Book excerpt: Ce mémoire est consacré à l'étude des liaisons Si-H dans le silicium amorphe hydrogéné et le silicium poreux à l'aide de la spectrométrie de désorption thermique (TDS) et de la spectrométrie d'absorption infrarouge. Le silicium amorphe est préparé par évaporation réactive en présence d'un plasma ECR d'hydrogène. Pour des températures de substrat Ts inferieures à 120°C, les couches amorphes sont poreuses et incorporent une quantité importante d'oxygène. La structure de ces couches devient plus dense à mesure que la température de substrat augmente: pour Ts égal à 360°C, la contamination par l'oxygène est éliminée et l'hydrogène est lié aux atomes de Si dans les seuls groupesSiH. Un phénomène de densification apparaît également dans des couches préparées en présence d'ions deutérium accélérés par une DDP de 235V. Le silicium poreux est préparé par trempage chimique dans une solution de type NaNO2/HF. L'analyse TDS de ce matériau montre que la désorption de SiH3 et SiF3, avant celle de H2, permet d'expliquer pourquoi la photoluminescence se dégrade aux faibles températures de recuit. Une étude du vieillissement à l'air de ces couches montre une augmentation de l'intensité du signal de photoluminescence en raison d'une meilleure passivation des liaisons pendantes en surface par O2 et H2O.

Book excerpt: Ce travail concerne l'étude de couches minces de silicium amorphe hydrogène et d'oxyde de silicium préparées par évaporation sous vide. Ces matériaux sont respectivement élaborés par évaporation de silicium sous un flux d'ions hydrogène et par évaporation de poudre de SiO. La méthode de préparation du silicium amorphe hydrogène permet de contrôler de nombreux paramètres de dépôt. La température du substrat, l'énergie des ions hydrogène et la composition du plasma sont étudiées. La stabilité et la localisation de l'hydrogène sont respectivement étudiées par spectrométrie de désorption thermique et par spectrométrie d'absorption infrarouge. La température du substrat modifie considérablement la nature des liaisons silicium hydrogène et l'énergie des ions est un facteur important permettant de densifier la structure du matériau. Les matériaux obtenus sont photoconducteurs et la photoconductivité sous un éclairement prolongé est très stable dans le cas des matériaux ayant une structure dense dans laquelle l'hydrogène, lié sous forme de mono hydrides, est très stable. Les films d'oxyde de silicium présentent le phénomène de photoluminescence dans le domaine spectral visible. La caractérisation structurale et optique de ces matériaux est effectuée afin d'expliquer l'émission de photons. L’influence de la stœchiométrie et des recuits thermiques est étudiée. La spectrométrie d'absorption infrarouge ainsi que l'effet Raman permettent de mettre en évidence l'existence de grains de silicium dans une matrice d'oxyde de silicium. Les mesures optiques sont interprétées en considérant l'existence de deux phases distinctes. L’énergie des photons émis ainsi que celle du gap optique sont des fonctions décroissantes de la fraction volumique de silicium pur présent dans le matériau. Le modèle du confinement quantique des porteurs dans des grains de silicium amorphe ayant une dimension caractéristique égale à quelques dizaines d'angströms permet d'expliquer les résultats obtenus.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac· tivity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 20 (thesis year 1975) a total of 10,374 theses titles from 28 Canadian and 239 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 20 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.
