Book The Fable of the Mirrors

Download or read book The Fable of the Mirrors written by Xie Weihe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of network society on self-identity and education and proposes key tasks for transforming education in network society. Using the metaphor of the "mirror", the book describes the environment and changes in network society based on the internet and information technology. As the diversity and complexity of network society increases, people see more and more self-images in the large mirrors, leading to a variety of developmental orientations and self-identities, as well as more opportunities for objectification. However, this often leads to confusion as to which image in the mirror really represents oneself. This social framework, which forms the backdrop of modern education, poses new challenges for self-identity formation and educational development. The author emphasizes the role of education in constructing a new "mirror" that can lead children and young people to a better perception of themselves, and thus to self-identification and self-realization. The title will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of educational theory and sociology of education, as well as general readers interested in topics related to network society, identity, and education.

Book IBM Storage Infrastructure for Business Continuity

Download or read book IBM Storage Infrastructure for Business Continuity written by R. F. Kern and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2010-01-30 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of business continuity and disaster recovery remains at the forefront of thought for many executives and IT technical professionals. This IBM® RedpaperTM describes the lessons learned from recent disasters and how IBM storage technology can help businesses address many of the issues related to protecting their storage infrastructures and business-critical IT applications. Two principal disaster recovery metrics, Recovery Time Objective and Recovery Point Objective, are defined and, along with the associated cost tradeoffs, are discussed from the vantage point of various IBM storage technology solutions. Two IBM Business Continuance/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) automation solutions, known as GDPS/PPRC with HyperSwap® and GDPS/PPRC HyperSwap Manager, are described and shown how they can help an installation move closer to attaining a goal of continuous operationGDPS/PPRC with HyperSwap operates in z/OS® environments. For z/OS installations operating two or more sites, in the event of a storage subsystem, host, network or communications facility failure, a switch to processing at an alternate site can be made in almost real time by using GDPS/PPRC with HyperSwap. Additionally, many Clustered Open Systems that are integrated with IBM Remote Copy technology can be configured to switch to a second site in almost real time. In these situations, when a site switch is executed, applications that have been cloned at both sites can continue running with minimal impact to the user.

Download or read book Mirror Symmetry written by Kentaro Hori and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2003 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thorough and detailed exposition is the result of an intensive month-long course on mirror symmetry sponsored by the Clay Mathematics Institute. It develops mirror symmetry from both mathematical and physical perspectives with the aim of furthering interaction between the two fields. The material will be particularly useful for mathematicians and physicists who wish to advance their understanding across both disciplines. Mirror symmetry is a phenomenon arising in string theory in which two very different manifolds give rise to equivalent physics. Such a correspondence has significant mathematical consequences, the most familiar of which involves the enumeration of holomorphic curves inside complex manifolds by solving differential equations obtained from a ``mirror'' geometry. The inclusion of D-brane states in the equivalence has led to further conjectures involving calibrated submanifolds of the mirror pairs and new (conjectural) invariants of complex manifolds: the Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. This book gives a single, cohesive treatment of mirror symmetry. Parts 1 and 2 develop the necessary mathematical and physical background from ``scratch''. The treatment is focused, developing only the material most necessary for the task. In Parts 3 and 4 the physical and mathematical proofs of mirror symmetry are given. From the physics side, this means demonstrating that two different physical theories give isomorphic physics. Each physical theory can be described geometrically, and thus mirror symmetry gives rise to a ``pairing'' of geometries. The proof involves applying $R\leftrightarrow 1/R$ circle duality to the phases of the fields in the gauged linear sigma model. The mathematics proof develops Gromov-Witten theory in the algebraic setting, beginning with the moduli spaces of curves and maps, and uses localization techniques to show that certain hypergeometric functions encode the Gromov-Witten invariants in genus zero, as is predicted by mirror symmetry. Part 5 is devoted to advanced topi This one-of-a-kind book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in mathematics and mathematical and theoretical physics.

Book The Body in the Mirror

Download or read book The Body in the Mirror written by Angela Dalle Vacche and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This rich, wide-ranging book explores Italy's national film style by relating it closely to politics and to the historicist thought of Croce, Gentile, and Gramsci. Here is a new kind of film history--a nonlinear, intertextual approach that confronts the total story of the growth of a national cinema while challenging the traditional formats of general histories and period studies. Examining Italian silent films of the fascist era through neorealism to modernist filmmaking after May 1968, Angela Dalle Vacche reveals opera and the commedia dell'arte to be the strongest influences. As she presents the whole history of Italian cinema from the standpoint of a dialectic between these two styles, she offers brilliant interpretations of individual films. The "body in the mirror" is the national self-image on the screen, which changes shape in response to historical and political context. To discover how the nation represents, understands, and recognizes this fictional "body," Dalle Vacche discusses changes in the strongest parameters of Italian cinema: allegory, spectacle, body, history, unity, and continuity. In her hands these concepts yield a wealth of insights for film scholars, art historians, political scientists, and those concerned with cultural studies in general, as well as for other educated readers interested in Italian cinema. Book Gy rgy Ligeti s Le Grand Macabre Postmodernism Musico Dramatic Form and the Grotesque

Download or read book Gy rgy Ligeti s Le Grand Macabre Postmodernism Musico Dramatic Form and the Grotesque written by Peter Edwards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre (1974–77, revised 1996) has consolidated its position as one of the major operatic works of the twentieth century. Few operas composed since the 1970s have received such numerous productions, bringing the eclectic score to a global audience. Famously dubbed by Ligeti as an ‘anti-anti-opera’, the piece is a highly ambiguous, apocalyptic fable about the human condition, fear of death and the final judgement. As the first book in English solely dedicated to discussion of this work, György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre: Postmodernism, Musico-Dramatic Form and the Grotesque offers new perspectives on the opera’s musico-dramatic identity in the context of musical postmodernism. Peter Edwards draws on a range of modernist and postmodernist theories to explore the collision of past styles and genre models in the opera, its expressive states and its engagement with the grotesque. This is ably supported by musical analysis and extensive study of Ligeti’s sketch materials held at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel. Edwards’s analyses culminate in a new approach to examining the opera’s rich multiplicities, the composition of the musical material and the nature of Ligeti’s relationship with the musical past. This is a key reference work in the fields of musical modernism and postmodernism, opera studies and the music of Ligeti.
