Book Contributions From the Physical Laboratory of the University of Michigan Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Contributions From the Physical Laboratory of the University of Michigan Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Michigan University Physical Laboratory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions From the Physical Laboratory of the University of Michigan, Vol. 2 This result can also be explained as follows. The projections of the velocities of P1, P2, P3 along the tangents to the circular sections of the cone at P1, P2, P3 are in the same ratio as the distances of P1, P2, P3 from the vertex of the cone. As the reaction of the cone is not normal to its axis, it follows that the ratios of these distances opi: 0132: 0133 will change. But the projections of the velocities cf pi, P2, P3 along the tangents to the circular sections at the given points cannot change as both the reaction of the cone and the stress in the rod are at right angles to this direction. This is where the difficulty comes; our geometrical conditions require an acceleration at right angles to the direction in which the forces act. Simple illustrations of problems of the same nature as the preceding. In Fig. 2 two particles of mass m and MI are connected by a weightless rod of length a and also constrained to move along the parallel curves 0 and 01 which are at the distance a. The curves are com posed of straight lines with arcs of circles at one extremity. If the curves are smooth, the stress in the rod is immaterial; if no external forces act on the system, the particles may be started at A and A, with any common velocity but when they reach E and E1 a difficulty is encountered, as the moment the particles move along the circular arcs their velocities are no longer equal but must be in the ratio a The reactions of the curves and the stress in the rod are at right angles to the direction of motion and there fore cannot produce the required change in the velocities. We could also start the particles at D and D1 with velocities in the ratio a bzb and when they come to E and E1 there would be the same difficulty. Download or read book Contributions From the Physical Laboratory Vol 2 written by University Of Iowa and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contributions From the Physical Laboratory, Vol. 2: Collected Studies and Reports It is interesting, even at the cost of going over Old ground, to speculate upon what is going on in these crystals under light action. The increase in electric action toward the ultra-violet suggests a photo-electric effect. If that is the case then it becomes difficult to account for the maximum that appears in various places toward the red end of the spectrum. In the broad sense it is Of course a photo-electric effect, only in this case it is not limited to the surface -but takes place throughout the body Of the crystal. And it must be remembered that it takes place through the crystal not only in the path of the light, but the action spreads to a distance, as we have already shown,2 even going from the tip of a spine down into and through the main stem Of a crystal cluster. If we are dealing here with the ordinary photo-electric effect, then we should find, when we proceed into the ultra-violet, no maximum whatever, but rather a steady increase in sensibility. It may be that there is a fundamental curve for the light-electric effect on the basis Of Planck's theory which will Show a steady increase in proceeding from the long to the Shortwave-lengths, and that the various maxima found in between will find their explanation in the common optical properties Of these crystals, such as selective absorption, selective transmission, body color, etc. The fact that these peculiar maxima have thus far made their appearance in the red region of the spectrum, coupled with the fact that the color transmitted through these crystals is reddish in color may be of importance in the final solution. Work along this line is to be prosecuted at once. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: University Physics is a three-volume collection that meets the scope and sequence requirements for two- and three-semester calculus-based physics courses. Volume 1 covers mechanics, sound, oscillations, and waves. Volume 2 covers thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, and Volume 3 covers optics and modern physics. This textbook emphasizes connections between between theory and application, making physics concepts interesting and accessible to students while maintaining the mathematical rigor inherent in the subject. Frequent, strong examples focus on how to approach a problem, how to work with the equations, and how to check and generalize the result. The text and images in this textbook are grayscale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passionate Curiosities explores the collections held in the University of Michigan's Kelsey Museum of Archaeology through the lens of the people whose intellectual interests, financial backing, and social networks brought artifacts to Ann Arbor from the 1880s to the 1990s. Through purchases and expeditions, these individuals shaped the Museum's internationally recognized antiquities from the ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, North Africa, Egypt, and the Near East, extensive photographic documentation of these regions from the early 1900s, and significant assemblages of early Christian and Islamic visual culture. An intriguing array of personalities--from archaeologists, missionaries, and diplomats to industrialists, bankrollers, and inventors--weave through these pages. They include Ernst Herzfeld, the eminent Orientalist who helped forge antiquities legislation in Iran; Luigi Cesnola, the rapacious harvester of Cypriot sites; Esther Van Deman, the pioneering feminist and scholar of Roman construction techniques; and Samuel Goudsmit, the renowned nuclear physicist and avid Egyptologist. World-famous dealers who established standards in antiquities connoisseurship likewise populate these sagas. Readers will encounter Edgar J. Banks, a swashbuckling purveyor of Mesopotamian antiquities and entrepreneur of biblical documentary films; Maurice Nahman, the "lion of Cairo"; and the colorful members of the Tano dealer dynasty in Egypt. This copiously illustrated book will interest general readers as well as scholars curious about the holdings of the Kelsey, early collectors and dealers, and the history of museums.
