Book The Contract of Love

Download or read book The Contract of Love written by José Chaves and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up with a Colombian father for whom magical realism was a way of life made ordinary reality feel like an immigrant experience for author Jose Chaves, who was born in the U.S. but, as his father would insist, made in Colombia!" That experience comes alive like a movie on the page in The Contract of Love, a memoir about family that is both hilarious and heartbreaking. Chaves' straightforward style turns the familiar exotic and makes the unfamiliar feel like home as he takes readers on a cultural journey from small-town, muscle-car America to the Chaves family farm in Colombia, where the cow is named Lyndon Johnson, and an emotional journey from his father's volatile world where unrequited love is sung out loud in restaurants, to a fraternity where the most important rule is to never reveal your feelings to another guy in public. With tenderness, humor, and hypnotic clarity, Chaves explores the landscape of love that holds us together, beyond the addictions that bind us-- from the broken faith that sends a boy spiraling down, to the grace that finds the man.

Book Love s Promises

Download or read book Love s Promises written by Martha M. Ertman and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blends memoir and legal cases to show how contracts can create family relationships Most people think of love and contracts as strange bedfellows, or even opposites. In Love’s Promises, however, law professor Martha Ertman shows that far from cold and calculating, contracts shape and sustain families. Blending memoir and law, Ertman delves into the legal cases, anecdotes, and history of family law to show that love comes in different packages, each shaped by different contracts and mini-contracts she calls “deals.” Family law should and often does recognize that variety because legal rules, like relationships, aren’t one size fits all. The most common form of family—which Ertman calls “Plan A”—come into being through different kinds of agreements than the more uncommon families that she dubs “Plan B.” Recognizing the contractual core of all families shows that Plan B is neither unnatural nor unworthy of legal recognition, just different. After telling her own moving and often irreverent story about becoming part of a Plan B family of two moms and a dad raising a child, Ertman shows that all kinds of people—straight and gay, married and single, related by adoption or by genetics—use contracts to shape their relationships. As couples navigate marriage, reproductive technologies, adoption, and cohabitation, they encounter contracts. Sometimes hidden and other times openly acknowledged, these contracts ensure that the people they think of as “family” are legally recognized as family in the eyes of the law. Family exchanges can be substantial, like vows of fidelity, or small, like “I cook and you clean.” But regardless of scope, the agreements shape the emotional, social, and financial terrain of family relationships. Seeing the instrumental role contracts will help readers better understand how contracts and deals work in their own families as well as those around them. Both insightful and paradigm-shifting, Love’s Promises lets readers in on the power of contracts and deals to support love in its many forms and to honor the different ways that our nearest and dearest contribute to our daily lives.

Book Wayward Contracts

Download or read book Wayward Contracts written by Victoria Kahn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the language of contract become the dominant metaphor for the relationship between subject and sovereign in mid-seventeenth-century England? In Wayward Contracts, Victoria Kahn takes issue with the usual explanation for the emergence of contract theory in terms of the origins of liberalism, with its notions of autonomy, liberty, and equality before the law. Drawing on literature as well as political theory, state trials as well as religious debates, Kahn argues that the sudden prominence of contract theory was part of the linguistic turn of early modern culture, when government was imagined in terms of the poetic power to bring new artifacts into existence. But this new power also brought in its wake a tremendous anxiety about the contingency of obligation and the instability of the passions that induce individuals to consent to a sovereign power. In this wide-ranging analysis of the cultural significance of contract theory, the lover and the slave, the tyrant and the regicide, the fool and the liar emerge as some of the central, if wayward, protagonists of the new theory of political obligation. The result is must reading for students and scholars of early modern literature and early modern political theory, as well as historians of political thought and of liberalism.

Connected eBooks provide what you need most to be successful in your law school classes. Learn more about Connected eBooks Cases, Problems, and Materials on Contracts is known for pioneering the problem method of law school teaching. A staple in classrooms for decades, it stands out from other texts in the scope of its coverage and its use of short, carefully-constructed Problems to expose students to new concepts, reinforce what they have just learned, and stimulate thought. The Eighth Edition, the first since the passing of Thomas Crandall and the addition of David Horton as co-author, is more accessible than ever. It introduces complicated issues with a clear narrative summary or explicit statement of black-letter law. The cases have been tightly edited for best effect. The book can also be easily adapted to fit various pedagogical needs. Although it starts with “Agreement” and moves to “Consideration,” it is also designed for teachers who prefer to begin with “Consideration” or “Remedies.” It can be used in courses that both include and exclude sales. Finally, because it is shorter than most other texts in this field, it works in 4-unit, 5-unit, and 6-unit courses. New to the Eighth Edition: Substantial input from a new co-author means that the book contains scores of new cases, Problems, and narrative introductions to issues. Each opinion has been streamlined to enhance readability. Where possible, applicable Restatement of Contracts and Uniform Commercial Code sections have been printed in the text, saving students the cost of buying separate supplements. Professors and students will benefit from: Coverage of the basics of Contracts Law in a format that allows greater exposure to the legal concepts through the many Problems that fill each chapter alongside the most illustrative cases on point Assessment multiple-choice questions at the end of each chapter that are meatier than such questions in most books, focusing not on the “right answer” so much as on what real attorneys must consider when confronted with the issues presented The entire book’s approach not just to teach rules of law but to train students to be lawyers faced with commercial issues. For example, Problems sometimes ask students whether they would be committing malpractice if they took a certain course of conduct, an issue very much on the mind of actual attorneys but seldom mentioned in law school classrooms.

Book excerpt: Have you ever asked yourself why human beings are compelled to agree? Is it in our organic human nature to gather in like-minded groups and segregate ourselves from others with dissimilar opinions? Why do we feel the need to call ourselves good or right, believing only we have a firm grasp of the truth, while we label those not like us as bad or wrong? Is it possible that our compulsion to agree is an elaborate man-made control mechanism, rooted in fear? James Beyor points out in The Abyss, the second book in his Guarded Hearts trilogy, that we live in a dangerous time, where our agreements are causing us great mental and biological harm. Humankind is suffering from a bio-mental decrepitude. We have been duped into living out a symbolic replica of our human life potential. Beyor points to an urgent need we must all address, which, if we do not, will bring about anther period of inquisition far more insane and destructive than has been suffered by men in the past. This inquisition will require secular obedience as defined by a government out of control. He points to many fundamental elements that foreshadow unparalleled atrocities inflicted on the mentally and biologically impaired human species. This is not just another doomsday tale; it is a message of hope that we can, if we act now, reestablish our innate inner directed sense of all knowing built and begin again to live an authentic life. The people of the world watch helplessly as our institutions falter in their insatiable struggle for dominance over the human race. We must reclaim individual clarity and wean ourselves from our dependency on agreements of symbols and words. In the Beyor Journals you will come face to face with yourself and become aware of your own innate clarity; a genesis gift available to all those who have the courage to join then the great awakening; who claim their right to a living truth. You will never again wonder what is behind your successes and failures.
