Book excerpt: The problem of classifying semigroups of endomorphisms of type [italic]I[subscript]infinity symbol factors to outer conjugacy is reduced to the problem of classifying certain simpler structures associated to them, called product systems. Product systems are intimately connected with continuous tensor products of Hilbert spaces. We develop the general theory of product systems and give a number of applications to semigroups of endomorphisms of von Neumann algebras; in particular, we introduce a numerical invariant for such semigroups which is analogous to the Fredholm index.

Book excerpt: In a series of papers Tsirelson constructed from measure types of random sets or (generalised) random processes a new range of examples for continuous tensor product systems of Hilbert spaces introduced by Arveson for classifying $E_0$-semigroups upto cocycle conjugacy. This paper starts from establishing the converse. So the author connects each continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces with measure types of distributions of random (closed) sets in $[0,1]$ or $\mathbb R_+$. These measure types are stationary and factorise over disjoint intervals. In a special case of this construction, the corresponding measure type is an invariant of the product system. This shows, completing in a more systematic way the Tsirelson examples, that the classification scheme for product systems into types $\mathrm{I}_n$, $\mathrm{II}_n$ and $\mathrm{III}$ is not complete. Moreover, based on a detailed study of this kind of measure types, the author constructs for each stationary factorising measure type a continuous tensor product system of Hilbert spaces such that this measure type arises as the before mentioned invariant.

Book excerpt: Inhomogeneous Random Evolutions and Their Applications explains how to model various dynamical systems in finance and insurance with non-homogeneous in time characteristics. It includes modeling for: financial underlying and derivatives via Levy processes with time-dependent characteristics; limit order books in the algorithmic and HFT with counting price changes processes having time-dependent intensities; risk processes which count number of claims with time-dependent conditional intensities; multi-asset price impact from distressed selling; regime-switching Levy-driven diffusion-based price dynamics. Initial models for those systems are very complicated, which is why the author’s approach helps to simplified their study. The book uses a very general approach for modeling of those systems via abstract inhomogeneous random evolutions in Banach spaces. To simplify their investigation, it applies the first averaging principle (long-run stability property or law of large numbers [LLN]) to get deterministic function on the long run. To eliminate the rate of convergence in the LLN, it uses secondly the functional central limit theorem (FCLT) such that the associated cumulative process, centered around that deterministic function and suitably scaled in time, may be approximated by an orthogonal martingale measure, in general; and by standard Brownian motion, in particular, if the scale parameter increases. Thus, this approach allows the author to easily link, for example, microscopic activities with macroscopic ones in HFT, connecting the parameters driving the HFT with the daily volatilities. This method also helps to easily calculate ruin and ultimate ruin probabilities for the risk process. All results in the book are new and original, and can be easily implemented in practice.

The text, a first version of which appeared in successive volumes of the Seminaire de Probabilite8, has been augmented and carefully rewritten, and translated into international English. Still, it remains true "Lecture Notes" material, and I have resisted suggestions to publish it as a monograph. Being a non-specialist, it is important for me to keep the moderate right to error one has in lectures. The origin of the text also explains the addition "for probabilists" in the title : though much of the material is accessible to the general public, I did not care to redefine Brownian motion or the Ito integral. More precisely than "Quantum Probability" , the main topic is "Quantum Stochastic Calculus" , a field which has recently got official recognition as 81825 in the Math.

The terms “Hardy spaces” and “Bergman spaces” are by now standard and well established. But the term “Fock spaces” is a different story. Numerous excellent books now exist on the subject of Hardy spaces. Several books about Bergman spaces, including some of the author’s, have also appeared in the past few decades. But there has been no book on the market concerning the Fock spaces. The purpose of this book is to fill that void, especially when many results in the subject are complete by now. This book presents important results and techniques summarized in one place, so that new comers, especially graduate students, have a convenient reference to the subject. This book contains proofs that are new and simpler than the existing ones in the literature. In particular, the book avoids the use of the Heisenberg group, the Fourier transform, and the heat equation. This helps to keep the prerequisites to a minimum. A standard graduate course in each of real analysis, complex analysis, and functional analysis should be sufficient preparation for the reader.

Book excerpt: In the last 20 years, the study of operator algebras has developed from a branch of functional analysis to a central field of mathematics with applications and connections with different areas in both pure mathematics (foliations, index theory, K-theory, cyclic homology, affine Kac--Moody algebras, quantum groups, low dimensional topology) and mathematical physics (integrable theories, statistical mechanics, conformal field theories and the string theories of elementary particles). The theory of operator algebras was initiated by von Neumann and Murray as a tool for studying group representations and as a framework for quantum mechanics, and has since kept in touch with its roots in physics as a framework for quantum statistical mechanics and the formalism of algebraic quantum field theory. However, in 1981, the study of operator algebras took a new turn with the introduction by Vaughan Jones of subfactor theory and remarkable connections were found with knot theory, 3-manifolds, quantum groups and integrable systems in statistical mechanics and conformal field theory. The purpose of this book, one of the first in the area, is to look at these combinatorial-algebraic developments from the perspective of operator algebras; to bring the reader to the frontline of research with the minimum of prerequisites from classical theory.

It aims at a microscopic formulation of a mesoscopic model class which covers in principle all stages of the generation and propagation of light within a unified and well-defined conceptual frame.The dynamics of the interacting systems is founded — according to original works of the authors — on convergent perturbation series and describes the developments of the quantized microscopic as well as the classical collective degrees of freedom at the same time. Hilbert spaces of analytic functions form one of the pillars of complex analysis. These spaces have a rich structure and for more than a century have been studied by many prominent mathematicians. They also have several essential applications in other fields of mathematics and engineering, e.g., robust control engineering, signal and image processing, and theory of communication. The most important Hilbert space of analytic functions is the Hardy class H2. However, its close cousins, e.g. the Bergman space A2, the Dirichlet space D, the model subspaces Kt, and the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces H(b), have also been the center of attention in the past two decades. Studying the Hilbert spaces of analytic functions and the operators acting on them, as well as their applications in other parts of mathematics or engineering were the main subjects of this program. During the program, the world leading experts on function spaces gathered and discussed the new achievements and future venues of research on analytic function spaces, their operators, and their applications in other domains. With more than 250 hours of lectures by prominent mathematicians, a wide variety of topics were covered. More explicitly, there were mini-courses and workshops on Hardy Spaces, Dirichlet Spaces, Bergman Spaces, Model Spaces, Interpolation and Sampling, Riesz Bases, Frames and Signal Processing, Bounded Mean Oscillation, de Branges-Rovnyak Spaces, Operators on Function Spaces, Truncated Toeplitz Operators, Blaschke Products and Inner Functions, Discrete and Continuous Semigroups of Composition Operators, The Corona Problem, Non-commutative Function Theory, Drury-Arveson Space, and Convergence of Scattering Data and Non-linear Fourier Transform. At the end of each week, there was a high profile colloquium talk on the current topic. The program also contained two semester-long advanced courses on Schramm Loewner Evolution and Lattice Models and Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space of Analytic Functions. The current volume features a more detailed version of some of the talks presented during the program.

A novel feature is the introduction of heat particles which supply thermal noise and represent the kinetic energy of the molecules. When applied to chemical reactions, the theory leads to the usual nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations as well as modifications of them. These can exhibit oscillations, or can converge to equilibrium.In this second edition, the text is simplified in parts and the bibliography has been expanded. The main difference is the addition of two new chapters; in the first, classical fluid dynamics is introduced. A lattice model is developed, which in the continuum limit gives us the Euler equations. The five Navier-Stokes equations are also presented, modified by a diffusion term in the continuity equation. The second addition is in the last chapter, which now includes estimation theory, both classical and quantum, using information geometry.
