is devoted to things that Dods finds deficient about the religion. Dods is critical of the concept of Paradise and criticizes polygamy and marriage laws. He also condemns Mohammed's treatment of women. The second lecture on Islam begins with a brief historical review of the religions of Arabia. He offers the opinions of philosophers like Voltaire and Carlyle and then vigorously disagrees with them. He writes that there is little to admire about Mohammed, and declares the religion was spread by violence and conquest rather than due to positive virtues. However, Dods does praise Islamic contributions to art and literature. Dods is more circumspect about Buddhism. He describes the religion as one that is not devoted to a supernatural deity, and devotes several pages to relating the compelling story of Buddha's life . He praises Buddhists for their charitable natures, which he feels are similar to the ethics of Christians, however, Dods considers Buddhist philosophies as atheistic and leading to polytheism. The lecture on Christianity is entitled "The Perfect Religion." Dods sets up his argument by discussing what makes a religion real, true and the product of divine revelation. He concludes that Christianity is the one true religion and ends the book by surmising that the Arabs are too barbaric to properly receive Christian missionaries. These lectures contain arguments that will be shocking to some modern readers, while at the same time, some of Dods' arguments are still debated today. Mohammed, Buddha and Christ: Four Lectures on Natural and Revealed Religion is probably most useful to readers as a snapshot of Christian thought about other religions in 19th Century Europe. Book Buddhist Christianity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ross Thompson
  • Publisher : John Hunt Publishing
  • Release : 2010-07-15
  • ISBN : 1846943361
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book Buddhist Christianity written by Ross Thompson and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is possible to be a Christian Buddhist in the context of a universal belief that sits fairly lightly on both traditions. Ross Thompson takes especially seriously the aspects of each faith that seem incompatible with the other, no God and no soul in Buddhism, for example, and the need for grace and the historical atonement on the cross in Christianity. Buddhist Christianity can be no bland blend of the tamer aspects of both faiths, but must result from a wrestling of the seeming incompatibles, allowing each faith to shake the other to its very foundations. The author traces his personal journey through which his need for both faiths became painfully apparent. He explores the Buddha and Jesus through their teachings and the varied communities that flow from them, investigating their different understandings of suffering and wrong, self and liberation, meditation and prayer, cosmology and God or not? He concludes with a bold commitment to both faiths.

Book Religious Feminism and the Future of the Planet

Download or read book Religious Feminism and the Future of the Planet written by Rita M. Gross and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rita Gross and Rosemary Radford Ruether have long been known for their feminist contributions to Buddhism and Christianity, respectively. In this book, they talk candidly about what these traditions mean to them in both their liberating as well as problematic aspects. Throughout the book, their life stories provide the rich soil, perhaps even the rationale, for their theological and spiritual development. Despite the marked differences in their life histories and their respective religious faiths, Gross and Radford Ruether achieve surprising unanimity on the paramount issue: what engaged Buddhism and enlightened Christianity can offer in the struggle to create a new future for the planet.

It has worked, as a recent non-Christian, yet not wholly unsympathetic, critic has said, in a measure. But in what measure? What spheres of human life has it touched? How wide, how pervasive, how powerful has been its influence? Working-, as it necessarily has done, in the midst of, and against, and with, the human imperfections, has it, in spite of all that, made good moderately, or splendidly, or at least hopefully? Can it be said that its actual achievements have given good proof of its divine origin? Or is it to be counted as just one ( the highest, to be sure) among the many faiths In this believing world? Will it go on conquering and to conquer/ 1 or must we expect it to give place to something else, more fitted to advancing humanity, that successor itself not final, but to serve awhile, and then in its tuna to be displaced? These questions can be answered only by the accom plishments of the religion of Jesus in every department of life, what it has done and is doing. The average Christian, especially the younger, is abysmally Ignorant of the rock whence ye were hewn, the hole of the pit whence ye were digged. The on
