Book excerpt: De nombreuses études ont été consacrées ces dernières années aux mécanismes de précipitation et aux modes de déformation plastique des alliages durcis par précipitation. L'étude des modes de déformation plastique a été effectuée essentiellement dans le cas des matrices cubiques à faces centrées par suite de l'importance considérable de ce durcissement des alliages à base nickel et à base aluminium. Par contre, relativement peu d'études ont été consacrées au même problème dans le cas de matrices cubiques centrées. On sait seulement que certaines précipitations, et en particulier les précipitations cohérentes, s'accompagnent certes d'une augmentation importante des propriétés élastiques, mais aussi, malheureusement très souvent, d'une grande fragilité. Dans le but d'élucider l'origine de ce phénomène, nous avons entrepris l'étude des mécanismes de précipitation et de durcissement dans deux alliages à matrice cubique centrée, l'un à base de titane, l'autre à base de fer. Cette étude simultannée nous a permis de mettre en évidence les phénomènes qui semblent conditionner les propriétés mécaniques de ces matériaux.

Notre démarche s’appuie sur l’étude de l’interaction élémentaire entre dislocations et solutés pour aboutir à l’étude du durcissement par solution solide des métaux cubiques à faces centrées. Nous identifions les origines physiques de l’intensité et de la portée d’interaction entre une dislocation et un atome de soluté. Nous modélisons le franchissement thermiquement activé d’un atome de soluté par une dislocation. Nous montrons que le durcissement des segments de dislocation coin et vis est analogue. Nous développons un modèle de tension de ligne capable de reproduire quantitativement les calculs atomistiques de la contrainte d’écoulement. Enfin, nous identifions la classe d’universalité à laquelle appartient une dislocation en solution solide lors de la transition de dépiégeage.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.
