Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Image Sequence Processing and Dynamic Scene Analysis" held 21 June - 2 July, 1982 in Hotel Maritim, Braunlage/Harz, Federal Republic of Germany. The organizing eommittee of the institute consists of T.S. Huang (Director), H.G. Musmann (Co Director), H.H. Nagel (Consultant), and C.E. Liedtke and W. Geuen (Local 'arrangement). This Institute was devoted to the rapidly emerging field of image sequence processing and dynamic scene analysis which has man! important applications in cluding target tracking, television bandwidth compression, highway traffic moni toring, and analysis of heart wall motion for medical diagnosis. The lectures and discussions in this Institute fell into three overlapping categories: Motion estimation; pattern recognition and artificial intelligence techniques in dynamic scene analysis; and, applications. 1) Motion estimation - One of the most important problems in image sequence analysis and dynamic scene analysis is displacement and motion estimation. For example, in interframe coding using temporal DPCM, displacement estimation and compensation can improve efficiency significantly. Also, estimated motion parameters can be powerful cues in target segmentation, detection, and classification. In this Institute, a number of recently developed techniques for displacement and motion estimation were discussed.

Book excerpt: L'objectif de cette thèse est de concevoir un système automatique constitué d'une ou plusieurs caméras capables de détecter en trois dimensions un amalgame d'objets stockés dans un conteneur. Pour ceci, il est nécessaire de modéliser, de reconnaître et de localiser des formes dans une image. Dans un premier temps, Nous proposons une solution d'optimisation du calibrage de caméras. C'est une tâche essentielle pour récupérer des informations quantitatives sur les images capturées. Cette méthode nécessite des compétences spécifiques en matière de traitement d'image, ce qui n'est pas toujours le cas dans l'industrie. Nous proposons d'automatiser et d'optimiser le système d'étalonnage en éliminant la sélection des images par l'opérateur. Ensuite, nous proposons d'améliorer les systèmes de détection d'objets fins et sans motif. Enfin, nous proposons d'adapter des algorithmes évolutionnaires dans le but d'optimiser les temps de recherche.

Book excerpt: La reconnaissance de formes s'intéresse à la détection automatique de motifs dans des données d'entrée, afin de pouvoir, par exemple, les classer en catégories. La matière première de ces techniques est bien souvent l'image numérique. Cette dernière, dans sa forme la plus courante, est codée sous la forme d'une matrice de pixels. Néanmoins, la question du développement de représentations plus riches se pose. Ainsi, la structuration de l'information contenue dans l'image devrait permettre la mise en évidence des différents objets représentés, et des liens les unissant. C'est pourquoi nous proposons de modéliser les images numériques sous forme de graphes, pour leur richesse et expressivité d'une part, et pour exploiter les résultats de la théorie des graphes en reconnaissance de formes d'autre part. Nous développons pour cela une méthode d'extraction de graphes plans à partir d'images, basée sur le respect de la sémantique. Nous montrons que nous pouvons, étant donné un graphe, reconstruire avec perte limitée l'image d'origine. Par la suite, nous introduisons les graphes plans à trous, graphes dont les faces peuvent être visibles ou invisibles. Leur justification trouve sa place dans la recherche de motifs notamment, pour laquelle les éléments constituant l'arrière-plan d'une image ne doivent pas être retrouvés. En dirigeant notre attention sur la planarité de ces graphes, nous proposons des algorithmes polynomiaux d'isomorphisme de graphes plans et de motifs ; nous traitons également leur équivalence, qui se trouve être un isomorphisme aux faces invisibles près.
