The report first presents a review of current nondestructive testing techniques used in practice and research, and deficiencies of these methods. Then the novel method developed in this project to identify early delamination in reinforced concrete bridge decks is presented. This method uses a unique sensor setup compared to current ultrasonic testing methods and utilizes the waves leak into the concrete from the rebar that is excited with ultrasonic waves" (page 9).

Now on the verge of maturity for diverse engineering applications, this emerging technique serves as an encouraging candidate for facilitating continuous and automated surveillance of the integrity of engineering structures in a cost-effective manner. In comparison with conventional nondestructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasonic scanning and radiography which have been well developed over half a century, damage identification using Lamb waves is in a stage of burgeoning development, presenting a number of technical challenges in application that need to be addressed and circumvented. It is these two aspects that have encouraged us to write this book, with the intention of consolidating the knowledge and know-how in the field of Lamb-wave-based damage identification, and of promoting widespread attention to mature application of this technique in the practical engineering sphere. This book provides a comprehensive description of key facets of damage identification technique using Lamb waves, based on the authors’ knowledge, comprehension and experience, ranging from fundamental theory through case studies to engineering applications.

With the development of intelligent devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, and more cutting-edge devices such as in-body devices and contactless in-home sensors, we are beginning to see a paradigm shift in health care. The new paradigm can be summarized under the framework of digital health: health care is becoming more embedded in daily life, using more continuously collected data, and making more data-driven decisions. We will discuss three of our research works about digital health in this thesis: the first one details our system for deep in-body communication and localization using a backscatter scheme, which solves the critical challenges of near-zero-power in-body continuous monitoring. The second one describes our work on digital biomarkers that are developed using passive measurement of in-home unscripted daily gait speed data by our contactless in-home sensors, which shows how this new method of daily continuously-collected health data has the potential to transform the way we assess Parkinson's disease severity, motor fluctuation, and progression. The final work discusses the application of a wireless non-contact monitoring system for patients with COVID-19, which can be used to remotely monitor their acute and long-term physiological and behavioral symptoms. These three studies on continuous monitoring suggest innovative new directions for the future of digital health.

One commonly investigated SHM technique uses guided ultrasonic waves, which travel through the structure and interact with damage. Measured signals are then analyzed in software for detection, estimation, and characterization of damage. One common configuration for such a system uses a spatially-distributed array of fixed piezoelectric transducers, which is inexpensive and can cover large areas. Typically, one or more sets of prerecorded baseline signals are measured when the structure is in a known state, with imaging methods operating on differences between follow-up measurements and these baselines. Presented here is a new class of SHM spatially-distributed array algorithms that rely on sparse reconstruction. For this problem, damage over a region of interest (ROI) is considered to be sparse. Two different techniques are demonstrated here. The first, which relies on sparse reconstruction, uses an a priori assumption of scattering behavior to generate a redundant dictionary where each column corresponds to a pixel in the ROI. The second method extends this concept by using multidimensional models for each pixel, with each pixel corresponding to a "block" in the dictionary matrix; this method does not require advance knowledge of scattering behavior. Analysis and experimental results presented demonstrate the validity of the sparsity assumption. Experiments show that images generated with sparse methods are superior to those created with delay-and-sum methods; the techniques here are shown to be tolerant of propagation model mismatch. The block-sparse method described here also allows the extraction of scattering patterns, which can be used for damage characterization.
