Attend ees from close to 20 countries presented over 100 contributions at this meeting in which many aspects of the current activities in turbulence research were covered. Five topics received particular attention at the Symposium: Free Flows Wall Flows Recirculating Flows Developments in Reynolds Stress Closures New Directions in Modeling This is also reflected in the five chapters of this book with contributions from research workers from different countries. Each chapter covers the most valuable contributions of the conference to the particular chapter topic. Of course, there were many additional good con tributions to each subject at the meeting but the limitation imposed on the length of this volume required that a selection be made. In this book, fluid mechanics is addressed from both physical and mathematical perspectives. As a first step, the basic theory of continuum mechanics is detailed, pointing out the different assumptions and approximations that lead to conservation laws. As a second step, scaling studies, dimensional analysis and similitude of the general equations help to introduce the inviscid Euler fluid approximation, the Stokes approximation of viscous flow and Prandtl’s boundary layer approximation. Lastly, the concepts of stability, turbulence and compressible flows are presented. Multiphysics approach of flows will provide readers with deeper insights into basic and applied research on complex processing.

A cet effet, des comparaisons ont été faites entre différentes méthodes de prédétermination de l'évolution d'un tourbillon dans son processus d'éclatement. Ces méthodes sont fondées sur l'hypothèse d'axisymètrie, et sur un traitement statistique classique de la turbulence avec fermeture en un point. Une confrontation du calcul avec l'expérience permet de vérifier le réalisme de la théorie et de valider les modèles de turbulence. D'autre part, une étude expérimentale, en soufflerie, a été réalisée afin de quantifier l'influence de la turbulence sur le développement d'un tourbillon non éclaté, en utilisant un dispositif produisant un tourbillon de bout d'aile. La structure interne du tourbillon présente, au centre, une survitesse qui diminue selon la direction longitudinale. Le champ de vitesse extérieur est bien représenté par un tourbillon potentiel. La présence de mouvements latéraux d'ensemble de l'écoulement induit des fluctuations à basses fréquences, qui se superposent à la turbulence proprement dite
